Paula Chin's body was found at a home on Bailey Hollow Road, the sources said. Investigators believe Chin may have been stabbed to death in her Vestry Street apartment in lower Manhattan in a fight over money, with her body later being driven across the river by her alleged killer.

Her son Jared Eng, 22, of the Vestry Street building, his girlfriend Caitlyn O’Rourke, 21, of Patterson, New York, and a third woman, Jennifer Lopez, 18, of Manhattan, have been charged with concealing a body, law enforcement officials said.

Authorities say additional charges are possible in the death of 65-year-old Paula Chin, as investigators work to establish a timeline of events leading up to the discovery of her body.

Cops suspect Tribeca man of slashing his mother's throat, dumping her body in New Jersey after money fight

FEB 06, 2019

"A 22-year-old man slashed his mother’s throat inside their Tribeca apartment, then toted her body to a suburban New Jersey home where she was found stuffed inside a garbage bag, police sources said Wednesday.

Investigators believe Jared Eng dumped the lifeless remains of mom Paula Chin at the family’s second residence in ritzy Morristown, N.J., located on a wooded lot off a two-lane road after the Jan. 31 slaying....

At his arraignment early Thursday in Manhattan Criminal Court, prosecutors charged Eng was angry at his mother because she was going to throw him out of the house....

Eng was arrested along with his girlfriend, 21-year-old college student Caitlyn O’Rourke, and 18-year-old Jennifer Lopez.

All three were charged with tampering with evidence and concealing a human corpse. Eng was remanded without bail, while O’Rourke’s was held on $50,000 bail and Lopez’s bail was set at $100,000....

The New York City medical examiner will perform an autopsy on Chin because Manhattan prosecutors “have strong evidence she was murdered there,” said Aja Worthy-Davis, spokeswoman for the ME’s office.

The Morris County (N.J.) medical examiner will transport the victim’s body to Manhattan, reversing the 35-mile path that police believe the killer took after slicing open Paula Chin’s throat...."

Missing TriBeCa Mother Found Dead in Garbage Bag, and Her Son Is Charged

The motive for the killing appeared to be financial, a New York City police spokesman said.

It was a shocking turn of events for a Manhattan family that had seemed prosperous and stable. Mr. Eng attended the selective Brooklyn Technical High School and went on to study at SUNY New Paltz, according to his Facebook page.

Ms. Chin’s Facebook profile shows her smiling at a TriBeCa charity gala, and on a family trip with her two sons, Jared and Brandon, 25, at Zion National Park in 2018. The boys’ father, Philip Eng, died 10 years ago, public records showed.

At the arraignment Thursday morning in Manhattan Criminal Court, three people were charged with tampering with evidence and concealment of a corpse: Jared Eng of Manhattan; Caitlyn O’Rourke, 21, of Patterson, N.Y., who was romantically involved with Mr. Eng; and Jennifer Lopez, 18, of Manhattan

Mr. Eng was ordered held without bail. Ms. O’Rourke was held on $50,000 bail, and Ms. Lopez’s bail was set at $100,000. Like Mr. Eng, Ms. O’Rourke was a student at SUNY New Paltz, according to her Facebook page.

The criminal complaint described in grisly detail how Mr. Eng and Ms. Lopez allegedly transported Ms. Chin’s remains to New Jersey on Jan. 31 in Ms. Chin’s own car, a 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser.

The complaint said that security camera videos reviewed by the police showed a woman, presumed to be Ms. Lopez, backing up the car in front of Ms. Chin’s apartment building early on Jan. 31. Someone resembling Mr. Eng put a large duffle bag in the trunk at 2:31 a.m.

On Instagram, Mr. Eng describes himself as a “creative consultant, media enthusiast, gamer” and “cat dad.” In May, he posted a picture with his mother at the Frying Pan restaurant on the Hudson River.

Two’s company – and three’s a crime.

The young Tribeca man suspected of slashing his mother’s throat and tossing her corpse in the trash enlisted his two girlfriends to dispose of the body in a menage-a-macabre, according to two college friends of Caitlyn O’Rourke.

The 21-year-old O’Rourke met Jared Eng about 18 months ago when both were students at SUNY-New Paltz, and the couple welcomed Jennifer Lopez, 18, into their relationship early last fall, the friends told the Daily News.

In jailhouse interview, son asserts he did not slay his mother in their Tribeca apartment

FEB 08, 2019

"A jailed college student insisted Friday that he did not murder his mom.

On second thought, perhaps he did.

Rikers Island inmate Jared Eng was of two minds regarding the grisly killing of 65-year-old Paula Chin inside their Tribeca apartment — first declaring his innocence, then confessing his arrest triggered thoughts of guilt in her death.

“I was feeling suicidal,” the diminutive Eng told the Daily News of his three days behind bars. “I was hearing these thoughts: ‘What if I did do it?’ Maybe I did do it. Then I don’t deserve to live.”

Yet Eng, during a rambling, weepy and sometimes contradictory interview, swore he had nothing to do with the death of a mother who was kind, loving and generous with her large bank account.

“I didn’t kill her,” he declared. “ … I want to clear my name.”

Eng spoke shortly before the city medical examiner ruled that Chin’s Jan. 31 death was a homicide, putting him in line to face possible murder charges, according to police sources. She was stabbed in the neck and cracked multiple times on the head.

The suspect is currently accused only of transporting his mother’s body from Lower Manhattan to Morristown, N.J., inside the dead woman’s car, and then tossing Chin’s body in the trash with the help of his two girlfriends. He faces charges of concealing a corpse and tampering with physical evidence.

According to Eng, his mom had $11 million in the bank and collected $12,000 a month in rent from the two other apartments in their Tribeca building...."

‘Maybe I Did Do It’: Son Jailed After Mom’s Body Was Found in Garbage Bag Speaks Out

February 11, 2019

"A New York City man charged in connection with his mother’s death denied killing her in a jailhouse interview during which he said he was suicidal and described his erratic thoughts.

Jared Eng, 22, his girlfriend Caitlyn O’Rourke, 21, and friend Jennifer Lopez, 18, have been charged with concealment of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence in the death of Eng’s mother, 65-year-old Paula Chin.

In his interview with the New York Daily News, Eng — who has not been charged with murder — said that while he didn’t kill Chin, he has had conflicting thoughts and pangs of guilt....

Eng’s attorney, Joel Cohen, could not be reached for comment Friday. In a statement to the New York Times, he said, “The case is in its early stages and will ultimately be resolved in the courtroom, not in the media.”"
