OR OR - David 'Dave' Lewis, 46, Ashland, 4 September 2008

Amidst holiday ads, on page 51 of the December 2019 Ashland edition of the “Sneak Preview” is a notice titled “Who killed Dave Lewis?” This ad has been published before over the years and still offers a $20,000 reward leading to an arrest and a $5000 reward for any pertinent information. It also names local people associated with Dave. The website listed in the ad (and that has been posted here previously) is no longer active.

It’s hard to believe it’s been over 11 years, but it’s not the only unsolved murder in the general area...Troy Carney, David Grubbs, Stephanie Warner and Garren Beller come to mind. There are more. And that means that there are families still missing their loved ones and waiting for answers.

Unsolved So. Oregon: From the Ashes - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

A story by local TV station KOBI sort of tries to link the murders Of Dave Lewis and Troy Carney, but also sort of not. Confusing story, but at least they’re not forgotten. Video is worth watching. I’m intrigued by the first words of the story...

“In this case we have some strong persons of interest. But we just don’t have enough to make a strong criminal case,” said Cpt. Tim Snaith, Jackson Co. Sheriff’s Office.

The story also says...

Did the same person start a fire at Lewis’s home and the cabin down the road? Did that person also kill Lewis and Carney using a fire to cover up evidence?

“Only the suspect or eyewitness will have those pieces of information,” said Moran.

Trying to connect the dots today, Moran says, is a fruitless effort. But they’ll never give up hope that one day, someone will come forward.

We won’t give up hope or forget your brother, L.

Dave's x-wife Josee Fournier-Hugo & her BFF wrote this: The Obituary - - - Not the Last Word.

JUSTICE 4 DAVID E. LEWIS
OBITUARY - -

David Edwin Lewis
Dec. 23, 1961-Sept. 4, 2008
David was born and raised in Wilmington, Del., and after journeying across the country, he settled in Ashland, Ore. Here, he met the "love of his life", Josee Fournier. They moved to the summit of the "Indian" where they were blessed with three beautiful sons. Dave shared his life with his boys and passed on his passion for the mountains. Dave made everything fun: ice fishing, snowshoeing, riding snowmobiles, dog-sledding, adventuring on motorcycles, all while teaching his sons survival skills and respect for the land.
Dave was also an avid sports fan who instilled the "love of the game" in his sons. He nurtured and encouraged their natural athleticism by tossing footballs and baseballs, even playing ice hockey in the winter. He remained loyal to his "team," the Philadelphia Eagles, through winning and losing.
As time went by, life took many twists and turns. Seasons came and went, his boys turned into young men, and all the while, Dave took pleasure in the watching. He spent his time enjoying simple things and finding beauty everywhere. Dave was an artist by nature, and a man with a unique vision who could make art with every little "treasure" he found: old scrap metal, leather, rocks, wire, string or even chain saw chains, anything worked!
A "good man in any camp," Dave was an animated storyteller with a keen wit and sense of humor. He lived from the depths of his being, stood up for the things in which he believed and shared himself and all he had with the family and friends he cherished.
A "Jack-of-all-trades" and wildland firefighter, David worked hard and played hard. He was intense and unforgettable, a rascal and a live wire. He was a sweet, sweet man who will be greatly missed. Life will go on without Dave, but the ride won't be as much fun.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Vivian Lewis; and survived by his three sons, Beau, Casey, and Skyler Lewis; and by his three siblings, James, Paige, and Linda Lewis.
There will be a memorial gathering at noon on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008, at the Summit of the Indian."

I’m afraid I missed the last two years @Sleuth2010, but thank you. The pandemic sort of messed with time, at least for me. Thank you for all the posts this week. I hadn’t seen Dave’s obituary. Dave’s ex used to cut my hair. I’m not sure if you’re saying she wrote the obituary, but whoever wrote it did a nice job describing Dave so readers would know what his murderer stole from his family and the community.

I can’t believe it’s been over 14 years for both Dave and Troy with no progress toward justice. I get that they can’t arrest anyone if they don’t have quite enough evidence to bring the case to trial successfully. But it’s frustrating nonetheless.

DOUBLE HOMICIDE COLD CASE(s) 14 YEARS ++++

Troy Carney and David Lewis (birthday born 12/23/61) would have been 61, murdered at age 45. Prime of his life.

" In 2010, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department released a statement which says that “through the course of the investigation, an evidentiary link between the two homicides was discovered.” They have not released any information and there is no new information available on either case.

In June 2012, “Fishhook Dave’s” memorial stone was placed against the edge of the bike path along the Greenway and Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland. Standing next to it, one notices the growing birch tree nearby and a spectacular view of the rolling hills off in the distance. The face of a wolf and an eagle’s feather envelopes the words “Beloved son, brother, father, and friend David Edwin Lewis, Aged 46, Born December 23 Wilmington Delaware, Killed September 4, 2008 Dead Indian Road, Ashland Oregon. The most loving man on the mountain. He said it the way it was and it was the way he said.” There is an uneasiness there at the edge of the cemetery where the red winged blackbirds come to rest on the top of the fence, on what should be a sacred and peaceful place, as the community still waits for answers.

Two killings, two arsons, same day, same killer?
By Kimberly A.C. Wilson, The Oregonian
September 23, 2009, 9:40AM
Here's what else the two killings on the same day last year have in common: a middle-aged male victim, remote locations in southern Oregon, and crime scenes marred by fire. The similarities in the deaths of David E. Lewis and Troy Dean Carney persuaded detectives the murders are linked, says today's Medford Mail Tribune. "We find two men killed by... Full story »
PLEASE help to solve this case... could the FBI experts from Idaho-4, the heinous horrible murder of four students, come to Southern Oregon and guide the resolution // arrests of these cases. Rewards are offered. Any tips...

Thank you Lilbet for years of faith in arrests to be made. These cases maybe need an arson specialist...although Troy had a cell phone and there was no body burning. David was burned to 40 pounds, in his home. <modsnip> detectives (outside Oregon) may be best to take a cold-case look at these 2 -linked murders. We would be forever thankful. These are senseless crimes and we have never lost-faith that this complex/simple case will be solved. High-tech, quality evidence is strong. Thank God for the arrests in Idaho. Thank goodness for TRUE BIG LAW JUSTICE !!! Believe in the good. WOJ -

A big thank you for this...

"It's an ongoing investigation. It's a giant puzzle we're trying. We've talked to hundreds if not dozens since we investigated," said Woodrow Pollock, one of several Sheriff's Investigators with the Cold Case Unit.

Pollock is trying to find out who killed 46-year-old Dave Lewis that day near Hyatt Lake.

"It's unusual that we can't get more people to comment of Dave Lewis' death."

Pollock said since Lewis' death they've had no suspects, but they do know someone burned down his house and another cabin nearby minutes later.

"We're still no closer to solving this case. One of the biggest problems in this case is forensic evidence."

Many have looked for what that ' connection ' could be between Troy Carney and Dave Lewis' deaths, but have not discovered that connection.

There are many news articles about Dave Lewis murder. There are not quite as many about Troy's murder.

Interestingly enough, yesterday, another house in the 12600 address on Dead Indian Memorial Road burned to the ground. <modsnip: broken link>

Investigators are looking into a blaze that leveled a two-story house on Dead Indian Memorial Road east of Ashland early Saturday afternoon.
IMO: Connection could be the bullets. David's manner of death has never been disclosed publicly.

David Edwin Lewis (12/23/61-9/4/08 MHRIP) has been gone more than 14 years now. No resolve to his case. Does anyone have the police report from 9/4/08, a coroner's report or the dna report from TX? I'm a local, and I'm going to be going back over some things, including possible routes to and from the scenes (including Troy Carney's campsite)

David lived in a very rural area, approximately 13 miles up Dead Indian Memorial Road, at the summit. His driveway was almost directly across from Buck Prairie Road, the steep dirt driveway had a locked gate at the bottom. Shale City Road came out just to the northeast of the property he had lived on for 20 years. David liked to fish, and hang out at Hyatt Lake, which wasn't far from his home, The Hyatt Prairie road went to both Hyatt Lake & Howard Prairie Lake. David worked at one time for the owner of the Hyatt Lake Resort.

Per a Jackson County Sheriff detective, this case is still an open investigation, so no reports are available to the public at this time.

MOO-- IF David's case and Troy's case are related, and the gun is a common factor... could the killer have been camping or staying in a vehicle near the Pilot Truck Stop in Central Point, where Troy would have been a witness to them being in the area?

MOO-- Could the person have killed Troy on 9/3/08 after he fell asleep and then drove a back way to confront David at either Hyatt Lake bar or at his cabin, killing him, setting his cabin on fire, then on their way back to the backroad, stopping to set the vacant cabin on fire?

Earlier reports said although the second location-the vacation cabin was the first of the two fires reported, it was actually the second fire set that night, approximately 5 miles from David's cabin and plainly visible to passersby.

MOO-- Possible route that night- Pilot Truck Stop-Central Point Oregon >> Hwy 62- Crater Lake Hwy >> Hwy 140 >> Big Elk Road >> Dead Indian Memorial

FACT:
9/14/08 AM-- Troy's campsite and scene of his murder was set ablaze
9/14/08 NOON-- David's memorial was held at the site of his burned out cabin and the meadow below
