NH - Djeswende ‘Wendy’, 66, & Stephen Reid, 67, Shot on Hiking Trail, Concord, Apr 2022 *Logan Clegg Arrested*

I still think it may have been a random homeless person who lashed out violently. JMO
I wouldn't be surprised. Looking at news reports, the homeless in Concord are having to relocate due to land being sold for development. Like many cities, housing is not affordable and services for the homeless cannot meet the growing need. MOO

If he was seen, whether by witnesses or on camera footage, would he not have stuck out like a sore thumb carrying a gun? I am assuming it was too large for the “school sized” backpack?? JMO
Maybe not.

Not necessarily. Authorities haven’t given any indication as to what type of firearm was used—it could have been a handgun which would easily fit in a “school sized” backpack.

Homeless individuals are more likely to be the victim of violent crime than the perpetrators of it. That’s not to say it isn’t possible, but unhoused people are not any more likely to commit a violent crime than housed people.

I would agree in general. The homeless are more likely to be crime victims, not perpetrators. Although I believe when you combine mental illness as a complication, the numbers may differ.

To clarify, I think in this particular case it would not be surprising if the perp is a person experiencing homelessness based on location of the crime and community stressors. But I could be completely wrong.

Thank you for helping me clarify my post.

Where was it said the backpack was "school sized", the press conference? The press releases only said it was a black backpack.

I hike a lot on similar semi-urban access trails. Most hikes are a few miles in length and probably fewer than 3-4% of hikers carry backpacks. But it's not so rare to be really conspicuous. I'd probably just figure they were carrying camera equipment, a picnic lunch, or rain gear depending on the weather.

It was stated in the press conference that it was “school sized” (a reporter asked if it was a large, camping-style backpack).

The Reid's went to the trails April 18 & were found April 21.

Tips from the public, authorities said, helped lead to the sketch of the person of interest, described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s, approximately 5’10” tall, medium build, with short brown hair, and clean- shaven. He was seen in the vicinity of the Broken Ground trails on Monday, 18 April, wearing a dark blue jacket (possibly with a hood), khaki-colored pants, and carrying a black backpack.

Djeswende Reid and Stephen Reid were found fatally shot in a wooded area near their home last month; a $33,500 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in their murders.

I had my dates mixed up, oops! It makes total sense to me now, thank you.

Person Of Interest Sought In Concord Retired Couple Killings Case – Patch NH
<snipped & BBM>
The man is described as white, in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with a medium build, short brown hair, and clean-shaven. He was wearing a dark blue jacket, possibly with a hood, and khaki-colored pants. He was also carrying a black backpack.

----

Based on the sketch and the description (he was clean-shaven with short hair), I don't think this man was homeless. Given the fact he is white and relatively young (late 20s or early 30s), he does fit the profile of a violent hate crime offender––according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 24% of offenders in violent hate crimes are between the ages of 18 and 29. IMO I think this was a racially-motivated crime of opportunity rather than a targeted killing or a robbery gone wrong.
After seeing the news story, I came here to post that I had the sickening feeling that this may be another attack related to white supremacy. I see that I was not the only one having that thought.

Assuming the POI is in his late 20s to early 30s as has been reported, he would have graduated from high school between 2006 and 2012. It would be helpful to know if the Broken Ground Trails are mainly used by locals or if they attract visitors as well. Assuming it is primarily frequented by locals who live in Concord and the surrounding area, it is likely that our POI would be in a local yearbook or something along those lines. St. Paul's School in Concord has an abundance of digitized records available on their website, including scans of all their alumni magazines.

I am by no means an expert at profiling, so please take this with a grain of salt, but I have done research on members of hate groups and their sympathizers so I have an understanding of their demographics and backgrounds. If I had to profile this POI (assuming it was a hate crime), I would guess the following:

He has a high school education, but not college (72% of offenders in race-motivated hate crimes have a high school education or below)

- He likely has a previous criminal record (60% of hate crime offenders have a criminal record of some kind)

- He may have a history of violence (race-based hate crime offenders are more likely to have a history of violent criminal offenses)

- He may have a poor work history, or is currently unemployed (40.1% of race-based hate crime offenders have poor work history)

- He is most likely not a member of an organized hate group (only 16% of hate crime offenders are members of organized hate-based criminal gangs or groups), although he may associate with people who are members of such groups

- He probably did not know the Reids personally at the time of their murder, although he may have seen them around in the past (52% of violent hate-crime offenders do not have a pre-existing personal relationship with the victim, although they may be recognized by the victim from seeing them around)

- He likely murdered the Reids for the "thrill" (66% of hate crime offenders do so for the "thrill" compared with 25% for "defensive" and 8% for retaliatory motivations)

MOO.

This will sound odd, but the mention of khaki colored pants rang a bell with me. We saw the white supremicists march in khaki pants and polo shirts ( the dated preppy look) in Charlottesville. His outfit also seems to be out of place attire for a local casual hiking trail ?

Very glad LE seems to making progress. This will generate tips for sure

All IMO
I think that is an excellent observation. It seems that hate groups do have dress codes. I don't know how accurate it is, but here is some guide:
Decoding the Language of Extremist Clothing
The khaki pants are often seen with these hate groups.

Of course, it may be a coincidence that this POI (which may not be the perpetrator)
is wearing khaki pants. I wonder, how common is it for people in this age group wearing such pants?

But I think there is a good possibility that if the POI is the pepetrator, that he identifies with these hate groups, whether being a member or not.

One group that I mentioned before is the National Socialist Club (or NSC-131) that is active in the New England area. Here they are protesting at St. Patrick's Day:
It is happening here: Massachusetts has a growing neo-Nazi movement
Notice the khaki colored pants. Their shirts are green because of St. Patrick's day, of course.

Here they are protesting at Brigham and Women's hospital:
Massachusetts has the fourth highest levels of hate propaganda activity in the nation, report finds
Notice, all of them wearing khaki's and blue/black jackets/hoodies

The leader/founder Chris Hood is here in khaki pants (that seem wet) a blue hoodie or jacket with hood doing the Nazi salute (second large image):
Chris Hood

So it definitely seems that NSC-131 has a dress code consisting of khaki pants and blue/black hoodie.

There are also other hate groups that have similar dress code.

I am starting to believe that this may not have been a random act with all the new information.

I think that the backpack contained the weapon and/or magazines. This was not a person going to park for a stroll and running into people he hates. From the description, the POI does not look like a homeless person or addict.

We don't know if the POI is related a hate group such as NSC-131. But NSC-131 chooses its targets carefully. For example, they protested a the reading of “The Communist Manifesto” at the Red Ink Community Library in the Mount Hope neighborhood of Providence. Who new that the communist manifosto would be read there at that time? So I think it is possible that, although the REids were not very public about their volunteering for immigrants, the POI did know about these activities and targeted the Reids. It also seems that the Reids may have made this hike frequently, so the POI
could have anticipated this or followed them.

There is a description of the perpetrator but not of any suspicious vehicle. Perhaps the pepetrator came on foot. Maybe the bodies were dragged of the path so that he had enough time to get away before the bodies were found. If the killer was on foot, there would not have been a quick escape route.

Great research @black_squirrel !
IMO khaki pants are not often worn by this generation /age group, unless its a graduation or you need to wear a jacket or tie type event. It's all about casual comfort across the board. Most wear jeans, sweat pants, basketball shorts and hoodies with sneakers.
That such decent and humane people would travel the world helping others, only to become victims in Stephen's hometown of Concord is tragic. I am hopeful for a resolution.

Sketch leads to surge in tips regarding shooting deaths of New Hampshire couple – WCVB
<snipped & BBM>
Investigators looking for the gunman who killed a New Hampshire couple are sorting through a surge in new tips received since they publicized a sketch of a person of interest earlier this week.

More than 110 new tips were received since Tuesday, the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office said. That's in addition to approximately 170 tips received earlier in the investigation.

[...]

The attorney general's office said the man in the sketch was seen in the vicinity of the area where the couple was killed. Investigators said the man was wearing a dark blue jacket, possibly with a hood, khaki-colored pants and a backpack.

following this case closely as I grew up near there. very sad.

on the khaki-colored pants I think people are reading too much into it. most hiking pants are khaki-colored and these are very popular in NH both when hiking and just as winter clothes. It looks like it was in the 50s in NH that day so it strikes me as not very informative - I imagine if you went to a grocery store that day about 25% of the men would be wearing khaki-colored pants - even among young men.

I think the theory they were targeted for being interracial is very real. I think the chance the person was wearing khakis because they were part of a group is slim - since if it was targeted to scare people you'd think the person would somehow want to make that known to actually scare people. like the buffalo shooter.

my (mostly baseless) theory is that is was just a person who decided they wanted to kill someone and get away with it. and the selection of the targets was semi-random based on their age, skin color, and maybe emptiness of the trail at the time.

Maybe. But remember they were shot multiple times. Whatever the motivation, this leads me to believe it was a strong one.

And how could anyone committing this kind of crime on these trails know they would not be seen or heard? Especially as this was done during daylight hours presumably. I'm not saying they were targeted but random slaying doesn't seem to fit either.

The bodies were moved, also. I think that is important. What if someone else had come into the area during commission of the crime? Would we have another person dead, too?

I hope the sketch of the suspect generates leads. This is a terrible crime against some very good people dedicated to making others' lives better.
