NEW CITY, N.Y. (AP) — The man accused of crashing a powerboat into a barge on New York's Hudson River, killing two friends, told rescuers he'd been "drinking all day," a prosecutor said Wednesday......

Defense attorney David Narain said outside court, "This is the first time we're hearing those statements."........

John pleaded not guilty to all 18 counts in an indictment charging him with vehicular manslaughter and operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs, among other things......more.......

You would think him telling rescuers he'd been drinking all day would have come out before now. Very strange.

From link above...

Prosecutors have said John had nearly twice the legal level of alcohol in his system when the boat crashed on the night of July 26 into a barge involved in the construction of a new Tappan Zee Bridge.

My heart and my prayers go to everyone involved in this horrific tragedy.

The way that the media is portraying Jojo is completely false. He is a good guy and he would never put his friends in danger. The accident was as a result of the poorly lit barges. The entire community is supporting his innocence, because he is a kind person who would go out of his way for anyone. He was not drunk/intoxicated, their other friends on the boat (and all other evidence) confirmed this. With all due respect, the families are not just being gracious, they are supporting him because he is innocent. The authorities lit up the barges to be more visible AFTER the accident happened.

GOD BLESS everyone involved.

So all this noise about him ABSOLUTELY not being drunk and how everyone present "confirmed this" turns out to be complete bunk and he actually had a BAC twice the legal limit?

He may be a "good guy" but he most certainly did "put his friends in danger."

Very sad story.

Yeah, looks like massive case of denial for those closest involved. It certainly appears that drunk-boating was a much bigger factor in this tragedy than the lighting conditions.

But the sentencing rankled his victims’ relatives.
As part of the plea deal, John will serve two years concurrently, plus another year for violating probation on a drug rap — making him eligible for parole in as little as 16 months.<snip>

The Coast Guard and the state Thruway Authority, which will own the $3.9 billion bridge, have said the barge was properly lit.
“That aspect of the case was fully investigated, and in the end, there was no evidence whatsoever that would have supported any criminal charges,’’ DA Thomas Zugibe said after John’s sentencing. “We believe he was solely responsible.’’
Zugibe noted that John had boated past the barge earlier that day.
“He knew where it was, but because of his state, he couldn’t deal with it,’’ he said.
