If there was family at bedside, it is likely the nursing staff drew up the medication into one syringe in the med room and took one bottle in at bedside to scan before administering. There is never enough room for med admin in general, let alone numerous vials at the computer in a pt's room. That is just my opinion and speculation.

I think it is awesome that someone from your family is always able to be at bedside for your Mom. It makes a difference!

$4.5M in settlements over deaths tied to doc in murder case

    June 19, 2019

"...Mount Carmel has reached settlements in seven cases to date, plus two that didn’t involve lawsuits.

“It is our hope that these settlements will bring some measure of closure and comfort to the families,” Mount Carmel said in a statement. The hospital system has also publicly apologized for the patient deaths.

The settlements range from $200,000 to $700,000. In most cases, patients’ families get two-thirds or less of the payouts from the hospital’s insurers. The rest goes to their attorneys....

$4.5 million in settlements over deaths tied to Dr. Husel in murder case

Mount Carmel has reached settlements in seven cases to date, plus two that didn't involve lawsuits.

The settlements range from $200,000 to $700,000. In most cases, patients' families get two-thirds or less of the payouts from the hospital's insurers. The rest goes to their attorneys.

The families and the lawyers aren't commenting on the settlements, citing related confidentiality agreements.

"It is our hope that these settlements will bring some measure of closure and comfort to the families," Mount Carmel said in a statement

The hospital system has asked a court to pause proceedings in the other lawsuits while Husel's criminal case is pending. Mount Carmel said it is working with families' attorneys in the civil cases "to resolve these matters fairly" outside of court.
    //cough cough bovine scatology

    The hospital's ulterior motive is:

Mount Carmel might have an interest in settling cases before Husel's potential criminal trial to avoid the risk that information exposed during such a trial would point to more liability by the hospital system — a scenario that would "add zeroes to the settlement checks," said Michael Benza, a law professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

No but I haven't tried to find it. It was on our local news. Channel 10 I believe? They disguised the guys face. Let me see if I can find it on Google

    Edited

I think I found it but this must be a shortened version of what was on TV. The TV episode went into much more about Dr Husel

I think many of these people are going to be really sorry they settled so quickly. I am surprised their attorneys advised them to settle

Details being worked out for Dr. Husel's murder trial, the largest ever in Franklin County

    July 18th 2019

"COLUMBUS, Ohio — The beleaguered Mount Carmel Health system named an interim Chief Operating Officer on Thursday. Michael Englehart will officially start his job on July 25th. One of Englehart’s biggest challenges will be the Doctor William Husel investigation where 35 patients died in his care.

Husel appeared at a pre-trial hearing Thursday afternoon dressed in a charcoal gray pin-stripe suit and light blue shirt. Husel faces 25 murder counts. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment last month and was released on a million dollars bond. Husel showed no emotion but seemed to be listening intently to the proceedings on Thursday....

Judge Michael Holbrook is working to organize the case logistics and set a schedule for the hearings and motions. The trial date has been set for April 27, 2020...."

Dr. Husel, Mount Carmel appeal judge’s denial of stay in wrongful death lawsuits (with clip)

    07/31/19

"COLUMBUS (WBNS) – Mount Carmel Health Systems and Dr. William Husel are appealing a Franklin County judge’s ruling that denied a pause being placed on pending wrongful death lawsuits while Husel’s criminal trial is pending.

In their appeals filed Wednesday, attorneys for both Dr. Husel and Mount Carmel gave noticed that they were appealing Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Karen Phipps’ July ruling that denied a stay being issued in two of the wrongful death lawsuits.

Attorneys for Mount Carmel and Husel had argued in open court and in filings that a stay was necessary because allowing both the civil cases to continue while Husel’s criminal case is still pending could compromise Husel’s right to a fair trial and would force his defense attorneys to reveal possible defense strategies.

In Phipps’ ruling, she wrote that “the factor that weighs most strongly against a stay is that its length would be of such significant duration as to be unfairly prejudicial. Plaintiff has an interest in proceeding expeditiously while the criminal case could take years to resolve when factoring in the appellate process. Memories fade with the passage of time and missing witnesses becomes more of a possibility. A stay could place this civil proceeding in limbo for years, and there is no guarantee that, at some future time after resolution of the criminal matter, Dr. Husel will be willing to testify.”

Phipps also noted that “there has been no showing” that allowing the wrongful death lawsuits to continue would “hinder the state’s criminal prosecution.”..."

Doctor Accused of Killing Patients Seeks Insurance Coverage (1)

    Aug. 23, 2019

"An Ohio physician accused of murdering several terminally ill patients sued his medical malpractice insurer in the Eastern District of Michigan for refusing to defend him in a criminal case.

William Husel was indicted on 25 counts of murder for allegedly ordering excessively high doses of fentanyl and other drugs for terminally ill patients at Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus, Ohio. Trinity Health Corp. and insurer Trinity Assurance Ltd. recently told Husel they won’t cover the costs of defending the criminal charges.

That’s a breach of four insurance policies Husel obtained through his employment agreement with Trinity, the physician..."

So as a doctor when you kill your patients (on purpose) that's just medical malpractice?

That's a horribly written article! Many of his patients who died were not terminally ill.

    08/26/19

"COLUMBUS (WBNS) – The family of a former patient of Dr. William Husel has settled a wrongful death lawsuit with Mount Carmel Health System for $4.65 million – the largest single payout to date since the scandal at the hospital broke earlier this year – 10 Investigates has learned.

Records obtained by 10 Investigates show that the extended family members of patient Rebecca Walls will receive more $2.6 million as part of the settlement. Attorneys representing Walls’ estate will retain $1.74 million....

“Based on the representations from Dr. Husel regarding Rebecca’s medical condition, Janet Watkins made the decision to switch her from “full code” status to “do not resuscitate” code status in the early morning hours of November 19, 2018. Dr. Husel thereafter ordered a fatal dose of medication (1,000 mcg of Fentanyl and 10 mcg of Versed by IV push) for Rebecca Walls. She died within minutes after being administered the lethal doses of medication,” according to the settlement.

To date, Mount Carmel has paid out more than $9.1 million in settlements, according to 10 Investigates’ review of information reported through attorneys and probate court records...

Husel hearing on murder case expected to address new attorneys; potential trial date

    08/27/19

"COLUMBUS (WBNS) – A hearing scheduled for Wednesday in Dr. William Husel’s murder case is expected to address a potential new legal team for Husel – attorneys Diane Menashe and Jose Baez – the latter of which gained media fame for representing Florida mother Casey Anthony and late NFL star Aaron Hernandez in their various court cases.

Menashe, who has represented several high-profile murder defendants here in Columbus, filed a motion earlier this month asking that a judge accept her and Baez as Husel’s new criminal defense attorneys.

Prior to this recent motion, attorney Richard Blake has served as Husel’s criminal defense attorney....

Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said that Wednesday’s hearing could also address a potential trial date. The trial is expected to last about 8 weeks."

Judge approves former Casey Anthony attorney joining defense team of ex-Mount Carmel Dr. William Husel

    Aug 28, 2019

"High-profile lawyer Jose Baez offered a simple answer Wednesday when asked what prompted him to join the defense team for Dr. William S. Husel, who is accused of murdering 25 hospital patients with excessive doses of painkillers.

“The man looking me in the eye and telling me he’s absolutely innocent,” Baez replied. “And I believe him.”

Baez, who gained fame by successfully defending Casey Anthony in a 2011 Florida trial on charges of murdering her daughter, received a Franklin County judge’s approval to defend Husel during a hearing Wednesday.

Common Pleas Judge Michael J. Holbrook granted a motion filed three weeks ago asking that Baez, a Florida lawyer not licensed to practice in Ohio, be permitted to join the case.

The judge also agreed to delay the trial by a month at the request of Baez and Husel’s Columbus-based attorney, Diane Menashe. The trial, originally scheduled to begin April 27, is now set for June 1, with potential jurors to report May 28-29.

Husel, 43, of Liberty Township, who is free on $1 million bond, sat between his attorneys and did not speak during the hearing....

Speaking with reporters after the hearing, Baez said he is “honored to be representing Dr. Husel. I think that there are significant facts in dispute in this case.”

He referred to the charges against Husel as “somewhat baffling.”

“I’m not going to comment on the evidence or what potential defenses will be, but I can tell you that he is absolutely, 100% innocent,” Baez said....

Because of concerns about pretrial publicity in Husel’s case and the expected length of the trial, the prosecution and defense agreed with Holbrook’s decision to summon 1,000 potential jurors.

O’Brien said he can’t recall a Franklin County case in which more than 500 potential jurors were summoned."
