Noorse politie vindt spullen van vermiste Arjen Kamphuis

The Norwegian police found belongings of the missing Dutchman Arjen Kamphuis. According to the Norwegian broadcaster NRK, the police received a report from a fisherman who saw objects floating off the coast near Mount Kvænflåget - between the towns of Fauske and Rognan in the north of the country.

The police do not want to comment on what exactly was found, but say they know for sure that the items belong to Kamphuis. The Dutchman was last seen on 20 August in a hotel in the town of Bodø. The stuff was found east of that place, where cyber security specialist Kamphuis was on holiday.

Last week the Norwegian police confirmed that two mobile phones from Kamphuis had been switched on the week before. That was ten days after he was last seen. It was to be a private telephone and a work telephone, both of which sent out signals for less than an hour.

The signal came from a town south of Stavanger, about 1700 kilometres south of Bodø. Both SIM cards were removed and replaced by German ones. It is unclear who did this.

The police have reason to assume that Kamphuis took the train from Bodø to Rognan on August 20. He would return home on 22 August.

This is looking bad.....
So how come that phone pinged near Stavanger and people claim to have seen him there??

On Tuesday evening, a fisherman found belongings of the missing Arjen Kamphuis in the sea between Fauske and Rognan.

No one has seen the Dutchman in over three weeks.

He traveled to Norway in August, where he had been earlier, to be in the wild and relax. But he did not come home again.

The police in Nordland are still working with full strength to find out where he is. On Monday they found items belonging to the missing Dutchman.

"For the sake of the ongoing investigation, the police can not make public what items we are talking about," police inspector Bjarte Walla told VG.

In a press release issued by the police, they write that they think he took a local train from Bodø to Rognan on 20 August, departing on the route at 16.05. He must have arrived at Rognan at 17.29.

"The police will now conduct further investigations in the area and other investigations related to the discovery. To what extent it can tell if the missing has been in or near the scene, it is not possible for the police to say anything about this at all," according to the police, saying that the investigation continues as normal.

"We follow up on tips and tasks, and will search in the area. We are going to search both at land and at sea."

Where did he go after the checkout?

Kamphuis is described as a colleague of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, security expert and author of a book on information security for journalists.

His friends tell VG that the 47-year-old had had a hectic year and looked forward to a two week holiday in Norway. He is described as an avid hiker.

Police lawyer in Nordland police district, Trond Lakselvhaug, says to Åsted Norway that Kamphuis had stayed a few days in Bodø and that the police believe he had been on a tour of the country.

The last safe observation of him is from when he checked out of the Scandic hotel in Bodø in the 14th of August 20th. He should have been wearing khaki-colored turquoise.

Did he go to Trondheim?

According to WikiLeaks Kamphuis had already ordered train tickets to Trondheim, where he planned to fly home to the Netherlands on 22 August. However, he never appears until the departure.

It is unclear whether Kamphuis was on board the train.

Friends of Kamphuis eventually reacted whenthey could not contact him and went to Amsterdam police and reported him missing.

On August 29, the police in the Netherlands contacted Kripos in Norway.

The police received last night a message from a recreational fisherman at the Kvænflåget between Fauske and Rognan. He had found an object floating in the sea - near land. We can safely say that this item belongs to missing Arjen Kamphuis, said police inspector Bjarte Walla at the Northland police to NRK.

The finding is linked to Arjen Kamphuis, who has been missed for almost a month. The police are confident that the items belong to missing man, but do not want to go into what they have found.

"For the sake of the ongoing investigation, the police can not tell what items are involved."

The police have reason to believe that Arjen took the local train from Bodø to Rognan on 20 August, departing after the route at 16.05 and arriving at Rognan 17.29.

We work out from three theories of what might have happened. This finding does not change the way we investigate. We still keep all venues open and must consider all these three theories further in the investigation.

Police's main hypotheses about Arjen Kamphuis

- Kamphuis has been exposed to an accident
- Kamphuis stays hidden voluntarily
- Kamphuis has been the obect of some criminal act

According to the Dutch media, Kamphuis had planned to return home on August 22 but was last seen August 20 in Bodø.

-To what extent this find makes it possible to tell something about if the missing man has been in or near the site, it is not possible for the police to say something certain at this time.

Kamphuis has been affiliated with Wikileaks. Norwegian police have previously confirmed that they have registered a mobile signal from Kamphuis's telephone in the Stavanger area on 30 August - ie ten days after last observation in Bodø. According to Walla, this is still a current track for the police.

"We have conducted - and will continue to conduct - investigation into the discovery, and we will seek and clarify how it is related to this finding and the other information we have to work out from," Walla said.

Hmmm.... could they have found the foldable canoe, unfolded and upside down in the water?

"The police have reason to believe that Arjen took the local train from Bodø to Rognan on 20 August, departing after route 16.05 and arriving at Rognan 17.29. We ask that the public contact us if they have observations relating to this journey and to movements in the inner Salten area on 20 August and subsequent days," the police writes.

Here is the press release by Nordland Police (Norwegian + English version):
Funn av eiendeler tilhørende Arjen Kamphuis

So now the big questions are:
- would Arjen have gone kayaking in the dark, at 6 o' clock in the evening? I don't think so.
- how come his phone pinged at Stavanger?

Sun does not set until 21.21 hrs in the area. But still, the timing is odd, also if he might have wanted to take the train to Trondheim later that evening. Train to Trondheim departs 22.21 from Rognan.

Not sure if the canoe was found though.

Right, it was in August... But still, dark, I don't mean pitch black, but just simply dark / at dusk.

It's not clear whether the kayak was found or some other item. What ever item, strange to find it in the fjord.

Disappearance of Arjen Kamphuis becomes increasinly mysterious

The traces left by the missing computer security expert Arjen Kamphuis make his disappearance increasingly mysterious. On Tuesday, items were found that according to the Norwegian police are those of Kamphuis. A new trail that doesn't fit with an earlier trail, almost two thousand kilometres away.

Could the local angler who reported Tuesday evening at the police station somewhere in northern Norway have realised the mystery? Just after 19 hours he brought in a load of new questions about the disappearance of Arjen Kamphuis.

The fisherman had found things in the water between Fauske and Rognan. Those turn out to be from Kamphuis, according to the Norwegian police.

The location is more than eighty kilometres east of the coastal city of Bodø, the place where Arjen was last seen on August 20. Along with the announcement of the discovery of Arjen's possessions, the Norwegian police also announced that there are indications that Kamphuis took the train to Rognan on the day of his disappearance. He was supposed to have left just after 4 p.m. and arrived around 5.30 p.m.

But how does the new information relate to an earlier found trace? Because last week the police in Norway reported that Arjen Kamphuis' mobile phone was switched on briefly after its disappearance. Ten days after Kamphuis checked out of his hotel in Bodø, on 30 August, the mobile phone of Kamphuis was in the air for twenty minutes. The Samsung connected just outside Stavanger, in the south of Norway. More than 1700 kilometres from the northern towns of Bodø and Rognan.

The news on the phone last week gave a glimmer of hope to the desperate family and friends of Kamphuis. "We have signals that the person who turned it on also knows the PIN code of the SIM card. So that indicates that it was Arjen himself,'', Ancilla van de Leest, a good friend of Kamphuis, said at the time.
According to the direct colleague of Kamphuis, Marco Visser, the Samsung phone of the cyber expert was secured at the highest level. According to Visser, the chance of someone else getting access to the phone is virtually impossible.

Friends and family have no idea yet how to interpret the new discoveries. "We also don't know what items are involved. Not even if they are actually from Arjan. The Dutch police are less certain than the Norwegian police,'' according to Van de Leest, who is in contact with them. Since this week two Dutch detectives help with the search. According to Van de Leest, they are now on their way to the site.

The discovery of the items also raises the question of what Kamphuis was doing in Rognan. Two days after leaving his luxury hotel in Bodø, the computer specialist would fly back to the Netherlands via Trondheim. He had a ten-hour train journey from Bodø to Trondheim ahead of him.

What feeds the disappearance mystery even more is the background of Kamphuis. He is co-founder of the data company Pretty Good Knowledge and a well-known name in the international world of hackers and cyber security. Among other things, he helps journalists and whistleblower sites like Wikileaks to keep their information out of reach of investigation and intelligence services.

This leads directly to all kinds of conspiracy theories on the internet. That foreign secret services are involved in his disappearance, for example.

Friends and family call such a scenario unlikely. "Of course. Arjen is always involved in projects that are not always pleasing to everyone. But lately he hasn't been doing anything else than anything else,'' Van de Leest says about that. Visser: "In recent months he has only been writing a manual for students. Not really something you make enemies with.''

What could they have found that was not the canoe? What floats? unless the items were found at the shore when the tide brought them in.
What is distinctive enough for a fisherman to want to report it to the Police?

The best floating object is a plastic water bottle that is almost empty. Sneakers may float, and rubber ducklings. But no one would take those to the police.

Lots of English sources suggest that the find was done at sea "off Norway". Technically they may be right, but the alleged location is at the inner end of a fjord, 80 kms from the open sea. And surrounded by many lengths of Norway on both sides.

TV 2 has talked to several fishermen at Rognan, which is amazed at the findings that were made on Tuesday.

From Rognan and beyond the Skjærstadfjord, there is a strong current, among other things, past the Kvæn floget. There is driftwood, plastic and other things in the sea on land.

A few years ago, two reported missing in this area and they are never found, tells locals on Rognan. Just below Kvænfloget it is very deep and in much of the Skjærstadfjord it is deep.

So, considering the currents, the fishermen were surprised that the belongings were found at that spot?

It wouldn't be that dark in Bodö on th 20th of August, civil twilight was at 22,36, at the time the train left and this is how civil twilight looks like:
What Is Civil Twilight?

And for the rest of the night it was nautical twiligh, not even then would it be totally dark. What Is Nautical Twilight?

The article mentions en flytende gjenstand translated: a floating object. Not objects.

If the translation is correct, could it be the canoe with items in it? Can't imagine how his luggage would float, or his laptop.

Dear me, this is not looking good.

IMHO the person who found the phone should come forward asap. Based on the latest findings, I think it is possible that he left his phone somewhere, because he no longer needed it, and the person who found it, kept it instead of bringing it to the police.

Here's hoping that the items do not belong to Arjen Kamphuis.
The Norwegian police say in their press release "Whether the finding can tell if the missing person has been at or near the site of the finding is at this time not possible for the police to state with any degree of certainty."

Confusing timeline of disappearance

New version of the map highlights the mystery of the found items and the phone that connected to the network:

Dm5r3lkX0AA-Q6l.jpg

1. Bodø, Norway, 20-08 check out hotel (*)
2. Trondheim, Norway, 22-08 would leave from airport
3. Vikeså, Norway, 30-08 signal from simcard for 20 minutes
4. Ribe, Denmark, 03-09 seen by witnesses
5. 12-09 Rognan, Kamphuis takes train on August 20 from Bodø to Rognan
6. 11-09 (**) between Rognan and Fauske, belongings found by fisherman

* wrong picture
** 20-09 on the map is a typo.

Timeline in chronological order:

1. 20-08 Bodø, Norway, check out hotel
5. 20-08, Bodø, takes train to Rognan
2. 22-08 Trondheim, Norway, would leave from airport
3. 30-08 Vikeså, Norway, signal from simcard for 20 minutes
3. 30-08 and later, Vikeså, reports of sightings (after TV broadcast 10-09)
4. 03-09 Ribe, Denmark, seen by witnesses
6. 11-09 Between Rognan and Fauske, Norway, belongings found by fisherman

What happened to the German simcard that was inserted in Arjen's phone on 30-08 near Vikeså, has it been traced by the Police?

About the tracks to Denmark:
About the observation in Ribe/Denmark. The newspapers/media refer to the witnesses, who allegedly saw the wanted, as being male and female.
There are apparently two observations in Ribe on 28 and 29 August following Ansilla's statement in a tweet on September 1. (That fits badly with the activation of the mobile phone on August 30 in southern Norway)
The police described the observation in Ribe should have taken place on 3 September
(Are there 3 observations in Ribe)?
From the Ribe area, which is a desolate marshland, one can relatively easily cross the border with Germany unseen.
Ancilla´s 1 september tweet
Dutch Police pressrelease from 6th September

In the NYT article from September 7th there is an observation of the wanted in Esbjerg/Denmark. This is the only media that has stated Esbjerg as a possible place where the wanted has stayed and it does not appear where NYT has the information from.
New York Times article

Relevant locations in Denmark:
Hirtshals; ferries to Stavanger and Kristiansand in southern Norway.
Esbjerg harbor; large fishing fleet.
Billund and Esbjerg airport for scheduled and private air traffic.

Hi Stizzi, welcome to Websleuths! Please shed your light on every mysterious corner of this case!
Many thanks for the warm welcome :) This case drew me in here, when it's finished, let's see if I'm still here on the forum, my gut feeling is that this forum is quite addictive :D

The article mentions en flytende gjenstand translated: a floating object. Not objects.

In the title of the article, "object" = plural (gjenstander) - "Fisker fant gjenstander til savnet nederlender"
"En fisker har funnet eiendeler som tilhører" (belongings) = plural
"gjort funn av eiendeler tilhørende" = plural
"sikkerhet si at denne gjenstanden tilhører" = Singular
"sikre på at eiendelene tilhører" = plural
"med hvilke eiendeler det dreier " = plural
"Han hadde funnet en gjenstand som fløt i havet" = Singular

Article from NRK

They may have found a canoe very close to land, with some stuff in. We do not know if it has been inflated or otherwise kept in the surface. The train track runs at the water's edge so it's easy to throw something out of the window but sought-after is a natural type, so it should be very important before he could do such an act. But it is also strange if an inflated canoe can sail around for 3 weeks in a narrow fjord with trains and a car headway all the way to the water's edge. Hunters, anglers and other naturalists should have seen it in the 3 weeks it floated around unless it has been stuck somewhere.

Arjen Kamphuis would have bought a foldable kayak. This is a flat box / bag that opens and unfolds into a kayak, probably with some clippings.
One commercial ad that I read actually said something like: you can easily take it with you on a cart with your other luggage on the train and get on the water when you feel like.

IMHO he would leave most of his luggage at the railway station if that was possible, but he would take his phone with him. In a watertight bag. Well, that is what most people would do I think, just in case.

Since the police thinks he took the train to Rognan I would think that he took all his luggage with him on the train and planned to board the train to Trondheim from Rognan instead of Bodø. I am not sure it is somewhere to store luggage at the railway station at Rognan, it is a couple of years since I took the train from that station last time.
