*ETA: “[Superior Court Judge George H.] Gangloff plans to hear the release motion Sept. 12, stating that he needs to consider the issue before the date when Griner would legally have to be freed. He indicated she could be released later in September, based on the current calculation of her time in jail not attributable to delays in the trial caused by the defense.

The judge also set Griner’s trial date for Sept. 12, drawing concern from [Assistant Prosecutor Elizabeth] Parvin.

‘So it’s the court’s intention to start the 12th regardless of my status as being in another trial?’ she asked.

It’s my intention to start the trial on the 12th,’ Gangloff answered. ‘As to who proceeds on the state’s behalf, I don’t know what your office’s intention is on that.

However, the judge said the trial date may not be set in stone
. Parvin noted that she has worked on the Griner case from the beginning.” (BBM)

“A judge has denied a motion for pre-trial release of a Cumberland County woman jailed for 3½ years while she awaits trial on charges that she killed her child.

Nakira M. Griner, 28, of Bridgeton, is accused of killing, burning and dismembering her 23-month-old son Daniel Griner Jr. in 2019. She then claimed he had been abducted, authorities said.

Griner was arrested in February 2019 and has remained jailed ever since.

[SBM]

Based on her count, [Griner’s attorney, Jill] Cohen argued in her motion that Griner should have been released in April of this year, though Superior Court Judge George H. Gangloff Jr. stated in a hearing last month that the release date was actually late September.

With that in mind, Gangloff had set a trial start date of Monday for the case.

[SBM]

… and [Assistant Prosecutor Elizabeth] Parvin asked Gangloff in August and again on Monday to schedule the start of the Griner trial for Oct. 17 so that she could complete the other case, which also involves the killing of a Bridgeton child.

While Gangloff said he understood the prosecution’s predicament, he cited the need to keep the case moving forward and set jury selection to begin Oct. 6. He agreed to conduct jury selection on days when Parvin’s other trial isn’t in session.

When Harold Shapiro, first assistant prosecutor with the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office who is assisting Parvin on this case, raised the issue again during the Monday hearing, Gangloff said he was open to reconsidering that start date when the parties return to court at the end of this month for pre-trial motion hearings.

Cohen stated that she did not object to the Oct. 17 start.

‘I understand the argument that you are making and why you are making it,’ Gangloff told the prosecutors. ‘I respect the issue that you’re mentioning. There are time constraints here … I’m trying to accommodate everybody’s interests, including the courts, in trying to make sure this matter moves forward in a timely way without any additional complications.’

Oh - @inmyhumbleopinion - the article states pretrial motions hearing at the end of the month - any word on exact dates?

TIA! :)
Great question, and no, I don’t know exactly when the hearings are going to be. I am hoping that Matt will cover them, but if I don’t see anything by the first week of October, I will reach out to him to see if there has been a change to the trial date. Does that sound OK?

Sure! But maybe you can get a hold of him before the end of September when they mention the hearings will be - say like Monday the 26th? :)

Looks like no trial - yet, but did get the late Sept. hearing date! Finally got an alert for this case.

BRIDGETON — A judge denied a pretrial release motion for a 28-year-old city woman accused of murdering her toddler and hiding his dismembered body in 2019.

Nakira M. Griner has been incarcerated for over three years for allegedly killing her 23-month-old son, Daniel Griner Jr. She is charged with murder, evidence-tampering, child endangerment, disturbing human remains and false public alarm.

Griner’s attorney, Jill Cohen, said her client should be released because she is over the incarceration limit for individuals awaiting trial. Criminal trials were suspended temporarily during the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2021, Griner declined a plea agreement in which prosecutors would recommend a 30-year prison term in exchange for her confession.

Pretrial motions are set to begin Sept. 28 before Cumberland County Superior Court Judge George Gangloff, court official Rosemarie Gallagher said Thursday.

9/12/22 Update: Superior Court Judge George H. Gangloff Jr. has denied a motion for pre-trial release of Griner jailed for 3½ years while she awaits trial on charges that she killed her child. Her attorney, Jill Cohen, argued in an August motion that her client should be released pre-trial since she had been detained beyond the two-year limit set for defendants awaiting trial under state criminal justice reform measures enacted in 2017. Exceptions are factored in to account for delays attributed to the defense or unusual events, such as the coronavirus pandemic, which caused the state to suspend criminal jury trials from March 2020 through June of last year. Based on her count, Cohen argued in her motion that Griner should have been released in April of this year, though Superior Court Judge George H. Gangloff Jr. stated in a hearing last month that the release date was actually late September. With that in mind, Judge Gangloff had set a trial start date of Monday, 9/19/22 for the case. Based on his review of those days, Judge Gangloff granted some of what the prosecution sought during a hearing on Monday & reset her release eligibility date to Oct. 27, 2022. Under the prosecution’s motion, the release date would have been reset to Feb. 27, 2023. Prosecutor Elizabeth Parvin asked Judge Gangloff in August & again on Monday to schedule the start of the Griner trial for 10/17/22 so that she could complete the other case, which also involves the killing of a Bridgeton child. Judge Gangloff said he understood the prosecution’s predicament & cited the need to keep the case moving forward & set jury selection to begin 10/6/22. He agreed to conduct jury selection on days when Parvin’s other trial isn’t in session. Judge Gangloff said he was open to reconsidering that start date when the parties return to court at the end of this month for pretrial motion hearings. Pretrial motions hearing on 9/28/22.

@inmyhumbleopinion - any word from your friend Matt on yesterday's hearing? Trial still a go for 10/6/22 for jury selection? Trial beginning on 10/17/22?

TIA!
Finally!!

“BRIDGETON — The trial for a city woman charged with murdering her toddler son is set to begin Oct. 17 before Superior Court Judge George H. Gangloff Jr.

[SBM]

A hearing for pretrial motions was held Wednesday, in which the defense unsuccessfully requested that the medical examiner’s testimony be precluded from being heard by a jury, court spokesperson Rosemarie Gallagher said.

The denial is the second for Griner in recent weeks.” (BBM)

So the trial is set to begin on Oct. 17.

As for jury selection, this article does not mention it, but one of Matt’s previous articles mentioned starting it on Oct. 6 in order to start the trial on Oct. 17, so I would say it’s still a go.

Let us HOPE this is finally starting...

I haven’t been able to find anything, either. I also looked at NJ courts’ websites and didn’t see anything indicating that they would be closed tomorrow.

Let me reach out to Matt first thing tomorrow morning and get back to ya :).
