Auburn (WSYR-TV) – Auburn Police have confirmed that the body of a woman found buried in the area of a nature trail on Wednesday is that of Katie Socci. In addition, they revealed the cause of death: strangulation and suffocation.

They have ruled her death a homicide, but said that they still have not arrested a suspect in relation to their investigation.

This case caught my eye because I grew up in CNY, not too far from Auburn.

RIP, Katie. What a sad case. It really does seem like she was trying to do what was best for her and her child by getting away from her ex...

Auburn police on Thursday said an autopsy determined 29-year-old Katie Socci (SOH'-see) died from asphyxia after being strangled.

At his arraignment on those charges in Cayuga County Court this afternoon, David F. McNamara exchanged heated, inaudible words with the younger brother of Katie Socci, whose body was found in a makeshift grave off a city nature trail last Wednesday.

I just get so tired of reading these stories over and over. Another precious child has lost her Mommy due to a violent who can't take no for an answer, so senseless it's mind boggling.

Rest in peace Katie. I hope your family lovingly raises your beautiful little Sydney and is comforted by the reminders of you, that live on in her.

Socci, 29, was killed on June 15 and her body was discovered in a shallow grave near a hiking trail off Dunning Avenue. Her 23-month-old daughter is living with her parents, who reside outside Auburn.

No one has been charged in Socci’s slaying but her former live-in boyfriend, David F. McNamara, 34, of Auburn, is the only named suspect in the case, according to Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann.

'Person of interest' in Socci murder pleads guilty to unrelated drug charges

The man prosecutors have pointed to as the, "person of interest," in the Katie Socci killing has plead guilty to unrelated drug charges.

David McNamara was in Cayuga County Court Tuesday morning. Prosecutors say he entered guilty pleas on two counts. McNamara admitted falsifying a prescription at a pharmacy to get his hands on hydrocodone. He also plead guilty to criminal sale of a controlled substance.

Was thinking about this case today for some reason, and looked for updates.

McNamara's murder charges were thrown out, but that is being appealed.

Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann gave extensive detail about evidence in the case. He said they had evidence showing that the murder was premeditated and that the grave Socci was found in was dug before the day of the murder.
