A Queens woman was found slain in a marshy area near Howard Beach after she went out for her evening jog Tuesday, law-enforcement sources said.

Karina Vetrano, 30, was reported missing by her father when she didn’t return from her regular run along the Belt Parkway’s bike path at about 5 p.m., according to the sources.

Shortly after her worried dad, a retired firefighter, called 911, police found the body of the St. John’s University graduate in the high-weeded area off 165th Avenue and 78th Street at about 10:30 p.m., the sources said.

Sources said a cause of death has not been determined, but she appeared to have been strangled and her jogging pants were pulled partway down.

Those living nearby told reporters that 'hobos and bums' often congregate in the bushes just off the bike path.

One said there are 'shanty houses' nearby.
NYPD's Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said on Wednesday that Vetrano's father told her not to run down the path.

"Running was one of Vetrano’s passions, Hartstein said. A passion she almost lost as a child.

She had surgery on both sides of her legs when she was young and doctors told her she would never run again.

'But she ran and she ran well,' Hartstein said. 'Every night she’d run the path with her father. She did it every day and it was her thing.'"

NYPD called in the FBI for help because her body was found on federal parkland.

I misread the article and thought Mrs. Vetrano had received this letter. However, no one should receive such a letter. Let the courts dispense justice.

This is off the subject but still has to do with a Queens girl.. since this is the most active thread I have been on I wanted to know if anyone has any idea on how I can start a thread on a missing person cold case. This girl Valerie Smith from Long Island City Queens has been missing since 1981 and there are lots of photos of her but no thread that has been started on her here on websleuths for her. Just wondering if one could get started.. I would love to start one for her as her birthday is coming up and its sad she has still not been found.

The go fund me page was shut down. He does not need a go fund me acct. He has a team of Legal Aid Lawyers.
I dont know if the killer was on SSI or not. Checks stop if you are in jail for 30 days or more. Perhaps the family wants to supplement their income. :denied:

I'm glad they caught this guy but wish justice would move quicker. Hard to see Karina's thread so quiet!

I'm eager to see what other evidence they have. I know he will be convicted. I just want everyone who said he was framed to see he wasn't

They know he was not framed. In the meantime, I hope the killer is :banghead::

If his supporters want to insist he was framed, I'll frame his mugshot for them.

    That's a huge step!

Queens lawmakers’ calls to allow the use of familial DNA testing moved closer to being answered on Monday, March 27, as the DNA Subcommittee of the New York State Commission on Forensic Science unanimously agreed to allow expanded genetic testing to help investigators solve heinous crimes.

Howard Beach jogger Karina Vetrano was training for a planned November marathon in Cuba when she was killed in Spring Creek Park in August.

But in March, Vetrano’s family and friends traveled to Havana to symbolically fulfill her dream of a trip to Cuba. They also left a little of her behind, sprinkling a small amount of her ashes in a quiet park under a brilliant Caribbean sun, her father said.
