In April 2015, a retired detective found part of a human skull in the sand, about three-to-four inches in size. Police turned the skull fragment over to the New Jersey State Police forensics lab in Hamilton to be analyzed, which confirmed the object was the upper portion of a human skull. A DNA profile was obtained from it, but that DNA profile did not match that of any known missing persons from the area.

The DEP sent the portion of skull to The Missing Persons Lab at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth who routinely upload information into the Combined DNA Index System, commonly referred to as CODIS, which is a federal DNA database used to try to solve missing person cases and identify remains.

The New Jersey DEP said it was determined that the skull fragment had been in the ocean for some time.
