I know of a case where someone had many medical problems including seizures. It took 18 months to get Disability Social Security. I know someone that got SSI as soon as they filed because they say they can't be in a work environment with a lot of people around them. This same person was making over $17/hr about 20 years ago and quit because they didn't like the foreman telling them what to do. Good thing SSI don't tell them what to do.
So, SSI can be fairly easy to qualify for, apparently, if a person wants to apply for it.
This is what I am thinking, too. The definition of disability for SSI and SSDI are the same, but SSDI is very difficult to get, unless the disability is profound. If you have education and/or work experience in a field that isn't physical work, it's used against legitimately disabled people to deny them. I've seen it happen time and again. They have occupational specialists who tell people that with their work experience, they can get a job and it doesn't matter if the job examples they propose would put them near poverty level. They do not even consider income when doing this. Income earned from previous work comes into play in terms of monthly benefit received if approved. It can take years before some people can even get to an administrative hearing and to go in without an attorney is not advised.
A gal I know "of", has really worked the system with SSI. She also financially worked over my recently deceased elderly uncle, who had dementia. She called him "Grandpa" to endear herself to him. He was no relation to her. We were watching out for him before he went into the nursing home, and going over there on a regular basis, trying to put off the inevitable - a nursing home. She managed to slip in and she got tens of thousands of dollars out of him. He felt sorry for her and he didn't tell us he was doing this. I wanted to report her to the authorities, but other family members feared she was crazy enough to retaliate. She got away with it.
Her disability under SSI - she has social anxiety. Yet, on her facebook page, she's always planning parties for her many friends, and she's the hostess. Unbelievable. Apparently SS is not monitoring her.
