I will say this - as swjaxon mentioned, the LL/Steven connection has been pointed out, specifically, to LE. I don't really think we know if anything came or will come of it, but it doesn't seem like it.

I also want to point out that Mrs. LL most assuredly knows now that her husband is a criminal. FWIW. :)

If I'm not mistaken, there are tunnels in the area. In fact, all of the tunnels in the city drain not far from there.

You're right, there are a lot of storage units in the area where Steven's phone last pinged. There's some pretty rugged desert there also. There are homeless camps everywhere nowadays![/quote]

BBM, I know! They show them on that Vegas Strip show. BTW, dh said I cant go sewer tunnel exploring while we're there. He's no fun.

I wonder if any of those storage units are rented by anyone we know????

Hi all.
I haven't been near this thread in ages, but Steven has always been in the back of my mind, as I live in Henderson NV somewhat close to where he disappeared 2+ yrs ago. Being from the area I have a few insights/thoughts that might not have been addressed/discussed before.

I tried to update myself via all the posts on this thread, but I'm gonna be honest, it's just too overwhelming. I skimmed through instead, and in that skimming I didn't see any comments yet similiar to what I am and have been thinking for months about this case.

So here are a few thoughts [and please correct me if I have any of this wrong, I am going a lot from memory, since as before stated, trying to find a specific fact in this enormous thread is just too much] [and also I apologize if I offend anybody with what I am about to say, that's not my intention, but I just feel like maybe we have to start thinking out of the box, because nothing else along the usual lines has yielded anything in a long time]:

1) First off, I find the 'in Vegas looking for a job' thing to be somewhat [or rather, way more unlikely than those of you in other parts of the country might consider; I don't know if any of you outside the Southwest are really aware, but we have had, and continue to have, the highest unemployment rate of any city in the country, and it has been that way for several years. If you recall, the housing collapse occurred in November 2008, and the Las Vegas economy quickly IMPLODED around us. Caps intentional. Things got VERY bad, VERY quickly, for pretty much everybody in the Vegas Valley; while national estimates of unemployment were around 15-16%, local estimates were about 20%. Things are still pretty bad, estimated yesterday at about 14% unemployment. So by December 2009, the Vegas economy was firmly in the depths of this recession; people who had held the same job for 10,12, 15 years, were being laid off due to lack of work. Therefore I think that it is likely that even a cursory attempt by an out-of-state jobseeker to contact local employers would have yielded the same information I have mentioned above; NOBODY was hiring. WHAT in the world would make Steven think "I need to find a job. Oh I know---I'LL GO TO VEGAS!" ...I just don't see it.

2) IF by some strange circumstance Steven WAS in Henderson going to meet a potential employer, I highly doubt he would have shown up in a sweatshirt. The boy knew very well how to dress appropriately [as evidenced by his neat appearance in photos at family and church functions], and being pretty desperate financially, would have even had more motivation to dress nicely in order to impress a potential employer. Therefore I find that either a) it wasn't Steven in the video surveillance image after parking the car, or b) he was there in a non-employment capacity.

3) It seems very odd to me, that someone who was reportedly so cash-strapped, would spend all that gas money on the mysterious travels to ‘Sacramento’ and Las Vegas; the only way it makes any sense to me, would be if Steven expected to receive some cash somewhere during the trip---otherwise it is highly illogical, IMO.

4) The area Steven’s car was last seen is in a completely residential area; it’s in Sun City Anthem, which is a high-end retirement community in Henderson. It is only accessed by one main road, and is not near any commercial areas accessible by foot. The idea that Steven was in the area looking for a job at one of the neighboring businesses---if in fact it WAS Steven on the video---is just not feasible.

5) Steven was behaving oddly, suddenly traveling great and inexplicable distances, being deliberately vague about his whereabouts and destinations; he even behaved oddly with regards to his church obligations. What could have spurred these sudden behaviors? The most common reasons in my opinion, for a 20-year-old kid to suddenly start acting like this, would be either a Woman or Cash. There was no indication whatsoever that there was any woman/women he was conversing with, so while I invite anyone to investigate that possibility if they think it viable, at this time I just don’t really see any signs there was a woman-issue, so I am focusing on option B...CASH. He was reportedly very cash-strapped. Is there ANY possibility that he might have gotten SO desperate financially, that maybe he broke down and got into just a little easy dope selling/transporting to pick up a little cash tax-free? I know it sounds WAY out there, he appears to have been a good, moral, churchgoing boy, but come on now, let’s all get off our collective high horses for a minute, and admit what we all pretty much know: it would pretty easy to get into moving a little dope, if one were interested and in need of some quick cash. Most of us knows someone who smokes and/or sells weed, and I think we know that the cash for marijuana is quick and easy to come. Transporting is a short hop-skip when it comes to the ‘weed' business. ....IS THIS REALLY SUCH A FAR-FETCHED SUPPOSITION? Normally I don’t like to make far-flung projections and theories of “what if he.....”, but in this case the odd behavior leading up to Steven’s disappearance leaves a H.U.G.E. question mark that HAS to be addressed!

6) The location where the car was left is somewhat close to a small man-made lake in the Sun City Anthem community; do we know whether that lake was searched for clues or a body? Let’s be plain here, people. He is likely dead. Sorry. Sick of pussy-footing around.

As I said before, I think we HAVE to at least try to think outside the box, because what we know so far, is not yielding anything I am just trying to find a way to the answer.

Here is a good synopsis of his travels prior to disappearing including things he used his bank card for. There's supposed to be a timeline link on here but it takes me to google and says I have to have permission to access the timeline.

What I find odd is that I dont see any charges for lodging but it appears that he was in Ruby Valley for lunch, went to Springville Utah that same day (so it doesnt appear he went to Sacramento) and then was in Wendover Utah for lunch the next day. According to mapquest he would have had a period of time that he could have slept. Maybe in the car? Maybe at someone's home? Then he made the purchases of the toys (for his brother's kids?? but we dont know that for sure). Then he went home and headed back out to Henderson.

Could there be the possibility that he had gotten into gambling to make money? There is a casino in Placerville,Ca between Sacramento and Reno. Are there any casinos near SCA neighborhood?

OK then how about a synopsis of his crimes?

When Steven when missing, the LL was under federal indictment for possession of a stolen Porsche SUV, and drugs and weapons charges. The charges were eventually tossed from federal court because Orem PD conducted a bad search (they looked in areas not outlined in the warrant). Charges were re-filed in state court and a plea deal was struck. I had the details of his plea written down somewhere, but the mess that is my stack of notepads.... If I recall, he did not serve jail time.

He said he was going to Sacramento when he was at the ranch in RV, but the folks he was visiting advised against it due to weather conditions. Personally, I don't believe he ever had any intention of going to Sacramento that day and there is no evidence that he ever did.

If he was gambling, there are casinos much closer to St. George than Reno or Placerville. Vegas, of course. But Mesquite is even closer and we know he was in Mesquite the day before he went to Henderson.

Totally agree. And it has been said there was plenty of work in St. George.

I don't recall a sweatshirt. But I don't recall what I had for lunch yesterday, either!

I agree that his travels, considering his financial circumstances, were very odd.

4) The area Steven’s car was last seen is in a completely residential area; it’s in Sun City Anthem, which is a high-end retirement community in Henderson. It is only accessed by one main road, and is not near any commercial areas accessible by foot. True.

5) Steven was behaving oddly, suddenly traveling great and inexplicable distances, being deliberately vague about his whereabouts and destinations; he even behaved oddly with regards to his church obligations. I don't entirely discount the drug theory. However, he was still strapped for cash when he went missing, so it clearly wasn't a lucrative endeavor for him. If it was weed, I doubt he needed to travel to a retirement community in Henderson on a Sunday to make a sale. There would have been plenty of customers in St. George and I would assume the good folks of Henderson would have their own suppliers.

That said, maybe it wasn't weed, but something else. And maybe he wasn't doing it to make money for himself, but rather to pay off a debt.

Also - Steven was 30 when he went missing.

6) The location where the car was left is somewhat close to a small man-made lake in the Sun City Anthem community; do we know whether that lake was searched for clues or a body? Let’s be plain here, people. He is likely dead. Sorry. Sick of pussy-footing around.

Are you referring to the golf course? If so, it was searched. In any case, he would have surfaced by now.

As I said before, I think we HAVE to at least try to think outside the box, because what we know so far, is not yielding anything I am just trying to find a way to the answer.

I honestly don't believe there's one, single theory that hasn't been brought up and discussed multiple times!

I strongly believe the answers have been there all along, they just aren't being viewed properly or objectively by the folks that have the authority to act on them!

As I said before, I think we HAVE to at least try to think outside the box, because what we know so far, is not yielding anything I am just trying to find a way to the answer.

Malaika, Although I agree with Fairy that just about everything's been considered here, I often find that a collection of the known and previously discussed facts presented in a particular way is helpful to give a fresh prespective. I like your idea of two basic options, romantic or money related. However, I would add to your facts a couple of things, firstly that as a 30yo post-missionary morman yet unmarried, he was an "outlier" in that aspect of his life, and so I think that that is something to consider.

Secondly, though, I do think that his most pressing issue seems to have been money -he even had an argument with his father about it in the days leading up to his disappearance (not to mention the fact that five minutes after that argument and at 9 o'clock at night he started the manic driving.)

I suppose overlaid on all of these things one has to consider a couple of other basic points about him: That he had been a bit "depressed" lately, that he had the slightly odd habit of delay in conversation ("searching for a word" or something like that), and that he had complained of not being able to see his friends because he worked nights, but then decided to move away from his friends/family to St. George where he essentially didn't know anyone and which was also a much smaller job market than Salt Lake, where he previously lived and which was close to friends/family.

The more I think about this case, inspite of all of the other issues in his life, the closer I get to his financial situation being related to the disappearance. It's the most immediate, pressing issue in his life that we know of. Just some thoughts.

[I won't bother re-quoting my last post, haha]

1) My mistake about Steven being 30. I had forgotten that in the months since I've been on this thread. So what do we make of that? I wonder how his family felt, and how he felt, about being such an 'advanced age' [har har] and unmarried [rather atypical for your average Mormon male]? Does his family know if it was an important issue for Steven at the time of his disappearance, or did he not seem focused on it?

2) I should correct my previous statement: Although Anthem is primarily considered a 'retirement' community, and is heavily populated with retirees, it's not EXCLUSIVELY a retirement community; rather, it is a high-end housing development area that anyone can live in, provided they have the financial means. Celebrities often have homes in the area. Of course the area Steven's car was left in is in the smaller-home area of Anthem, but I don't think location necessarily rules out a possible drug connection; here dealers [the smart successful ones anyway] have been known to buy nice homes in quiet low-crime areas in order to fly under the radar. Just saying.

3) HOWEVER in rereading the News 8 timeline, I see that a narcotics dog found no indication of narcotics in his car...which does make the 'drug runner' angle seem less plausible.

4) Does anybody have any other ideas? For possible reasons Steven could have been doing so much traveling, so surreptitiously? I still think the 'job hunting' and 'cemetery visiting' angles are completely off. One isn't financially feasible [all that gas, 1200 miles in 2 days!], and the other doesn't make sense at the time........

Sure-I have often wondered if Steven left something at the ranch that hasnt been found yet. :)

What ranch are you talking about? I don't remember that part.

Malaika, I think that Believe is talking about the place where SK visited on his manic drive to/through (can't remember) West Valley. He dropped in on the parents of a woman he knew. She actually lived in Salt Lake at the time and so wasn't at her folks place when he dropped in. One of the questions discussed here quite often is why he would have dropped in there -he surely must have known that she didn't live there. He had been there, once, though, and my understanding is that that is really how he knew her and her parents. He was part of a group from church who got together to help the family at the ranch for a day and my recollection is that he actually met her at/during that project.

Hope that helps and anyone who remembers differently, please jump in here.

I'm a long-time lurker but had been staying off WebSleuths for a couple of months. (I tend to spend too much time here when I am supposed to be doing other work). But anyway, last night I gave in and got caught up on this and a couple of other threads that I follow...

I was really intrigued by this information about the Landlord. I think the theory that SK got behind in rent, and then ended up doing some sort of "delivery" projects for the landlord fits very well with the evidence at hand.

I tend to think that SK was a victim of foul play due to these activities. I think his actions fit well with someone doing a drug or weapons transport. However, I could never figure out how SK had met up with someone in this "scene." He seems like a straight-laced and kinda awkward guy who would not exactly be chatting about drugs/weapons transport with someone that he had just met, ya know? And it is hard to imagine how he would have responded to a Craigslist ad or the like with NO trail on his computer or cell phone. I always felt dubious that he had made such arrangements from a library computer or with a pay phone/second cell phone. I just don't think he was sophisticated enough to cover his tracks that well.

The landlord theory fits quite well, I think!! A fair amount of phone contact between them! And it provides an explanation for how SK came to know someone with underworld connections. And so what if the landlord's wife seems sincere in her efforts to find SK? She probably doesn't know what is really going on.

Anyway, I hope that LE will look at this.

I'm the same way, Essbee. I have to mandate a 'break period' from WS periodically so I don't get too caught up, and let my work and personal obligations slide! LOL

It is unfortunate that his laptop went missing, obviously there will have likely been clues to his disappearance on it. I wonder if there is a way to subpoena the email records for his account? Or is that something that is only done once there is a suspect?

I am also curious, what about Steven's friends? We know he was close to his parents and very active in his church, but I mean REAL FRIENDS? So far it doesn't sound like he had anybody like that, who he confided in, even a little bit? Doesn't that seem a little weird?

Did LE in Utah search hard enough amongst his 'known' friends for any info? Did his family search hard enough amongst his non-LDS friends? Did he have any non-LDS friends? Cuz to me it sounds like either he had no 'real' friends, or someone didn't investigate enough to find his 'real' friends, if they did exist.

Because it seems that he wasn't as close to his LDS friends as originally indicated, because he didn't give them any explanation why he was in Vegas, nor discuss his plans for traveling throughout Utah and Nevada on this 3-day stint. For someone who was reportedly 'very involved' in his church, seems a little odd to not mention an out of town trip to ANYONE you're supposedly close to?? That's why it doesn't seem to me that he had any 'real' friends in the church.

The reason I ask about his 'real' friends is that, judging by pictures and family statements, it appears Steven was a normal, well-adjusted, social guy [not appearing to be a loner or social outlier], so for not one person to have even the slightest idea what he was doing traveling, tells ME that either 1) he did have good friends outside the LDS church/community somewhere that he might've shared more info with, but that no one was aware of or acknowledged, or 2) he was involved in something SOOO sordid that he couldn't tell a single soul?
