CINCINNATI (AP) — An Ohio woman accused of decapitating her 3-month-old daughter had been ordered by a court to stay away from the child, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

Watkins had been forbidden to have contact with the baby after she was hospitalized for psychiatric problems, according to authorities.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said the baby had been placed in an aunt's custody and that a 5-year-old at the house Monday with other children to catch a school bus found the baby's body on a kitchen counter. Police arriving in response to a 911 call found the baby decapitated and stabbed multiple times with a large chef's knife.

Deters said the aunt apparently had let the baby's mother move in with her and the baby about a week earlier. Police found the 20-year-old mother, Deasia Watkins, in bed covered with blood, Deters said. Watkins was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated murder.

Deasia Watkins, from College Hill, Ohio, was charged with aggravated murder after she was found inside a home with her dead baby lying on a counter early on Monday.
Police said baby Janiyah was killed by 'homicidal violence', but sources told Fox19 that the child's head had been severed.
The coroner reportedly said on Tuesday that the baby suffered multiple stab wounds to the face and a fractured right arm.
The young woman's aunt Caretha White told Fox that Hamilton County family services had failed the child by allowing Deasia, who suffered from depression following the baby's birth in December, to care for her.
Hamilton County Job and Family Services (HCJFS) declined to comment when contacted by Daily Mail Online.

The child was removed from the mother and placed with a relative. Relative allowed mother to move in. Caretha White is a different relative, not the one the child was placed with. I think it's DCF policy to try and place kids with relatives first. And here is the outcome in this case.

"Although Watkins was ordered to stay away from her daughter, an aunt who received custody allowed Watkins to live with her, said Prosecutor Joe Deters."

Looks like the aunt felt sorry for the mother. Wonder how she feels now? Poor child who found the baby!

James Brown said he had been with Deasia Watkins for two years before authorities said she beheaded their 3-month-old daughter, Janiyah. Brown told WCPO Tuesday problems in their relationship started "about a month" after their baby was born. "(Watkins) just started acting different," he said.

Brown said he was at work Jan. 25 when police were called to the couple's Cheviot apartment after reports of screaming and a baby crying. There, police said they had to forcibly remove the baby from Watkins' hands when she refused to let responders conduct a medical check on the baby.

Brown's friend Chris Gulley was at the apartment at the time. "(Watkins) kept calling us the devil and stuff like that," Gulley told WCPO. "She kept saying we were sinning so much, we didn't realize we were sinning. We need to come to the light and see what God wanted us to do and all that."

In the 911 call the Aunt says something like:
"The baby is 3 month... OMG I'm going to jail."

So the Aunt knew she had done something wrong immediately. :twocents:

The knife used on the baby was found placed in the dead baby's hand, Deters said...

Those court records state Watkins had been diagnosed with post-partum psychosis, which Sammarco said is different than the more common post-partum depression... Those same documents also state Janiyah was placed in the custody of Job & Family Services on March 6 after a complaint filed by the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office Feb. 27. The complaint stated the infant was dependent and neglected...

Deters said his office is still looking into whether Watkins' aunt will face charges. "These are very difficult charges to prosecute," Deters said. "If we charge the aunt, we lose a very valuable witness."

And after seeing the baby's mutilated body, all the aunt can think about is herself??!!! She should go to jail, IMO.

I had a feeling this could be post-Partum psychosis. What a tragedy.

An Ohio mother accused of decapitating her 3-month-old daughter is in jail with bail set at $500,000...

A handcuffed Watkins didn't speak at Friday's hearing in Hamilton County Municipal Court. Judge Melissa Powers also scheduled March 26 as the date for Watkins to go before a grand jury, which would decide on any indictment. Court records don't list an attorney for Watkins, who had been hospitalized since her arrest Monday. She has since been transferred to the county jail.

A judge has ordered the 20-year-old woman charged with decapitating her baby to undergo treatment at a mental health facility after an initial evaluation showed she is not competent to stand trial.

However, DeAsia Watkins can be rehabilitated with treatment, the evaluation said, and prosecutors want her to go to trial eventually.

After Janiyah was born, Watkins was placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold at Deaconess Hospital, court records show. Watkins was diagnosed with post-partum psychosis, a condition characterized by the onset of psychotic behavior following childbirth.

Doctors prescribed Watkins an antipsychotic medication called Risperdal as treatment, but it was unclear whether she took it.

CINCINNATI — The 20-year-old mother accused of decapitating her infant daughter was found competent to stand trial Wednesday.

According to Triffon Callos with the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office, Deasia Watkins will stand trial, charged with aggravated murder in connection with the death of 3-month-old Janiyah Watkins.

According to a coroner’s report, the infant sustained multiple stab wounds to the right side of her face and head, and her “head was severed from her body."

In the days following Janiyah’s death, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters called the case “one of the most disturbing…[he’s] ever seen in [his] life.”

According to court records, Watkins was diagnosed with post-partum psychosis, a condition characterized by the onset of psychotic behavior after childbirth, shortly after Janiyah’s birth last December.

"Since her arrest, Watkins has been getting psychological evaluations every few months to determine if she's sane.
At the beginning of the investigation, she was found incompetent to stand trial, but after another test, a judge reversed the court's decision.
Judge Kubicki set a trial date of October 24. She will report to court one more time before then on June 28"

Sad, sad, sad, unbelievably sad.

Yes it is unbelievably sad. So many sad cases here. Just when I think I have heard it all and nothing will ever shock me again, I get shocked again.

Mom accused of decapitating infant daughter rejects plea deal

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/national/mom-accused-of-decapitating-infant-daughter-rejects-plea-deal

Deasia Watkins, the mom accused of decapitating her infant daughter, rejected a prosecutor's plea deal Monday morning. She is pursuing an insanity plea and wants to go to trial.

Cincinnati Police said Watkins, 21, stabbed her 3-month-old daughter Janiyah to death in March 2015. She is charged with aggravated murder, which carries a sentence of 15 years to life in prison.

If Watkins is found not guilty by reason of insanity, she would be under the court's jurisdiction for the rest of her life without a chance for parole.
