What police first thought was another clue in the murder of a young Henderson woman has only led to a new mystery. Before many valley residents were even out of bed this morning, a volunteer search team was combing the windy desert floor in the far southeast end of the valley.

The trained volunteers with the Nevada Center for Missing Loved Ones have been searching five square miles of remote desert for several weeks now, at the request of Henderson investigators. Police say they already discovered human remains, including a skeleton, in their own initial search.

"I know they believe there's something out there," said Frank Mahoney with NCMLO.

Investigators say they first suspected the remains were of a 21-year-old Henderson woman who disappeared three years ago after she became involved in the risky escort business. But Henderson police now confirm a DNA comparison reveals the skull and other bones discovered are not the remains Lindsey Harris.

Harris' dismembered legs were found in a central Illinois field three years ago, but only identified recently. Police say that means the human remains found in the Henderson desert are still unidentified. The volunteers say it is their hope to soon bring closure to another victim's family.

Possibly, this came in email from Jessie's mom:

The following link is to a story that was sent to me (one of many I get) that was on the Las Vegas Now website, written by Alyson McCarthy [Alyson has reported on Jessie & Lindsay Harris' disappearances], but this one seems to hit a little closer to home than most. There are remains that were originally believed to possibly be our Lindsay Harris who went missing on Las Vegas May 5, 2005 - within days of Jessie's arrival there (May 13, 2005), but Lindsay was, thank God, already identified by this time. This area where the remains were found (Henderson, NV) is very close to where Jessie used to live and went missing from (North Las Vegas, NV) - within about 30 or so minutes away.

We have recently been trying to get Jessie's dental records to the North Las Vegas Police Department and to Frank Mahoney of Nevada Center for Missing Loved Ones [he is now a very dear friend of mine and strong supporter in our search for Jessie and has been there since she went missing], but there was a problem with the digital records kept by the dentist, so the orthodontist will have to supply them. Not sure why they have not done so yet, but hey, far be it for me to question the 'whys' of any of this any more, it does not help, so why bother wasting the time & energy to think about it! We asked for Jessie's dental & DNA to be put on file for nearly 2 years before we got the DNA done - only because of another Jane Doe found that may have been Jessie, and thank God was not.

Let's get together and pray for this person they found to be identified, and that it is not Jessie. As always, I do not feel a connection, just that the geographical area makes is a possibility, so we have to find out...right? Pass this around, get everyone to know and let's find out who this is...because they deserve to be known and their family deserves to know, like I said, even it that family is us.

I love you all and thank you for hanging in there during this long 25 months search for my missing daughter, JESSIE FOSTER. And don't forget Jessie's 24th birthday is on Tuesday, May 27th - please light a candle for her at 8PM, pray for her and sing Happy Birthday. We are also letting off helium balloons in her honour from our yard - please join us if you are near > 834 Dominion Street, Kamloops. Donation jar will be available for those wanting to send off a signed balloon to Jessie. Sincerely, Glendene - www.jessiefoster.ca

I'm having a bit of trouble finding an article about the original discovery dating it. May 22 in the thread title is apparently just the volunteer search day before the article was published, and the bones discovery was made some time before that.

I did find this case in Henderson. It's a woman's skull found in January but I'm not sure if it's the same case that's referred to here. There seem to be a lot of bodies in the desert. If "including a skeleton" means they found a complete skeleton it's not her. On the other hand, if they'd already found a complete skeleton (instead of partial remains), why would they have searched five square miles in the hopes of finding more?

An anonymous letter would explain why

So, did LE just find a skull or an entire skeleton? I don't understand why NCMLO would have conducted a secondary search if the remains had already been discovered. :waitasec:

I also don't see Jessie Foster on the list of rule outs on the identifyus UID case. I'm sure they have totally investigated that possibility. Right?

What a convoluted story! I know Frank Mahoney and believe I will drop him a line to see if he knows whatever became of this.

I just realized I forgot to come back and post about the response I received from NCMLO! These remains have not yet been ID'd, but he didn't offer any further details.

There is a situation very similar to this that has come up in the Steven Koecher case in Missing Persons. NCMLO is involved in that search also.

    Hmmmm.

Does any of you know whether Michelle Lynn Benjamin has been ruled out as a possible match?
    http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/benjamin_michelle.html

Age, date and hair color seem to match but unfortunately there's not much info about the UID. I think the UID's facial features look like Michelle's - in her first picture at least. She looks a little different to me in her two pictures though (especially the nose).

Location though seems a far stretch. What do you think?

I think my friend was the one who found this UID. At the time I begged him to report it to LE, but he kept saying he didn't want to get involved; I'm glad he, or somebody, finally let them know. I hope she gets identified.

When did he find her? How long after he found this UID did he report it? That can make a lot of difference in identifying her. Thanks.

I don't remember exactly when he told me, or when he reported her :( Sorry. I just remember that sometime in 2007 he was working in a very specific area right there [it's rural/marshland], and he told me he came across what he thought were human remains. I told him he HAD to report it to LE, but he was hesitant because to be honest, there are lots of weird types living out there [transients, etc---he had a gun aimed at him by a person living in a cardboard refrigerator box while he was out there working one day,was followed and harassed by people on 4wheelers, etc], and he had a lot of work to do out there, for several weeks, and didn't want to disrupt either the "natives" or the project he was there to complete. So he tried to rationalize not-reporting it by saying "I don't know for sure that it wasn't remains of a dog or something, and let's face it, there are probably dozens of bodies out there, and I don't really want to think about that." [which, knowing the type of land/terrain out there, I can't say I blame him. It's very remote.] But I told him even if he wasn't sure, that he should still report it to LE.

I forgot about it for years, because I don't talk to him as much anymore [ok, it's my ex-boyfriend, we broke a month before UID was vound], but ultimately he is a good person at heart, and eventually he usually does the right thing. When I saw this UID and the specific location where she was found, and the time frame when she was discovered, and the nature in which LE was notified, I was pretty sure that she and my friend's discovery were one and the same.

Sorry I can't be of any REAL help!

Thanks for the reply! I understand why he may not have reported. I am sorry you broke up, too. :( I was just wondering more along the lines of the UID date of death. So he worked there in 2007? Any earlier? Just curious.

He may have worked in the area before '07, but I can't say when for sure, he's worked at the same firm for almost 10 yrs and has worked all over the Vegas Valley; it was just this specific situation that stuck in my mind because of the creepy feeling of the whole thing. Sorry :( I think I derailed the discussion.

I don't recall and couldn't directly find this case on Websleuths, so I thought I would post this case. This woman looks so...I don't know..familiar. I really think this case can be solved.

    clark-jane-doe.jpg

In early 2008, police in Clark County, Nevada, received an anonymous letter that included maps of the area around US 93 & Boulder Highway. Police conducted a search and on January 23 discovered a woman’s skull.

Because only a skull was discovered, forensic scientists cannot estimate the woman’s height or weight. Her age is believed to be between 25 and 45 years old. She had red hair. Although no body was located, a red plaid shirt is listed under clothing on her Doe Network case profile: http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/277ufnv.html

Jane Doe is believed to have been dead for approximately six months before being discovered. The University of North Texas holds her DNA records.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner at (702) 455-6649 in reference to Case # 08-0675.

Would it be too far of a stretch to wonder if this person could be Leah Peebles? I mean from what I've watched and read about her, she apparently was into prostitution in NM, and I wouldn't think it would be out of this world for her to have then traveled to Nevada to maybe get away or continue her business, for lack of a better word. Then some time later by hook or by crook, ends up deceased in Nevada? Just a thought.
