Norway police probe disappearance of WikiLeaks associate

WikiLeaks tweeted on Saturday about Kamphuis's "strange disappearance", saying he had been missing since August 20 when he left his hotel in the northern Norwegian town of Bodo.

It added that Kamphuis had a ticket for a flight departing on August 22 from Trondheim, a city located more than 700 kilometres (435 miles) south of Bodo.

"The train between the two takes (approximately) 10 hours," suggesting he disappeared either in Bodo, Trondheim or on the train, WikiLeaks said, triggering numerous conspiracy theories on Twitter.

Norwegian police on Sunday said they were investigating the disappearance of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's associate Arjen Kamphuis, a cyber security expert, who was last seen in northern Norway.

A website set up to gather information on the missing person says: "He is 47 years old, 1.78 meters tall and has a normal posture. He was usually dressed in black and carrying his black backpack. He is an avid hiker."

There have reportedly been two unconfirmed possible sightings, one in Alesund, Norway and the other in Ribe, Denmark.

Politiet trapper ned etterforskningen av savnede Arjen Kamphuis

The police de-escalate the investigation of missing Arjen Kamphuis. The police in Nordland still do not know what has happened to the missing WikiLeaks relation Arjen Kamphuis. Now the investigation is stepping down somewhat. Nordland police district continues the investigation and conducts a continuous assessment of the resources set for the case, writes Avisa Nordland.

Kamphuis (46) was last seen on August 20th. Then he left the hotel Scandic in Bodø, and the police believe he took a local train to Rognan.

The police have investigated from three main theories; namely that Kamphuis has been exposed to an accident or a criminal offense or that he himself has chosen to stay hidden.
"However, the police have not been able to rule out any of these,"
according to police inspector Bjarte Walla of the Northland police district. A central part of the investigation is also linked to Kamphuis's telephone that connected to a base station in Vikeså, Rogaland ten days later, 30 August.

Belongings of missing #WikiLeaks associate found by fisherman in #Norway – BREAKING NEWS
Sept 12 2018

"Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell believes that Kamphuis’ disappearance is certainly a “cause for concern,”because his research has been been “a matter of some considerable anxiety to government security agencies.”

“Quite clearly there are people in governments and security services around the world who would very much like to get the solution to that encryption and those cyber security measures that he’s enabled journalists to use when those journalists are investigating, exposing bad things being done by governments,” Tatchell told RT.

Kamphuis has been training journalists, human rights workers and whistleblowers to defend their data from government intrusions or manipulation since 2009.

In the handbook, which he co-authored, Kamphuis advises investigative journalists and media professionals how to avoid being snooped on by the state. “Think of ‘protecting your system’ as building a house of cards – for it to work, you must build your security from the bottom up,” the handbook states.

In 2017 the security expert was interviewed by RT about the WannaCry ransomware attack. Back then he suggested that Microsoft could have left the vulnerability open on purpose at the request of the US intelligence agencies. “It could be that this particular tool for that type of crime is just slightly more effective than many of the other ones… It is using some of the vulnerabilities that were purposely built into Windows systems at the instructions of the NSA,” Kamphuis told RT."

In the last media posts about police will use less investigation Vikeså is mentioned as central, but accept for his phone signal, and the change of sim cards, there are no information from the area. Missing Dutch man's phone turned on days after disappearance
Sept 7 2018 rbbm.
"On August 30th, his phone was turned on in the vicinity of Vikeså, around 50 kilometers south of Stavanger. The phone was turned on for 20 minutes. After that, the SIM card was removed and a German SIM card was put into the phone. The Norwegian police is currently trying to track the history of that SIM card.

On Monday a witness reported seeing Kamphuis in Denmark, according to the police. A search for him was therefore also launched there."

So the cams were checked in that area, and police investigation came up with nothing, according to what we know…
At least he would (imo) have one dark bag (luggage) with him..since his kajak, paddle was found abandoned and damaged.

But what about August 20??
His phone connected somewhere in/around Skjerstad fjord,on that day!

We know that police searched the area with dogs, where his belongings were found, but did they also search where his phone pinged, made a connection with a the telephone poles,on august 20?

(This event remains unexposed on this forum and by the media)

So my question is... (to anyone who can answer this) Where are the telephone poles in/around Skjerstad fjord and how far is the reach of it??

Hi Zazara, I had found this item too, but the strange thing is that when it is Google translated it says: ,,,the police have been able to rule out some of these, "said police inspector Bjarte Walla in the Northland police district.

===>> Can someone here on WS who can read/speak Norwegian please check the translation of: Fortsatt har politiet kunne utelukke noen av disse, opplyser politiinspektør Bjarte Walla i Nordland politidistrikt. ?
TIA

@Chiatos: The translation by ZaZara is right - seems they forgotten "not" in the article...

The latest article in the local newspaper was yesterday https://www.an.no/bodo/rognan/saltdal/politiet-han-var-pa-rognan/s/5-4-898375 Police seems pretty sure he was at Rognan, based on witnesses and that they found the kayak and the other things. They have lately concentrated to find out the reason to that the phone pinged in Vikeså.

@Chiatos and @Lorrie you are both right. The not is not in the original text. If it was true that LE had indeed been able to exclude one or more options, that would be a huge breakthrough. And no other source mentioned this breakthrough. Plus Aftenposten referred to Avisa Nordland as the source, so I decided that Aftenposten made a mistake.

Also, noen can mean both some and any. Any often refers to a negative.

That ping was around 10PM (I looked it up)
Things seems to start to happen then

Here is the telephone phone:

LEADER Telenor is implementing a comprehensive development and updating of the 4G mobile network in Norway, and aims to have a population coverage of 98 percent by the end of 2018.

In September, the mobile stations in Storgata in Bodø and Tuva in Fauske were opened with 4G

"The rapid development of today poses increased mobile phone requirements, and with 4G we take an important step towards increased capacity and higher speeds," says Bjørn Amundsen, Deputy Director of Telenor Norway in a press release.

800 Frequency

With enhanced 4G coverage, the base station can now provide coverage across larger areas, thus providing mobile coverage to more. With better coverage, at the same time, there will be much better indoor conditions for private households and workplaces, according to the company.

Powerful underwater quake off Norwegian Arctic island
November 9, 2018
COPENHAGEN -- A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 struck in the Arctic Ocean Friday, northwest of a largely uninhabited and remote Norwegian island, officials said. No injuries or damage were immediately reported.

The Norwegian earthquake centre NORSAR says the quake was recorded at 2:49 a.m. in the sea between the volcanic island of Jan Mayen and Greenland, a Danish territory. The tremor was centred some 120 kilometres (74 miles) off Jan Mayen at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), NORSAR said.

IMHO it is not likely that they did.

When Arjen was first reported missing, it was thought that he had gone missing during a hike in the area. The news about the foldable kayak that he bought before his holidays came later (September 5th). (The question after that was: did he take it with him? This matter was resolved when the kayak washed ashore and was found.)

The question about the CCTV images of Amsterdam Airport have been asked on this thread too (or the previous one). I know that, because I did. Friends and family of Arjen had a meeting with the police on October 9 and this question would have been on their list.

If the question was asked on October 9, the CCTV of the airport would have been deleted already, unless the police had made an earlier request to preserve the data. In the case of Arjen, there was no specific reason to make that request because there is no specific suspicion of a crime.

The good news is that the official CCTV is not the only source of images. The public takes endless selfies, pictures, videos.

The same may have happened in Norway. Perhaps on a lesser scale, but there may exist images with Arjen Kamphuis (plus or minus the kayak) in them.

Thank you :)

That case is in the news now and then and I truely hope that some truth will come up coming week.

Perhaps the police is just being cautious by saying that about the signi dogs? Those dogs have done great work in the past and have proven to be of great help to the police. For instance in the case of a 26 year old disappearance that lead to the waters of the Waal, the signi dogs located the car-wreck:

The quote was completely taken out of context. You have to know the background of the case of the disappearance of Willeke Dost. There is a conflict of sorts between the local police and the family and friends of missing Willeke. Signi is searching on behalf of the family, and the local police don't like that. A policeman happens to make a nasty remark about Signi. Family tells this to a blog. That is all there is to it. Nothing official, no general opinion of the entire Dutch police force about Signi.

Hope this helps.

I think it has more to do with the legal field and its implementation of which Signi Search dogs/trainers are less bound than police/ (dogs).
Also, there is no police present, when the search is done by request of the family, with SSD.So maybe that is an obstacle and therfor the reason that this was stated,in that sense.

Website Dutch Police Dogs:
Algemeen - Landelijk - Koninklijke Nederlandse Politiehond Vereniging
-With a history of more than 100 years, the KNPV has proven its right to exist. The training of police, search and rescue dogs at the level of the KNPV is a beautiful and important task.-

Guess that both official police search dogs and Signi search dogs can not solve all missing cases:
(Cookies op gelderlander.nl | gelderlander.nl)

(Evert – Pagina 3 – Hanno van Mil)

But as a family,I would have too kept searching with the use of dogs,if there was no outcome by police investigation.
And I really hope they find her.It is quite interesting that the police took over and start to dig on monday.Glad that it was picked up!

Family tells this to a blog.
I don't know, why you said that, but RTVDrente is the news channel of the province of Drenthe,so a regional MSM source.

And in Utrecht,LE did not respond to the offer made by SSD,they stated they had enough specialist dogs to do the search, themselves.
