Circumstances of Recovery A skull and mandible were found in the personal possessions of a deceased individual. Associates of the individual remember seeing the skull on the deceased man's desk, thinking it was fake. The skull and mandible were determined to be real skeletal material, and an antemortem filling can be observed in one of the mandibular molars, thus making this a contemporary case. The skeletal remains were turned over to law enforcement.
Details of Recovery
Condition of Remains Not recognizable - Partial skeletal parts only

So, the PMI on 20 years could be the number of years people observed the skull on the desk, right? There certainly isn't a lack of missing girls in the Pacific Northwest before the 2000s :(

Reminds me of the chiropractor's bones, or Colorado cauldron Doe (what's up with all these people dragging random skulls home without contacting LE?).

Interesting case.

Assuming the victim was from the Roseburg area it might be Debra Vanluven a 40 year old who went missing in 1997. However the prime suspect in Vanluven's case is her live in boyfriend Michael Braae, a suspected serial killer. I'm assuming if the remains were found in Braae's posession the police would've already connected the dots by now. Still it's worth considering.

37 year old Victoria Soderberg went missing from nearby Grants Pass in 2002. It appears that prior to her death she was involved in some sort of illegal activities as the photo on her NAMUS profile is from a booking the year before. The information on her case is scant so I have no idea what she was booked for. This could be her.

Katrina Sweaney was also from Grants Pass but her case has more information. She was a married mother of three who was involved in drugs at the time of her disappearance. Maybe this is her.

I think we need a little more information to speculate but I think these three are good places to start.

Yeah, I would really love to know more about the guy who had it on his desk. Was he a former physician or mortician or something like that? Or was he a creepy serial killer who did nefarious deeds in his basement office and other creepy guys sometimes did creepy business with down there? Or maybe just one of those weird (and likely not-so-bright) people like the ones @Mrs. Badcrumble mentioned above?

With the man gone, we might not know how the skull came into his possession, making the recovery of additional bones and the identification process harder. Are there any ruleouts?

Imagine when these people are identified and their loved ones learn that they've been mere props for some morbid weirdo... oof. Even more heartbreaking if they weren't handed over to LE when discovered and ended up seriously delaying the process of identifying the UID and solving the case (perhaps catching the perp if it was a crime). Then there's the whole case of a crime scene and the disturbing of such, causing critical evidence to be lost.. another oof.

20 years could also be related to the kind of filling they identified in the tooth. There was a lot of evolution in dentistry between the early 80s and mid 2000s with all different kinds of composites - if the person had a specific kind of composite that was only briefly utilized, that could have narrowed down the PMI scope a lot.

Another possibility is Barbara Joy Gallagher from Douglas County Oregon..missing for over 20 years.. boyfriend ( who killed his wife and then himself years later) was the suspected killer. Barbara's body was never found, she resided in Azalea at the time of her disappearance, left a teen son motherless.

Some updates to Jane Doe's NamUs page:

Circumstances of recovery simply says
A skull and mandible were found in the personal possessions of a deceased individual. The skeletal remains were turned over to law enforcement.

and there's one exclusion:

Snipped.

My mind is blown that this young woman is 25 and has 3 kids....

******

LE has the lower jaw of this UID, as I understand? The lower jaw shape could be key to identifying her. The 3 women in @b741ma 's post all have distinctive jawlines.

I wonder if the "deceased individual" had lived anywhere except Roseburg, or was a mushroom picker, logger, angler... something that might tell us WHERE/HOW he got the skull.
