NY NY - Patricia Laemmerhirt, 27, Westfield, 3 Apr 1976

Police say the remains of the first body appear to be female, and the body has been taken to the Mercyhurst Anthropology Lab in Erie for analysis.

During a search of the area, police discovered a second body, which was also taken to Mercyhurst for further analysis.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the FBI, Lakewood-Busti PD, Mercyhurst, and Emergency Services in the investigation.

Brother of woman missing from Chautauqua County for 45 years waiting for answers after remains found in Portland | News 4 Buffalo

PORTLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) — Albert Sam has gone without answers for 45 years. When his sister disappeared, he was left with a lot of questions. So after the remains of two people were found in the Chautauqua County Town of Portland earlier this week, the emotions flooded through him.

“Heartbroken. Excitement. Scared. Crying. What do you do?” Sam said.

Patricia Laemmerhirt went missing from the Westfield community in 1976. Just about 10 miles away on Sunday, Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies responded to a remote walking trail after receiving a report that a skull was found. An excavation revealed a skeleton believed to be that of a female.

“I’m hoping, but hoping not,” Sam admitted. “If it’s her, I’m happy because we can put her to rest. We can give her a proper burial.”

If the remains are Patricia, I wonder if she was there by the trail the entire time? :(
The Dunkirk Observer reported that the sheriff said one of the bodies had been moved but didn't say which one. Also, said BOTH bodies were in shallow graves. So, if reporting is correct, evidence may be preserved to a point.

UPDATE: Remains Found Of Missing Buffalo Woman; First Set Not Identified

MAYVILLE — Remains found last week in the town of Portland have been confirmed to be that of a missing Buffalo woman, 50-year-old Marquita Mull, Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone said Thursday. The first set of remains have yet to be identified, though Quattrone said during a press conference in Mayville that they are not of Lori Ceci Bova or Corrie Anderson, both reported missing from Chautauqua County.

Mull was reported missing July 18; she was last seen alive in June. Quattrone said the Sheriff’s Office has been working with police in Buffalo and noted that due to the manner of disposal, foul play is suspected in Mull’s death

  • The discovery of human remains this week in northern Chautauqua County has given the family of Lori Ceci Bova hope that the next step toward closure might finally be near — and if not for them then another family.
  • A hiker came across human remains Sunday evening just off a trail on Woleben Road in the town of Portland.
  • ...the first set of remains were likely there for a while, possibly decades,
  • Then on Monday, another set of remains were discovered by Chautauqua County sheriff’s deputies and later confirmed to be human. [snip]
  • three open missing person cases involving women in Chautauqua County: Bova, Corrie Anderson and the 27-year-old Patricia M. Laemmerhirt,
  • The skeletal remains found this week are currently being analyzed by forensic experts in Erie, Pa., for possible identification.

The two shallow graves in close proximity to one another suggest a serial killer, and the known victim, Marquita Mull, disappeared in 2021.

It seems unlikely that a killer would bury two bodies in the same location 45 years apart. Not many serial killers are active for that long.

For that reason, I doubt that the unidentified remains belong tp Patricia Laemmerhirt.

It's possible that two different killers just happened to select the same disposal location, but that seems pretty unlikely.

I think that the remains will turn out to be someone who disappeared more recently, probably within the past twenty years—possibly someone from Buffalo (like Marquita).

Although it's a big coincidence, it appears LE do not believe both deaths are related:
The Jane Doe is likely not connected to Mull, although they are both believed to have died by homicide. The Jane Doe was buried, while no effort was made to conceal Mull. Mull vanished in June 2021, while the Jane Doe is believed to have died many decades ago.
