2 dead, 14 wounded in mass shooting in Rochester, New York
''There are two people dead and at least 14 others injured following a mass shooting at a backyard party in Rochester, New York, overnight, according to the Rochester Police Department.

The shooting took place on Pennsylvania Avenue around 12:25 a.m. ET, according to authorities. Police say several dozen rounds were fired.

This is "truly a tragedy of epic proportions," Rochester interim Police Chief Mark Simmons said during a press conference early Saturday morning. "Sixteen victims is unheard of."

One deceased victim is a female aged 18-22 and the other is a male, also aged 18-22. The 14 surviving victims were taken to two local hospitals. Simmons said none of the other victims have suffered life-threatening injuries.''

Mass shooting at New York house party leaves 2 dead, 14 wounded
''The acting police chief, Simmons, expressed frustration early Saturday that someone had held a large, late-night party amid that tumult, apparently in defiance of a state ban on large gatherings because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is yet another tragedy where individuals are having these illegal, unsanctioned house parties taking place in these properties, which – number one – is not safe because of COVID, because of the conditions,” Simmons said. “And then you add in alcohol and violence and it just becomes a recipe for disaster.”

''Officers responding to calls of shots fired found “approximately 100 people” running from the scene, Simmons said. Before the call, police were not aware of the party and had received no complaints about noise, he said.

The wounded were being treated at local hospitals. Two more people were hurt while fleeing, the Major Crimes Unit said in a tweet. Despite the lack of arrests, Simmons said there was no reason to believe the neighborhood was unsafe''.

Rochester shooting: At least 2 dead, 14 wounded in house party
rbbm Probably should have put this thread in the rampage killing forum.
''No suspects are in custody, Simmons said. No motive for the violence is known. He said it was too early to know if multiple shooters were responsible.

Jasmin Lopez and John Santiago awoke after midnight to gunshots. They found two teens hiding in their driveway. “You could see the fear in his eyes," Santiago said. "He was scared.” They got in car and drove off.

They said the scene was chaotic. “There were kids throwing up, hiding between bushes, bleeding," Lopez said. She said her first two calls to 911 went unanswered.

When police arrived, they saw scores of people running from the scene and found multiple people who had been shot. Simmons described it as "a very chaotic scene."

''Before dawn, Warren issued a statement:

“I’ve been briefed by Acting Police Chief Simmons on the shooting event which occurred on Pennsylvania Avenue in the City of Rochester. Our Pathways to Peace Team is on the ground and working with the victims and their families. I’m asking the community for prayers and support for all involved.

"This tragic act of violence has impacted many people's lives and families. I’m begging everyone to remain calm and exercise deep restraint as RPD investigates what happened here and seeks those responsible. As soon as additional information is available, the police department will provide updates on this matter. Please keep our city in your continual prayers.”

''The extent of Saturday morning's violence is considered a mass shooting, defined as an incident in which four or more people are shot, fatally or otherwise''.

UPDATE (9/20/2020 at 8:33 a.m.) -- The two victims killed in the shooting have been identified as 19-year-old Jaquayla Young and 19-year-old Jarvis Alexander. Young was a former East High School student and Alexander was a U-Prep graduate and former football athlete.

2 victims killed in Rochester shooting identified

As many as 100 people were at the gathering when the shooting started just before 12:30 a.m., Simmons said. He said police were still trying to piece together who opened fire and who the intended targets may have been.

The party appeared to be a small, invitation-only event that grew in size. Over 40 shots were fired by three or four suspects after an argument broke out, police said.

Rochester Shooting: 19-Year-Old Victims Jarvis Alexander and Jaquayla Young Remembered as Bright Students
''Track star Jarvis Alexander and cheerleading captain Jaquayla Young, both 19 years old, were killed early Saturday morning during the shooting at an upstate New York backyard party, which is now being called the largest recorded shooting in Rochester. Additionally, 14 people were injured at the party, where more than 100 people attended and at least 40 rounds were fired, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.''

''Alexander, who was a sophomore at Alfred University at the time of his death, was remembered for his positive attitude, good grades and love for sport.

He attended high school at University Preparatory Charter School, where he was known for being a strong sprinter and a valuable member of the school’s relay team. "Without a question, if he said he was going to do something, he did it," his track coach Majied Eason told the Democrat & Chronicle.

Young, who was attending Monroe Community College, graduated from East High in 2019. Not only was she the captain of the cheerleading team, Young was known for her academic achievements, including becoming an Urban League of Rochester Black Scholar and a school ambassador, and continued to be involved in student life as an alumna after graduation.''
