Found Deceased OR - Joshua McCoy, 5, Autism, goes by "Josh" or "Joshie", may not respond, missing when mom woke up frm nap at 5:30pm, Stage Rd, Hauser, 10 Nov 2024

Wow. Turnout was much larger than I thought. The handed out stickers with Joshie's favorite saying when he saw a jeep that say "Jeep, let's go! Jeep, let's go!", then they did a motorcycle and jeep run. A motorcycle group, called BACA (Biker's Against Child Abuse) was there as well. :)

Over 200 people attended a candlelight vigil on Saturday in Hauser.

Another short video clip of the vigil.

Also, the newscaster said "the FBI says it's continuing to examine evidence in the case in partnership with local law enforcement". I wonder what kind of evidence they have? I'm thinking perhaps something that was found out in the woods which might have been why LE didn't want a lot of well-meaning volunteers tromping all over the place. JMO on that. :)

Uncle of 5-year-old boy found dead in southern Oregon thanks community for support of family

“Last week, the sheriff's office said the cause of death remains unknown, nobody has been taken into custody, and the investigation is ongoing.”
BBM

This wording makes me think that the situation looked suspicious or there is a possibility foul play is suspected. Though it could be that LE is just being thorough. How many cases of missing children on here have started out with an adult reporting that they woke up to discover a child missing, and then it turned out to be something else entirely? Not that that scenario couldn’t legitimately happen, but…

MOO

Was this quote from a press conference? Maybe he was answering direct questions about if anyone was in custody or if the investigation had concluded? jmo

I see that BACA and other MCs were present, I love the biker community. Same with the Jeep community. BACA in particular is a group that does amazing charitable work MOO. I am so glad the rain didn't deter people from coming out to the vigil.

from the article:

The investigation into Joshua's death is ongoing. Detectives are waiting on autopsy results.
Hundreds attend Joshua McCoy's candlelight vigil

How long does it typically take for an autopsy report? I assume one would not be issued until tox screens had come back and such.

This silence troubles me.

Autopsies take time. LE waiting on the autopsy makes me think they have no evidence of foul play.

An autopsy was completed on the boy by the Oregon State Medical Examiners Office, Gill said. His official cause and manner of death were pending Thursday.
5-year-old boy who went missing while parent was napping is found dead near Oregon home, officials say

The autopsy has been completed. I believe the hold up is the preparing of the report which is probably held up waiting on the toxicology. JMO Maybe it is dotting i s and crossing t s. Entirely possible. But we don't know what we don't know and currently all we know is a child was reported missing and was found dead days later a couple of miles from home through dense woods.

I have been racking my brain trying to figure out just where Joshie was found because 1.6 miles NW, and almost 2 miles by road, makes no sense to me in relation to where Joshie's lived. (I found his address on Stage Rd after I saw the mother's name in the article at the bottom of this post.)

It doesn't make sense to me because 1.6 miles NW of his home crosses Hwy 101 and Clear Lake. Plus, there's no roads going that way (NWerly) so that's never made any sense to me.

It's making me wonder if some reporting got it wrong and it was actually NE, not NW. Now THAT I can make sense of. Also, I've seen a bunch of reporting that doesn't say what direction, just "1.6 miles from home". Due to that NE from his home makes a lot more sense to me.

This is 1.6 miles NW as the crow flies from Joshie's home which is hard for me to make sense of:

Now, 1.6 miles NE of Joshie's home is another matter. 1.6 miles NW coincides perfectly with "About 2 miles by road. See that SS for '~2 miles by road' below this 'as the crow flies' SS:

~2 miles by road:

Look where ~2 miles by road, AND 1.6 miles NE in a straight line take you. About the same place. Hence me thinking this is likely the spot where Joshie ended up:

ETA - In that general vicinity, not that exact spot. There's no way I could figure that out as I don't know how far off the road he was found, or exactly what line NE to draw.

All the above map images are from Google maps which I've linked HERE (Joshie's house and starting point) in the event you want a closer look and/or play around with the map.

Details below supporting my theory of where Joshie might have been found.

McCoy was discovered deceased and found approximately 1.6 miles straight-line distance northwest from the child’s residence, and almost two miles by road, police said. SOURCE
and...
Officials say Joshua was found dead on Tuesday around 12:30 p.m., approximately 1.6 miles from his home. SOURCE

Mother's name mentioned in this article which is how I found Joshie's address from where he went missing so I could map it out:

thank you for these excellent maps illustrating the 1.6 straight-line from the home versus 2 mile by road. I just cannot see him being found NW as described because that would mean he had to cross highway 101. Not to mention once across highway 101, he would no longer be in dense woods but close to the ocean, where the brush thins out and there is sand and a big lake?? None of which would necessitate "carrying him down the mountain". JMO

I suspect you may be right and he was found 1.6 miles NE of his home.

I concur it has to be NE. You can't head NW by road without going all the way south to Saunders Lake. Footage of where he was found shows a winding road I don't see where that would be 1.6 miles to the NW. There appears to be a utility corridor with power lines heading NE. Stage Rd crosses it more than once.

I thought I'd post what the Oregon Health Authority has to say about the Confidentiality and Laws about the death of a child. This might be why things have been pretty quiet on that front.

Confidentiality is essential to the child death review process. Information about the deceased child and their family, as well as information about service providers involved with the family is to be shared only in the context of the review process at the county and state levels.

Prior to child death review, participating team members and guests must agree not to disclose information from the review process, including information shared in preparation for the reviews, during the reviews and at sub-group meetings. Sample confidentiality agreements for team members and guests are available in the toolkit.

Confidentiality laws and rules, such as those summarized below, were enacted to protect individuals from unwarranted invasions of their privacy and protect the interests of society.

Great find. Thanks for posting

I was googling for news on this case as I do each morning and found this article from November 12. It contains no new info. But the headline struck me because I hadn't noticed it before. I find it reassuring that I am not alone in thinking there may be more to this case than a simple elopement.

Thanks for posting this Gemmie. While we at WS usually like to know and discuss every detail, I much appreciate Oregon looking at it this way. I've recently read some material about how Canada releases much less info in missing cases to help reduce fallout for the person or loved ones moving forward in life.

I think it's a great idea and more should do it this way. It'll keep the trolls away from attacking and stalking innocent people in their grief. I can't imagine anything worse than being stalked and attacked while grieving a loved one that you're innocent of killing.
