NY - 2 yr old sexually attacked by Pitbull, Tonawanda

Another neighbor! Hey!

I think there must be more. I wonder about the expert mentioned in the article above and the five cases he has investigated. Were they like this case or were there differences?

There is definitely something amiss here. It's sad-to say the least. Even my husband keeps asking questions and throwing out theories since I told him about this story, usually he forgets them within a day.

I myself am VERY familiar with pit bulls and never have I heard anything like this. How did the dog get the boys clothes and diaper off? There has to be more to this story.

The above article answers your question:

Lockport Police Detective Capt. Larry Eggert said the toddler had removed his own soiled diaper and asked to be changed just before the attack. His mother sent him into the living room to get a new diaper, Eggert said.

I do believe that this is possible. My aunt used to have a pit bull that she had to get rid of because of a similar situation. Well, not exactly the same but the dog constantly tried to mount her 11 year old son. Once the dog busted through the bedroom door (they had to lock it because the dog would get on top of the boy while he was asleep). On two separate occasions the dog jumped through the window after the boy left the house. My aunt used to wonder if the boy was "experimenting" with the dog. They had the dog for several years before this happened. I think it lasted about a week and then she got rid of the dog. It was just.......weird.

I haven't seen this story linked yet.
Behavioral experts think scent may have triggered pit bull attack

MissieMt, thanks for posting the article, it had a lot more details than any of the others I have read--it was long too.

Below are some snips from the article:

Now, investigators are looking at the question on everyone’s mind: What would motivate a family dog with no history of aggression to do something like this?

Behavioral specialists will be brought in to study the dog and try to figure out what triggered the attack.

“Because of the shocking nature of the case, you just want to make sure there’s nothing left unturned,” Eggert said.

Motivation

Holly Hackmer, a veterinary technician at Brighton-Eggert Animal Clinic in Tonawanda, said she believes the dog may have smelled something in the air that triggered the attack.

“Maybe this dog smelled a female going into heat in the area,” she said. “We see dogs jump through windows, go through doors. They become overly aggressive. It’s the testosterone running through their system.”

Madeline Friedman, owner of Innovative Reality Dog Training and Behavior Consulting in New York City, said the dog could have even smelled something on the child.

Friedman — who prefers to call the incident an “anomaly” instead of a “sexual attack” — said dogs have over 250 million scent detectors in their noses, while humans have only 5 million. Several things could have contributed to the smells in the air that day, including the early-afternoon humidity and the fact that the boy had just removed a dirty diaper.

“Human bodies are always giving off scents,” she said. “For all we know, (the child) may have had some kind of urinary tract infection, which would cause the smell of the child to be really kind of motivating to the dog to explore the scent.”

Friedman said it’s difficult to pin down the dog’s motivation, but it was likely not malicious.

“It appears to be more a misunderstanding of dogs’ senses,” she said. “It is highly unlikely that the dog was motivated by sex-seeking from this child in any way whatsoever.”

The behavior could have even been unconsciously encouraged by the child’s family.

“Maybe the dog sniffed the diaper before, and maybe the parents thought it was funny,” she said.

Bad for the breed

The incident has sparked furious debate about pit bulls, a breed notorious for aggressive behavior.

Chille has said the family of the young boy attacked on Sunday wants the dog to be euthanized, but that has not been decided yet.
Lots more at link.

One of the articles listed above says over 20 people have called the SPCA to adopt this dog. What in the world? I don't get it.

I read this last night. And despite all of the other things that make me wanna yak in regards to this case, this is the thing that made me go 'What the??'

Neither do I! I just can't imagine anyone really wanting to take this dog into their home. Sometimes I think people forget the differences between humans and animals (dogs). I love children, and I like and enjoy dogs, but I do value a human's life, well being and safety over an animal's life. JMO

I think it would make INTERESTING reading to compile a list of true reasons the people called. Who was it that wanted the dog? Pedofiles with ED? Home *advertiser censored* afictionadoes? Men who thought it sounded interesting? Women who thought it sounded more interesting than men?

They ought to write a secondary article on these folks.

Just when you thought this story could not get any more disturbing.

I'd definitely love to see that article, Glitch!

If we look back at the first pages of this thread, there were posters who said this story could not possibly be true, that the poor dog was the scapegoat for sexual molestation by the parents.

I suspect most of the people who called to adopt the dog had similar views.

While I am one of those people, I still just cant understand how this happened. Has the dna came back yet? who else was there at the time? Why did the dog have enough time to do this? And excuse me for this one, but wouldnt a 2 yr old be way low to the ground? I am just still so confused. I want more info!

This is horrific! And I really wonder about the 20 people who called to adopt the dog, that's odd.

there is always people who will adopt an animal that has been in the paper for just about anything...even dogs that have killed....some people seem to think they can save the dog or change the dog or it wasnt the dogs fault it was the owners....
Im all for saving animals but come on there are some...like this one that just needs to be put down...whether or not this dog really did this on his own or not...he did it once....he has a high risk of doing it again.

On one hand, I think you are probably right. On the other hand, I find we on this site tend to believe others would act as WE WOULD act, or think as WE WOULD think.

I find, quite often, that other people tend to NOT think.

For the best example - I read this SAME article on an RSS feed being discussed over at a website called Rotten.com and you'd freak out if you saw what those people were saying about the dog, the kid, the parents. Let's just say the site is aptly named.

I stay away from rotten.com. There is no purpose to that website. It's disgusting.

Actually I don't believe the dog was a scapegoat because it was said there were Witnesses..
I contend someone in that house trained this dog to do such things.
I further contend that people interested in the dog are either A) bunny/tree hugging imbeciles or B) Perverts themselves
