HAMPSTEAD, N.H. — Hampstead police say there are no new developments as the search continues for a 79-year-old man who disappeared last week.
John Matson was last seen walking inside Emerson Village between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. last Wednesday.
Police said several members of the community conducted their own search efforts Sunday, though officers said they cannot encourage people to search anywhere outside of their properties.
Police added that there are no K-9 teams deployed and said they are not concerned about private citizens interfering with K-9 search efforts.
"If people are going to go out and search we want to remind them to take appropriate precautions. Do not go out alone and let people know where you are going," Deputy Chief Robert Kelley said.
Matson is described as about 6 feet tall and weighing 180 pounds. He has gray hair and a gray beard.
He also suffers from dementia, police said.
Police said Matson is not dangerous and is reported to be very friendly. Anyone who spots him is encouraged to approach him and engage with him.
Hampstead police said over the weekend they have covered around 8,000 acres looking for Matson so far.
Police are asking members of the community to check their properties and businesses for any signs of Matson in case he became paranoid and tried to hide.
The public is also encouraged to review video footage if they have cameras set up.
Anyone who sees Matson is asked to call Hampstead police at 603-329-5700 or New Hampshire Fish and Game.
