Suspect dead, 20 other people injured in shooting at New Jersey arts festival
    June 17, 2018 10:05AM EDT

TRENTON, N.J. -- Shooting broke out at an all-night art festival in Trenton, New Jersey, early Sunday, sending people stampeding from the scene and leaving one suspect dead and 20 people injured, a local prosecutor said.

Sixteen the 20 injured were treated for gunshot wounds, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri said Sunday morning. Four of those, including a 13-year-old boy, were in critical condition.

He said that two suspects opened fire around 2:45 a.m. during the Art All Night festival that showcases local art, music, food and films. One of the suspects, a 33-year-old man, was killed. Another suspect is in custody.

Authorities say that about 1,000 people were in the area when the shooting started.

20 injured and one dead at 'massive crime scene' at New Jersey arts festival
“It’s a massive crime scene,” he added. Angelo Nicolo told ABC News that he and his brother were at the event when they heard popping sounds. He said people started running down the street.

“I saw two police officers escort a guy that got shot in the leg. They bandaged him up and whisked him away,” he said.

Local television stations showed numerous police vehicles at the scene. The Trentonian newspaper said that the venue for the festival was strewn with broken glass and other debris. The event began Saturday afternoon and was scheduled to conclude Sunday afternoon. "

It was an all night art festival, which should have been a lot of good and inspiring fun, cannot imagine what kind of person would attend such an event with multiple weapons! imo, speculation.

I've been to this arts festival. It's a 24 hour arts, music, and food festival held annually in June at the Roebling Center (formerly NYC bridge building factory) in Trenton NJ, a town nearby to me.

    Counting friends tonight...

I was just reading more details this morning. This art festival, in its twelfth year draws in about 10,000 over a 24 hour period. And the Roebling building is so cool.

Trenton is so frought with gangs... For those who don't know, Trenton was a thriving city, is the capital of NJ that never recovered from the 1968 riots. Businesses fled, the whole well established Italian section eventually left, along with their fabulous restaurants, and that left Trenton a ghosttown at night. All the government offices and surrounding businesses bustle during the day and then everything closes down at night. This unchanged dynamic created the perfect storm that it is today.

There is an arts center, and a youthful group of investors, architects, builders, homeowners, club owners, TV station, one of the most beautiful theaters I've ever seen (mostly unbooked), NJ state museum, a baseball stadium (Yankees training team), etc., so much potential... but to live there is not for the faint of heart. In fact, mostly terrifying.

It's so sad as this art event draws a wonderful community together from all over... A struggling community of artists. It's actually a miracle that more weren't injured or killed... There were around a thousand peeps there.

ETA: this event wasn't a specific target either, but they were caught in the crossfire of a gang war. What a bad situation. No one feels safe anymore...

A gang war at 2:45 AM, I asked a colleague of mine today who happens to be from New Jersey and he said Trenton is a problem city, not one to go to unless you really have to. I believe him.

The Trenton, New Jersey, mass shooting isn’t getting much national attention. It should.
"The Trenton, New Jersey, mass shooting isn’t getting much national attention. It should."
"There were multiple physical altercations at and around the fair prior to the shooting, leading police to try to disperse the area. But some people remained until late in the night.

Under some definitions of a mass shooting, this incident actually wouldn’t count as one. In some cases, analysts, like Mother Jones, exclude gang-related events from their counts of mass shootings because they’re trying to capture what Americans traditionally think of as a mass shooting. Other definitions do count gang-related events but still wouldn’t include the Trenton shooting because not enough people were killed to meet the definition.

Under the definition Vox uses (also used by the Gun Violence Archive), the event would qualify as a mass shooting — since four or more people were shot, even if they weren’t killed.

Regardless of how one defines it, this kind of shooting deserves public attention. While the Trenton shooting was particularly bad, it’s representative of the kind of everyday gun violence that occurs in the US — and helps make America far and away the developed world’s leader in gun deaths. That’s perhaps why the Trenton shooting hasn’t gotten as much attention or media coverage as other mass shootings; it seems too typical in some ways. But it’s also exactly why Trenton should get more attention."

This shooting is getting quite a bit of coverage on the northeast, NYC, Philly, and NJ, news.

I think we are all so numb to violence, so dismayed at what's happening, so not surprised that no group or event is left untouched by gratuitous, senseless violence.

Trenton is well known as a problem city. But it is also home to many wonderful people of all age groups.

It is also home to some stunning urban renewal projects, like the Roebling Center.

The NJ gov, and mayor on Trenton have both vowed that art all night event will go on. It's always had such a good vibe. They'll rethink security, maybe certain aspects of the event, but that is good news for a community.
