A former teacher accused of possessing child pornography and running a Web site devoted to the topic of torturing and cannibalizing children was actually a caring and devoted teacher who wouldn't harm anyone, parents told a federal judge Wednesday.

Michael Kelly Reiner, 46, pleaded not guilty last week to federal child pornography charges in connection with images investigators say they found on his computers. Reiner, who had worked at the Long Island School for the Gifted in Huntington Station for 18 years, was fired last week after his arrest.

This is interesting. Thanks for posting it. Can someone's public life and private fantasies remain separate? Is a man who fantasizes about these sorts of things and collects porn about these sorts of things destined to act them out?

I think the internet makes it so much easier for people of like minded sexual persuasions to seek each other out, swap stories, picture, fantasies...

I sure as heck would NOT trust this man around my children... it think these parents are sick to support him... IMO he is destined to act out his fantasies sooner or later...

What the heck is wrong with some people? Fantasizing, but not acting (yet) about such things is a form of pedophilia and perversion and I don't care who says different. Normal decent people are not interested in such things and would be very careful about anything that they researched online, knowing what is appropriate and what is not.

"obsessively followed real cases of missing and murdered children" could this quote define anyone on websleuths?
I don't understand what reason probable cause they would have to search his computer.

Yes, it could define all of us...lol.

They had to have probable cause. The article just does not say what it is.

I sometimes worry that if my daughter gets kidnapped, the police will focus only on me, and not whoever did it - due to my being on this site so often.

The parents that are defending this man are demonstrating something called DENIAL so they don't have to feel GUILT at sending their kids to school with this guy, or WORRY that this person might have hurt their kids.

I feel (my opinion only) there's a difference between secret sexual fantasies that involve adult/adult opposed to adult/child. I'm not sure I'd ever be comfortable with an adult who fantasied about children (especially the eating them part) because that sort of relationship would NEVER be right. Most people have fantasies, but they're about other adults and a consensual act and that's okay. I think he could possibly have private "interests" that he would never actually pursue, but that doesn't mean I want him teaching my kids or being aorund them.

I read a very interesting article a while back. It was written about Ted Bundy. The article referenced interviews with Ted, in which the progression from a young troubled boy to a serial killer was so plainly spelled out. In particular, he spoke about following women and just fantasizing about what he'd like to do. Then one day, the compulsion to DO the fantasy was too much, and he followed through.

I think this teacher will one day cross the line. One day those pictures and fantasies will not satisfy this man, and he will need to DO what he has dreamed of doing.

No way would I leave my child in this man's class, and if that school board knows what its doing, it will work HARD to be sure this man is never in a classroom again.

We are on Websleuths reading about all kinds of hideous murders, kidnappings, etc. People might look at that and think that someday after reading about it, we would do it. I don't think so. I have read true crime books for years. I love Ann Rule especially. I read about crimes here all the time. No way do I ever think about doing it. I wonder what police would think though if someone close to me was murdered. Or even what might happen to my poor husband if I should be murdered. There is all this reading about murder on the internet, and my husband never touches the computer except for sports scores. But could he prove it?

I agree with all of you. I visit this site often, though I don't post very much. I also visit a few other crime boards, missing persons boards, and sites for unidentified persons. I also read true crime books, I wonder what people would say about me if one of mine disappeared?

One of the most common sexual fantasies of both men and women is rape and yet rape is abhorent, abnormal and something decent people aren't interested in in reality.

So what's the difference between fantasizing about rape and fantasizing about other things that are disgusting? I don't think most people who fantasize about rape go on to become rapists or rape victims. I wonder if most people who fantasize about the stuff that this man fantasized about go on to commit crimes against people.

I did read the Ted Bundy article that another poster posted and I do understand that there is a progression through pornography that can lead some people to chase thrills with increasingly antisocial and dangerous behavior.

This is one of the reasons that I wish we knew more about pedophiles. Are there some pedophiles that fantasize all their lives, but never act because they know it's wrong? I don't know - it just raises lots of questions in my mind.

I don't know who all these people are that fantasize about rape.
I know I don't and have never been told that any of my friends do either.

I am not sure how accurate the statement about that being a popular fantasy is.

Furthermore Txvicki is correct and its not a form of pedophelia it is by definition pedophelia.. Period.

To fantasize about children in a sexual manner makes one a pedophile.
The actual act of following through makes one a child molestor.

These parents are sickos. If he has that fantasy why on earth would anyone want their children anywhere near him??

I absolutely agree that the man in this article is a pedophile. Pedophelia is a sexual orientation and I don't think people are capable of changing their sexual orientations/predilictions.

My broader question is - can you be a pedophile (fantasize about it) and not act on it?

Several of the most recent studies about sexuality and human nature name rape as a top fantasy. Most women who fantasize about rape are embarrassed to tell anyone about it, so I am more apt to believe the results of an anonymous poll. In any event, I have had several female friends admit to this as a fantasy.

Does sexual fantasy always become reality? Does it have to progress that way? Or can fantasies remain just that: fantasies - private and safe to fantasize about because you know you'd never be interested in really having them happen?

    You raise a good question.
Possibly people can have fantasies and not act upon them.
However the teacher in the above story was acting on them by having the child porn on his computers. Real children were victimized in order for those pictures to be created and men like this weather they activiley molest a child or not have created an environment of supply and demand.

Possibly the answer to your question is .. Only if the oppurtunity doesn't present itself.
I view this man as actively seeking food for his sick fetish and IMO it would lead to further harm against children when the pictures were no longer enough.

Yes, this teacher crossed the line and children were harmed for him to have those pictures. We are in total agreement.

It was just making me think about fanatsies and the nature of the internet. I wonder if - say 50/60 years ago - people who had these same types of fantasies just kept them to themselves and their own imaginations because the chances of finding others who shared these fantasies was a long shot. In other words, they were hard fanatsies to feed from outside sources.

Now - with a worldful of people and kinks at your fingtertips, it's much easier to follow your fantasies towards material that would feed it. I mean the internet is a huge reason that kiddie porn has become so widespread and accessible.

Like I said - just thinking out loud here - I'm not blaming the internet for this man's actions - not at all. But I do wonder if the accessibility of prurient material causes more people to act out on unacceptable and harmful fantasies.

I think that is a very real consequence of the internet. Pervs and freaks find each other and feed off each other. The pedophile begins to feel that his/her desires are normal and the rest of us just don't understand. JMO.

Great point. Of course the point could also be argued that now they can have their fanatsies more fulfilled by sharing material with each other, but BEFORE the internet, when material was so difficult to come by, they might have offended more because living children were the only fantasy material in their grasps.

I don't think that is the case..

I am guessing that before the internet the sicko's just went straight for their target.
If you think about it people of like mindedness tend to find each other even before the days of the internet. I am thinking here of other groups that would have been more shunned in previous times. Even though it is not illegal or in anyway anything that equates to this topic .. Gays managed to find each other. (No offense to anyone but I mean this as an example of how those with like minded views find each other rather then an implication that gays and pedophiles are in anyway alike)

It should also be noted that before the internet such cases were not as widely known about or discussed openly. Child predators had a lot of protection because it was a topic people did not talk about often.
Child protection laws have greatly increased in the last 15 years.
Not that long ago and probably even sometimes today fathers who molested their children are permitted to move right back into the family home and no charges filed.

I think that those who seek to find ways to fufill their fantasies will (and would) do so with or without the internet.
The internet just makes it easier for the rest of us to be aware of how many sicko's are out there and also makes it easier for the police to locate them.

I don't know how many of you have talked this topic with friends and family but I know that among my friends growing up there was an astounding number of them that were molested by someone...
These numbers of molesters and pedophiles we are currently seeing in my mind are more reflective of all of those I knew growing up who had been molested. (those molestors in all but one case, simply got away with it)
I look at this increase as a positive sign that they are now finally being caught and prosecuted and maybe our generation of children and theirs will grow up in a safer world.
