why would he risk this when he was so close to release? I mean, I think he never should've had a release date for a murder charge anyway

and how is this happening again? hope they catch this one faster than 2 weeks

I am local and just received this Nixle alert. According to the alert -
"Mr. Berbon has been working in Mount Laurel as part of NJDOC’s Residential Community Release Program (RCRP) since March 2023. On or about Saturday, September 23, 2023, Mr. Berbon failed to return to a halfway house where he lives in a residential setting. The halfway house is in Camden County, New Jersey. By failing to return to the halfway house after work, Mr. Berbon is now considered an escapee."

This article has a little more information about his previous arrest(s).

"In 2005, Berbon was sentenced to up to 22 years in prison for an attempted murder from the year prior, according to state records. He was scheduled for release on Feb. 12.
He's been in state custody for the conviction since Sept. 14, 2004. He was also incarcerated from May 2002 to April 2004 for a robbery.
Both offenses occurred in Mercer County, according to state records."

OMG, the victims were his parents. :(

I think I see a pattern. Gets out of jail, attacks parents, sent back to jail. Getting close to release, walks away, knowing he will be returned to prison and more time added. JMHO

Exactly what I said. What a dummy! 5ish months left. I don’t live in Mt Laurel but happened to be there yesterday. I took a good look around at the Wawa before getting out of the car.

Investigators say 54-year-old Edward Berbon's last known location was at his work release job in Mount Laurel.

Police told Action News they have no reason to believe Berbon is a danger to the public and they don't think he's in Mount Laurel anymore.

Edward Berbon, 54, has been missing from Volunteers of America Delaware Valley’s Hope Hall in Camden since Saturday, according to the state Department of Corrections.

The work release program is designed to provide prisoners nearing the end of their sentences with support as they transition back into the community, state officials said. Berbon was scheduled to be released in February 2024.

“Mr. Berbon was working in Mount Laurel on Saturday, September 23, and failed to report back to the community release program in Camden that night,” a DOC spokeswoman said Thursday.

WOW! It never ceases to amaze me the brutality one can inflict on another whom they are supposed to love.

This seems to be the laziest manhunt. I really don’t want to denigrate the PD but besides the couple stories above, I haven’t heard much at all about this. From the articles, it doesn’t even seem like they know what happened, only that at one point he was at his job and didn’t report back to the halfway house. I’m not in Mt Laurel but not very far from it. I found out today that he went missing on Saturday but they didn’t announce it until Tues. I guess I’ll just hope that there is more they aren’t telling. I have so many questions. We just had that guy escape from the Philly area jail and you could not get away from that story for 2 weeks! It was Calvacante 24/7.

Whew...they got him!
