Daughter charged with murder in Surf City NJ stabbing

"SURF CITY - A Pennsylvania woman has been charged with murder and accused of fatally stabbing her father and his girlfriend to death at a Long Beach Island home, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said.

Sherry Lee Heffernan, 55, of Landenberg, Pennsylvania, was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with two counts of murder as well as possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon, the Prosecutor’s Office said.

Police were conducting a welfare check at the North Seventh Street house Sunday afternoon when they discovered the bodies of John Enders, 87, and Francoise Pitoy, 75, officials said.

Both had multiple stab wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said."

“On Oct. 4, police went to Heffernan’s home in Chester County, Pennsylvania, outside Wilmington, Delaware and arrested her that evening on an unrelated warrant for her arrest. A Winnebago was at the house.
Detectives interviewed a family member from the home who said Heffernan left the house to visit her father on Long Beach Island the previous week, on Tuesday or Wednesday, a trip the person described as a “midnight dash,” the affidavit says.
“I can’t believe she did this,” the person told police, and said Heffernan was the only one who drove the RV in the last two weeks. The person further said they and Heffernan blame Pitoy for Enders wanting to sell the home, and they believe she was after his money, Rice wrote.”

My jaw dropped reading the passage above; that this “family member” who spoke to LE would attempt to smear the reputation of the poor woman who was brutally murdered by her boyfriend’s scheming, entitled, adult daughter by describing her like she was some kind of “gold digger” is just beyond comprehension. I imagine these comments might make Ms. Pinoy’s family feel quite angry and upset—and understandably so, since their loved one was just murdered and yet is effectively being blamed for it by the perpetrator’s family! IMO, the family member quoted above should be ashamed of herself.

Chester County woman accused of Surf City murders claims she was set up

Surf City police contend that Heffernan, a real estate agent, killed the two victims after her father refused to let her be the broker for the sale of his shore property. An affidavit says the bay front residence is listed for $1.9 million, and a friend of Enders' allegedly told police he had cut his two daughters, including Heffernan, out of his living will within the last month.

Surveillance footage showed 28-foot Winnebago that allegedly belongs to Heffernan entering Long Beach Island before dawn on Sept. 29, police said. A doorbell camera and other surveillance footage in the vicinity of Enders' home later picked up the RV and a suspicious figure hopping a nearby fence. The person later left in the vehicle with the headlights off, according to police.

The RV was again spotted at an entrance to the Garden State Parkway on Route 72, where a license plate reader picked up the vehicle and police found it was registered to Heffernan, the affidavit said.

A search warrant executed on Heffernan's vehicle by Pennsylvania State Police found red stains on the carpet "appearing to be consistent with dried blood," authorities said.

I’m curious to see the details as to her claim of being framed. It does seem odd that she would use such a distinctive vehicle. Anyone who travels from PA into NJ and to shore areas has to be aware of all the cameras/toll plazas. As a broker, she’d likely be aware of doorbell/surveillance cameras. Of course, this could have been a totally unplanned or a poorly planned attack as well. JMO.

There is no toll on the GSP to enter or exit at route 72, so I wonder what license plate reader picked up the plate.

Most Pennsylvanians from Chester County travel over one of the Philly bridges into NJ, then take Route 70 to 72 into LBI.

I don’t even think there at plate readers crossing the Ben Franklin bridge into NJ but there are readers and a pay station on the NJ to PA side.

Billhimer announced that on March 1, 2024, Sherry Lee Heffernan, 57, of Landenberg, Pennsylvania, was found guilty of two counts of Murder in connection with the deaths of John Enders and Francoise Pitoy, following a nearly four week-long jury trial before the Honorable Kimarie Rahill, J.S.C. The murders occurred in Surf City on or about September 29, 2021. In rendering its verdict, the jury concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that Heffernan purposely or knowingly caused the deaths of Mr. Enders and Ms. Pitoy. The jury also found Heffernan guilty of Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose – specifically, a handgun, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (handgun), Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose – specifically, a knife, and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (knife). The jury determined beyond a reasonable doubt that Heffernan was guilty of utilizing a handgun and a knife in the commission of the murders of Mr. Enders and Ms. Pitoy. Heffernan is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Rahill on May 10, 2024, at which time she faces life in prison.

The Asbury Park Press reported that 57-year-old Sherry Lee Heffernan of Landenberg showed no emotion when the jury foreperson in Ocean County announced Friday that she had been found guilty of the murders of her father, John Enders, 87, and Francoise Pitoy, 75, Enders' longtime live-in girlfriend. She faces life in prison when she is sentenced May 10.

One of Pitoy's daughters, Valerie Lewis Evans, put her head down and clasped her husband's hand, then turned and smiled at Enders' grandson, Andrew Vero, the Asbury Park Press reported.
