I think this Jane Doe was murdered by the same person who murdered Star Valley Jane Doe. Both found in similar area geographically and posed in cross positions. decades apart. This might suggest a serial killer that had been active for a long time! I have always noticed a large number of unidentified females in NV beginning in 1969 all victims of homicide. I have thought that surely some must be connected. Here is the page I made for Star Valley Jane Doe. I believe if we can ID one of these women then maybe their killer can be caught and can shed light on the identity of all of his victims. What could the killer be telling us by placing them in cross positions? Does he believe he is making them sanctified through death... as if killing them was "saving them"? Maybe they were working girls who he viewed as unclean? Or maybe he just hated women and thought they were evil? hm...

A probable Serial Killer who lived in Wyoming might be connected to this Jane Doe IMHO. Dale Wayne Eaton. He would live between CO, ID, NV, and WY over the years. He would have been 26 when the first Elko County Jane Doe was murdered posed in a cross position in 1972. He was active up until 2003 when he was apprehended. He will not talk about any victims or cooperate with investigators.

This, also IMHO, might be how this Shaftner Jane Doe got from Wyoming down to Elko County, NV. If you look at the timeline of his movements he spent considerable time in Elko County, NV dating women. He also was going back to Wyoming in 1994. 1993 is unaccounted for on the timeline.

Hey, I was able to find an article dating back to 1998 using the Wayback Machine.

On Nov. 16, 1993, the body of a still-unidentified woman was found in Elko County, Nev., off the northbound side of Interstate 80, near the Utah border.

Estimated to have been dead for about six days, the woman was found completely nude, lying on her back, her arms spread out to her side in the shape of a cross, legs slightly parted. Investigators believe her killer may have purposefully posed the body. Detectives found drag marks on the ground from the victim's heels.

Police said the victim appeared to be 24 to 28 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 140 pounds. She had a circular scar on her right calf. Investigators say they were able to capture one of the victim's fingerprints.

The site where the body was found lies on the edge of a vast and desolate desert bisected by one of the nation's busiest highways. When a reporter from APBnews.com visited the site -- an impromptu roadside turnoff used by motorists -- it was littered with truck and *advertiser censored* magazines, drug paraphernalia, alcohol bottles, the remains of a fire and a severed deer leg. Two tractor-trailer rigs were parked nearby.

Detectives Dale Lotspeich and Mike Kolsch of the Elko County Sheriff's Office said the victim was shot twice in the chest with a small-caliber weapon. One of the bullets pierced her heart. She was also "beaten from head to toe," according to investigators. Detectives said they recovered bullets used in the killing but declined to release the caliber.

An autopsy found evidence of alcohol and marijuana in the woman's system. Kolsch and Lotspeich said the condition of the victim's vaginal area suggested the offender or offenders may have engaged in post-mortem sex with her corpse.

Police believe the victim was killed at another location and later dumped at the I-80 turnoff. Tire tracks found at the site point to a mid-size to large vehicle, possibly a pickup or van.

Elko County detectives believe the offender is someone who has killed before.

"This person is smart enough to know to get rid of evidence," an Elko detective said. "He was possibly arrested before and physical evidence was used against him."

On Nov. 9, 1993, a male 911 caller told the Nevada Highway Patrol that he saw two men rolling something wrapped in a blue tarp up a hill in the vicinity of the site. Kolsch said the dispatcher didn't report or attempt to trace the call, which emanated from a cellular phone.

Elko detectives said the victim's body was exhumed in 1998 because dental charting -- key to tracing the identities of murder victims -- hadn't been done.

The information about possible necrophilia and being beaten "head to toe" (rather than just her face/head area) are both new to me. Looks like there may have been a sexual assault after all.
 
In ~1999, APB News posted an interactive walkthrough of the Great Basin murders that included this Doe. The original site is no longer up, but there is a veritable treasure trove of information here. Did you guys know that Bitter Creek Betty was listed as a possible Great Basin victim?

Unfortunately, because it's an archived version, many of the links are not working. In this Jane Doe's case, that includes: an audio interview with detectives, dental chart, crime scene photos, and a postmortem photo. Is there any possible way I can access these??

That's the one I was using; the text shows up fine, but pictures and audio don't. I'm afraid they weren't archived..
 
It's possible the body was dumped and the remains assaulted after by opportunists -there may be different crimes/perps in this case.

article said a witness saw 2 men rolling the tarp up the hill. If valid, this makes me wonder if Dale had his friend Billy with him... IF Dale was involved in this. Have been thinking Billy seemed off.

Hm. I really would like those pictures.

I just want this Jane Doe and the other girls found in the Great Basin area Identified so badly. Reading about the state of her remains saddens and disturbs me so deeply. :(

Looking at the NamUs for this Jane Doe I couldn't help but notice that the reconstructions appear quite different between the earlier sketch that's very bold like a lithograph, the more photographic sketch we see used more, and the 3D modeling in clay https://www.identifyus.org/en/cases/4920

I decided to look for matches based on the clay recon to switch things up and I found a resemblance with Vickie Smock:

Her timeline is a bit troubling -she went missing from Salt Lake City en route to Wendover, NV in 1986; NamUs date is listed as January 1 so I suspect the exact date here is unknown. Also, her "age last seen" is listed as 24-26. Her demographics fit well:

She hasn't been seen since. Vickie's family states that it is very unusual for her to leave and not be in contact."

Lee said Chappelle's body was discovered by an unidentified motorist who stopped to rest under a grove of trees near the Derby Dam offramp.

"We believe her time of death was sometime Thursday or possibly Friday," Lee said. "We have no suspects at this time."
Meanwhile, a 24-year-old Chicago man is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Smith, an assistant manager at a Burger King restaurant in Reno.
A Reno judge on Friday set a Sept. 13 preliminary hearing for Avram Nika. Authorities allege a man shot Smith, then drove to Chicago in the victim's car.

I honestly do not think she is Vickie due to her being newly deceased in 1993. Vickie never would have gone that long without contacting family. They both have DNA, it should have hit when Vickie's daughters was processed, but you never know. You can turn it in to be sure.

The one I thought was Vickie is NV Antelope, WhtFem 362UFNV, 25-30, found nude in cave Sept 1986 but the DNA did not hit. I'll have to follow up with Melissa Gregory just to be sure the Doe's DNA was in the same system, I'd be surprised if it wasn't.
 
I wonder if Vicki could be the recent set of remains found in Deaf Canyon, UT. Investigators believe they are from a woman 30-60, but other than that, I haven't found much more on the Jane Doe.
