Can a legal expert please explain why LE would be looking into this?

“So we’re looking into whether or not the insurance industry either denied a claim from him or didn’t help him out to the fullest extent.”
Goes to motive and juries like to hear about motive even if it doesn't have to be proven by law.

Wexler and Martin said they had suggested the book club read the manifesto of Ted Kaczynski, known as the Unabomber, as “a joke.” Mangione reviewed it on a Goodreads account, which has been widely cited on social media on Monday

The Ivy league tech graduate charged with murdering UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson in Manhattan made multiple visits to Japan earlier this year, according to those who spoke with the alleged gunman.

During one of his visits on Feb. 25, the suspect, Luigi Mangione, now 26, entered a restaurant in Tokyo where he sat at the counter, according to Obara Jun, a Japanese poker player who saw Mangione struggle with ordering in the restaurant.

More and more I’m wondering if the spinal surgery earlier this year didn’t trigger some kind of mental illness. In my understanding of the timeline, he cut himself off from family and friends shortly after that surgery.

Schizophrenia onset tends to happen to males when they are in their 20’s - the Unabomber also suffered with this condition. I’m starting to wonder what we are going to learn about LM’s mental health in the near future.
If he was treating his back pain with substances like "mushrooms' that can trigger schizophrenia like psychosis.

Wouldn't they have worn off by the first week? You don't want to get too high of dose because it can slow healing. I believe it's to control the initial inflammation and swelling. I think I got that with my knee. I think it lasted about three days.
I don't know how long he was taking steroids or if it's the same amount of time for knee surgery and back surgery. I know I took steroids for 6 weeks when I had cataract surgery. That was one eye.

Anyway, on his post he said he was better in 7 days. He also noted he was better faster than most people (because why wouldn't he be?).

“He took action against private health insurance corporations is what he did. he was a brave italian martyr. in this house, luigi mangione is a hero, end of story!” one anonymous person said in a post on X that has nearly 2 million views.
On Monday, Shapiro took issue with comments like those. It was an extraordinary moment that he tumbled into simply because Mangione was apprehended in Pennsylvania. Shapiro’s comments — pointed, impassioned and, inevitably, political — yanked the conversation unfolding on so many people’s phone screens into real life.
“We do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint,” the governor said. “In a civil society, we are all less safe when ideologues engage in vigilante justice.”
''Like the Pelosis, Nicholas Mangione had strong links to his Italian immigrant roots—something that he said fueled his business ventures. When he believed he faced discrimination at country clubs in the 1970s for being Italian, he decided to buy his own golf resort.
"People thought I needed money from the mafia to buy this place," Mangione once recalled to the Sun.''

I am completely oversimplifying this need for causation, I get that we wring our hands in the hopes that we can understand. But to quote Chris Rock: “Whatever happened to crazy? What, you can't be crazy no more? Should we eliminate crazy from the dictionary?”

"Effective Altruism."
Squishy, indeed, @al66pine . Thank you for providing a backstory!
@Parsnip Thx, but credit should go to @waldojabba (TYVM :) ).

JW's post about EA preceded mine noting Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX infamy as an example of someone who advocates EA but is actually just virtue signaling.

LM is also from similar background imo but seems oblivious to his privileged origin & circumstances. jmo

He didn’t enter a plea. It’s not time to do so yet. That’s why it’s so stupid to say that at this point in time. He just said it will be NG, without having any evidence. Guess he’s not interested in building any credibility.

ETA: better yet, just stay out of the media for the time being. Wait for the right time to make claims
BBM - Oh, he's certainly NOT staying out of the media. I've lost count of the interviews this lawyer has racked up. Those are in addition to his "news conferences" where he basically doesn't answer ANY questions. Which is a good thing- he doesn't need to be giving out any information at this point. (I can't comment on that - I'm not going to comment on that - I haven't seen any of the evidence, etc. etc.) It just appears the entire point of calling a news conference is to get his face on TV...and it certainly seems to be working.

That's the way to effect change - become the insider.

I'm thinking of a local issue what I was part of. We organized, wrote the decision makers, visited our state capital and local representatives. All to no avail, but we did finally get the change....because somebody on our side was at a dinner party with a decision maker and mentioned the issue. Bam, it was resolved.

Soooo much gets done by rubbing elbows. You don't need a violent revolution - you need to be in the room where decisions are made. Or, build your own dang room.

LM had what it takes to become an insider and build a movement that doesn't require murder.

Agreed.

A person can be crazy (at varying levels !) but still evil, cunning, and able to formulate a plan and see it through ?
LM's escape and pathetic attempts to cover his tracks shows he is fully capable of premeditation, and knows what he was doing was wrong.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore says he has lived with the "brokenness of the healthcare system" since his father died decades ago. Yet, he doesn't condone violence, like the Dec. 4 fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan.

"I also know the way we solve things is not by killing people in cold blood," Moore said Wednesday during a press conference on the Preakness Stakes. "The way we solve things is not killing people because we do not like the industry they are in or the company they represent."

"I'm glad the wheels of justice are now moving," Moore said. "We need to have justice for what happened to Brian Thompson. I would ask people to remember that because of the actions of this person, there are two teenagers in Minnesota who are growing up like I did, fatherless. And we can never forget that."

The suspect in the slaying, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, comes from a wealthy Maryland family that owns country clubs and healthcare facilities in the Baltimore area.

Thank you for sharing Gov. Moore's story !
It shows what LM stole from Brian's family.
Heartbreaking.

Every. single. link on the first page referenced Luigi. I didn't reference him in the least.

The media is handing him the best motive/plea possible, and on a silver platter.

It seems LM fell off the grid following his trips to Japan earlier this year. But what if he didn't leave Japan at all and instead rented himself a spot where he began putting his plans into motion?

Maybe it's cheaper to buy a 3D printer in Japan in order to make plastic gun components.

A Detective Misspeaking?
A little more information on July 4, 2023.
New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, may have filed an insurance claim for back pain last year.
“So we’re looking into whether or not the insurance industry either denied a claim from him or didn’t help him out to the fullest extent.” ....
snipped for focus @Tiff23fr TYVM for post w quote & link. :)

Did NYPD Chief of Detectives intend to refer to investigating the entire insurance INDUSTRY denying LM's claim? Or that UH, ONE insurance COMPANY (or another company), denied LM's claim?

Has UH denied payment on tens of hundreds or hundreds of thousands claims? Some denied w. reasonable basis? Likely. Some denied w no reasonable basis or no basis at all? Likely.

Not an ins. co. fan here, but I doubt the insurance INDUSTRY denied LM's claim.
