Amos who is a retired disabled Airforce veteran and father of four older children says officer Justin Gray, a fellow veteran and father told him he wasn't leaving the mountain until he got his son.

"Officer Gray's my hero. He's the man who carried my son from the forest. I love him so much."
Father mourns young son found dead in Oregon

I feel for Amos. Had to be so hard when he was several states away and learned his baby boy was missing. I can't imagine what a helpless feeling that was. He claims Josh, despite being on the spectrum, was super smart, could read and type, and had been taught from a very young age to go nowhere near the pond and not to wander.

The telephone call in the video of the reporter and Amos McCoy, the dad, was a heartbreaker. He was crying. So sad.

Joshua’s father lives in Ohio:

"The FBI came and took me in and talked to me...I freely gave my phone information and mouth swabs because I'm innocent...I'm a victim."
That poor father :(

Obviously we have no idea about the dynamics of the relationship between Josh's parents but it speaks volumes that Mom never notified Dad of his being missing, but rather the FBI informed him. Keeping in mind that grief can wear many hats, the word Justice doesn't apply to accidental deaths usually. He told us more about Josh in one interview than we got the whole time he was missing. My heart breaks for him.

Me too and from the interview it sounds like he was around until somewhat recently if he lived with mom 4.5 yrs and Josh was only 5- and he knew what his son was capable of and called him smart and obviously loved him- that’s so tragic-

I feel so bad for that father and extended family

EBM to add link

IMO that cell phone is the key to solving what happened to this lad.
-Is it Joshie’s phone? Or whose cell phone is it?
-If it is Joshie’s, what features did he know how to use?
-Could the phone have actually had service, had it not been on airplane mode?
-Did Josh know what airplane mode is? Why indeed was the phone on airplane mode?
-Also, how did they KNOW the child had a cell phone with him?

IMO that phone is being pored over night and day right now as they look for more answers.

MOO but the phone is key in this tragedy.

Same here Gemmie. I was actually reading about the phone they pinged but couldn't locate him because it was in airplane mode, and I had the thought that perhaps he was playing something like Pokemon Go on the phone and wandered off in search of Pokemon.

MOO but the phone is critical.
Do we assume the phone was recovered? Do we know?

Maybe if it was on the house WiFi and he/the phone left the house and signal was lost could explain the ping- but if was something like that and the device needed WiFi to work the child would likely stay near the house or return when signal was lost - moo

Do we assume the phone was recovered? Dodnt the grandma say it was in airplane mode before they found him? Do we know?
We only know what I included and what was reported — that he was reported to have had a cell phone with him, and that the phone ping didn’t help because it was apparently in airplane mode.
I think those are two pretty wild pieces of information of which to be certain when a 5 year-old wanders away from home.

We also know that he had ASD and it was stated that he may not answer if searchers called out for him by name.

EBM for clarity.

Agreed- my kids had old devices from a young age to play games take pictures and we kept them in airplane mode on WiFi and they didn’t have SIM cards anymore- so not sure of their capacity to ping - but some phones can still call 911 even if no active plan- so I don’t know if they found the phone or not or if it was “always” in airplane mode and just somehow happened to ping a tower maybe if it was shut off or something- I don’t know- moo- but it is oddly specific for a missing 5 yr old - moo

I can find nothing in MSM to support the phone having been found. I also cannot find an article saying the phone was in airplane mode. Just that LE tried to ping it and that attempt yielded nothing useful or "fruitful". I think we are speculating it may have been in airplane mode. but we do not know that to be true JMO

I have seen zero mention of the phone since Joshua was found so no clue if he even had it on him when he went missing or if it was recovered with his body.

ETA found MSM reference to airplane mode so linking and editing to correct my post.

Authorities got a ping from the cell phone Joshua was carrying, but Amos says they could not find him because it was on airplane mode.

This article mentions that they “got a ping” but couldn’t be tracked due to airplane mode

Authorities got a ping from the cell phone Joshua was carrying, but Amos says they could not find him because it was on airplane mode” from the above article

Not seeing anything about the phone being recovered

It's from this article: "Authorities got a ping from the cellphone Joshua was carrying, but Amos says they could not find him because it was in airplane mode"

ETA,: I have not seen anything about whether or not the cell phone was retrieved, as you said.
