David Bird, who owns Custom Cordage LLC in Waldoboro, alleges in a civil lawsuit filed Jan. 8 in Knox County Superior Court that his partner Kevin Race of Woolwich bilked the company of $515,118 from 2002 until the time he disappeared in September 2007.

According to a Sept. 12, 2007, press release from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Race, 46, was reported overdue from a day hike on Mount Washington on Sept. 10. Race's vehicle was found at the Appalachian Mountain Club parking lot in Pinkham Notch, N.H., and a handwritten note that was discovered at his residence indicated that Race was "looking for his final resting place," according to the NHFG press release.
A foot and air search by numerous agencies failed to locate Race. No body has been found.

Race is described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 195 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. When last seen, he had short hair with a mustache extending down the sides of his chin.

Reported missing since Sept. 10, 2007, Kevin Race faces a suit for alleged embezzlement of $515,000 from Custom Cordage in Waldoboro. His business partner has filed suit this month in Knox County Superior Court.

David Bird of Owls Head, claims Race, 46, of Woolwich embezzled the sum, which is more than the original $250,000 alleged in a charge filed in Lincoln County Superior Court last year.

CONCORD, N.H. -- Kevin Race of Woolwich, Maine, age 46, was reported overdue from a day hike on Mount Washington on Monday evening (September 10, 2007), according to Lt. Douglas Gralenski of New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Law Enforcement. The missing man’s vehicle has been located at the Appalachian Mountain Club parking lot in Pinkham Notch, N.H. Subsequent investigation revealed that Race had left a handwritten note at his residence indicating that he was “looking for his final resting place.”

Few clues exist as to Race’s exact location, other than that he was last seen at the Hermit Lake Shelter in the bottom of Tuckerman’s ravine at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon (September 9, 2007). All available information leads investigators to believe he is probably on Mount Washington or surrounding mountains. With little information to give the search effort direction, a broad search is underway, covering the area commonly known as the Cutler River Drainage. This area includes Tuckerman’s Ravine and Huntington Ravine.

Searchers from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Appalachian Mountain Club, Mountain Rescue Service, Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue, New England K-9 Search and Rescue, and the US Forest Service are checking trails and scenic outcroppings in the search area, as well as the forest in the vicinity of the vehicle. In addition, the Army National Guard is assisting with an aerial search using a Blackhawk helicopter.

“Unfortunately, the weather has not been cooperating,” said Lt. Gralenski. “The mountaintops have been shrouded in rain and clouds, making search efforts slow and laborious. We’re doing everything reasonable, but without any new clues, it really is like looking for a needle in a haystack.”

Missing hiker Kevin Race is described as 5 foot, 11 inches tall and about 195 lbs., with brown hair and blue eyes. He has short hair with a mustache extending down the sides of his chin. If anyone has seen Race or has information that may help in the search effort, please call the N.H. Fish and Game Department Dispatch Center at 603-271-3361.

No further information is available at this time.

Missing man faced charges

A 46-year-old man who disappeared under mysterious circumstances had been scheduled to go to court to face charges of embezzling nearly $250,000 from a company he cofounded. Kevin Race was last seen Sept. 9, when he left a note at his home saying he went to New Hampshire "looking for his final resting place." Family members say they believe he committed suicide at Mount Washington. But Race's body hasn't been found, and authorities are wondering if he staged his death to evade criminal charges. (AP)
