Nigeria - Extremists Kidnap New Group of 200+ Girls, 14 Apr 2014

" As American military and intelligence specialists joined the hunt for Nigeria’s missing schoolgirls, U.S. officials expressed frustration Thursday with the country’s inability to act on fresh intelligence about the Boko Haram extremists who took more than 200 teenagers captive and threatened to sell them into slavery.

Imagery from U.S. surveillance drones and satellites over the last week has shown suspected bands of Boko Haram militants setting up temporary camps and moving through isolated villages and along dirt tracks in northeastern Nigeria, U.S. officials say".

The White House spokesman, Jay Carney, said there would be no active deployment of US forces in Nigeria.

The US defence secretary, Chuck Hagel, told CBS News it was an open question whether Nigerian forces were capable of rescuing the girls.

Makes me wonder who is going to rescue the girls. Unless it will be the Canadian special forces soldiers?

“Canadian special forces soldiers are in Nigeria helping the government search for hundreds of schoolgirls kidnapped by Islamic militant group Boko Haram.”

OK. My neice's husband served with Special Ops in Africa years ago, not sure where my nephew is currently serving. I wouldn't be surprised if another neice's husband is serving as an advisor in rescue strategy. I'm glad politicians are now saying Special Ops will be deployed in Nigeria not in combat but offering assistance. (I just hope that they can act on their own initiative in defence of themselves and civilians.)

.
So this is apparently why the US will not be physically assisting the Nigerian military in recovering the girls .. instead they will provide info and help strategically.

"Alice Friend, director for African affairs at the US defence department .....

She also said the US was unable to offer aid to Nigeria's military because of "troubling" atrocities perpetrated by some units during operations against Boko Haram.

"We cannot ignore that Nigeria can be an extremely challenging partner to work with," Ms Friend said."

And while the Govt/military hesitate in dealing with Boko Haram, the people are valiantly trying to do the job themselves.

In the three villages attacked Tuesday, gunmen arrived in dozens of all-terrain vans, armored tanks and motorcycles, but villagers quickly mobilized and engaged the attackers in a prolonged battle.

When news of the attack filtered out, people trooped out from nearby villages carrying arms.

Locals seized an armored tank, three all-terrain vans and 90 motorcycles from the attackers, residents said.

From what I've heard, "challenging" is way understating the situation.

"Contrary to the public rejection of any swap deal by the Nigerian government, there are some on-the-ground talks taking place," the source said. "An agreement was reached about two or three days ago in principle to start releasing some prisoners."

He said that among the prisoners that the group wanted released would be wives and families of Boko Haram fighters, some of whom have been taken into custody by the Nigerian government in order to exert emotional pressure on the fighters themselves.

Details of the offer emerged as officials investigated reports that Boko Haram was responsible for the kidnapping of up to 10 Chinese workers in neighbouring Cameroon, where the group now also has a presence.

Nigeria's military knows where the more than 200 girls abducted by Boko Haram are but has ruled out using force to rescue them, the state news agency quoted chief of defence staff Air Marshal Alex Badeh as saying on Monday.

Since the girls were captured, at least 470 civilians have been killed by Boko Haram, which says it is fighting to establish an Islamic state in religiously mixed Nigeria, in various locations, according to a Reuters count.

Britain's BBC reported on Monday that a deal was close to being agreed to rescue the girls in exchange for Boko Haram prisoners – a demand the group had made public – but that it was called off at the last minute.

This must be an incredibly tense, but hopeful time for all the families of the kidnapped girls.
Very delicate procedure, wishing everyone a steady hand, sharp mind and lots of luck! imo.

If the army tries to go in and take the girls, the girls will probably be shot before it happens.

"Mon May 26 - Nigeria accepted help from the United States, Britain, France and China last week and around 80 U.S. troops have started arriving in neighboring Chad to start a mission to try to free the girls."

"26 MAY 2014 - Cameroon and Chad have sent a thousand troops to their borders with Nigeria to fight the Islamist group Boko Haram. The troops were deployed shortly after leaders from the two countries met in Yaounde and declared war against the violent group."

"The report says the militants split the girls into groups and have held them at camps near Lake Chad — well north of the sprawling Sambisa Forest where many believed the girls are. The strategic location provides the extremist sect with multiple escape routes through Nigeria’s porous borders, which Boko Haram has historically exploited to dip in and out of neighbouring countries."

I'm going to be somewhat blunt here and say the Nigerian Army maybe reluctant to fight these terrorist but the terrorist are not reluctant to murder the Nigerians and are killing them daily. They must be confronted and neutralized.

There's really no choice and the Nigerians must step up military action, the time for talking is over.

I'm also a bit dismayed (but not surprised) that other Islamic countries are not making demands of the kidnappers to release the girls, the silence is deafening. Other Islamic countries could be sending troops to combat this type of violence but none, nada. IMO

Ps - I did hear one reference to the Saudi government denouncing the taking of the girls.
