Found Deceased OR - Terry Smith, 67, & Sharon Smith, 65, Grant Co, 17 Jul 2018

There's been an arrest!

"Isaac Connery, 23, was arrested in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, June 26, according to a July 8 press release from the Grant County sheriff and district attorney. Connery is accused of shooting Terry and Sharon Smith July 17, 2018, and setting fire to their home on Nans Rock Road in the Laycock Creek area between Mt. Vernon and John Day, according to the release."

The Smiths knew Connery and were extremely generous to him and his mother in the past. SMH. Two kind, generous people killed by a monster.

Wow. Am anxious to learn what set these people off and why Sharon felt uncomfortable with them visiting their home. Sharon's sister must have known all along who may have been responsible for her sister and brother in law's death. What uncanny timing that the man helping with the Smith's property just happened to be gone at the time. Or, was that all a ruse to make the perp feel that the police had no idea who had set fire to the house?

It sounds to me that the pickup truck was immediately recorded at the campground in Boise. Campgrounds do tend to make a record of all vehicles entering or exiting but it may have taken some time for that record to become connected to the case and/or the suspects may have been allowed a certain amount of freedom while being surveiled to more credibly implicate themselves. That happens a lot.

As far as what set them off, I'm sure it was the Smiths' distancing themselves. Philanthropy can be very rewarding and beneficial to one's community but some small percentage of people will take advantage all the way to the point of feeling entitled to that help. If it's allowed to go too far, it can become quite delicate to extricate.

The interviewing officer failed to make sure C understood his Miranda rights and continued to question him after he had requested legal council two separate times. Pretty cut and dry under OR law. MOO Extremely disappointing that the officer was negligent in their duties and either didn't know the law, or simply disregarded it.

The state has dismissed the murder and arson cases without prejudice to avoid attaching jeopardy, but continues to investigate in the hopes of finding enough evidence to move forward without relying on the interview as evidence. At this time all other admissible evidence is circumstantial. The investigation will continue, they know who did it and how, so here's to hoping other evidence will come to light that will allow the state to proceed. There is no statute of limitation for murder or conspiracy to commit murder in Oregon. At least they had not moved forward to a point where double jeopardy would be in play, so there is always the chance they could be brought to a fair trial in the future.

This is truly so frustrating and heartbreaking on all levels. Hopefully one day the guilty parties can be held accountable and not continue to walk free from this horrible act.
