A death investigation has been initiated for remains found Friday afternoon in Glen Helen Nature Preserve, Greene County Sheriff’s Capt. Sean Magoteaux said.

People hunting for mushrooms found the remains, which appear to have been in the wooded area for some time, he said.

“The body was in very bad shape,” the captain said, noting an autopsy will have to determine whether the remains are that of a male or female.

An autopsy is to be performed Saturday at the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. The Greene County Coroner’s Office is handling the case.

The discovery off the 3400 block of Grinnell Road was reported about 3:30 p.m. The location is across from Camp Greene at Glen Helen Nature Preserve.

Leonid Clark, 26, reportedly missing since January, was last seen in Yellow Springs on or about Jan. 13, Yellow Springs police said in February.

Buckeye Search & Rescue dogs were used in February in a search of “the area of Glen Helen Nature Preserve as this is a place Mr. Clark was known to frequent,” according to a statement issued by the department.

Clark was classified as a missing person Feb. 6 when he failed to make a court appearance in Missouri.

“It’s too early to determine anything,” Capt. Magoteaux said. “It’s just a death investigation at this point.”

We will update this developing report as we learn more.

Yellow Springs chief: ‘Body was dumped’ and carried ‘downstream’

“The body had wounds to it which would indicate to us that those wounds were from a second party,” Fischer said. “We’re going now from looking for a missing person to investigating a crime.”

“We believe that the body was dumped east of where it was found and high waters from earlier this year carried that body downstream,” Fischer said. “It was snagged on some debris along side the river.”

Investigators are reviewing reports from the Dec. 13, 2018, death of Kenneth Livingston, who died from a gunshot wound to the head at an apartment on Corry Street in Yellow Springs. Clark struggled emotionally in the weeks following Livingston’s death because he helped clean up the scene at the apartment, according to his family.

Death of Yellow Springs man being investigated as homicide

Carlson said there were signs, though, that Clark seemed troubled long before the cleanup in December.

"We saw him change in behavior around mid-October. He was on our radar and actually staying at the police department in the lobby some," he said.
