June 2016:

More than a dozen teenage girls from the Bronx have been reported missing over the last two years — and a City Councilman fears they may have been abducted and forced into a prostitution ring...

King listed a total of 14 girls — ranging in age from 12 through 19 — including several who have been missing since July 2014...

Six of the teens were reported missing this month alone, including two who vanished June 23.

Among the missing is Sierra Rivera, 14, who was last seen on June 26 near White Plains Road. When she went missing, it was believed she ran off with a boyfriend, according to police sources.

The NYPD refuted claims made by Councilman Andy King that 14 Bronx girls are missing -- some from as far back as 2014.

On July 1, the NYPD office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information, said nine of the girls had returned home to their families.

Two days earlier, King held a press conference during which faces of the girls - ranging from ages 12 to 19 - were held up on posters in an effort to garner awareness for the girls.

“This concerns us as a community because if the teens reported missing are not runaways, it’s a possibility they could have been abducted by a stranger – people they meet on the Internet. Young girls are grabbed and, unfortunately, human-trafficking does exist,” said King.

In a June 30 press release from King’s office, he acknowledges that three of the girls had returned home.

LE were annoyed with King for associating the names and faces of these girls with possible sex trafficking or prostitution, due to the stigma attached. It also seems that they don't update their missing persons website very often.
