Oregon woman murdered by 'Happy Face Killer' identified in 30-year cold case

SALEM, Ore. – After nearly 30 years, California authorities have identified an Oregon woman killed by the "Happy Face Killer."

On June 3, 1993, Patricia Skiple's body was found by a truck driver who stopped on the side of California State Route 152 in unincorporated Gilroy, about a half hour south of San Jose. The woman was dressed in blue denim when she was found by detectives from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. An autopsy classified her death as "undetermined," and with no leads on her identity, authorities referred to her as "Blue Pacheco."

Detectives resurfaced the case a few years ago to follow up on leads. With the help of DNA Doe Project, a nonprofit organization that provides investigative genetic genealogy services to identify "John and Jane Does," they were able to uncover Skiple's identity last week and confirm the identity of her killer, Keith Hunter Jesperson.

One of his victims found on 8/30/92 I believe could be Jennifer Joyce Downs who went missing on 5/14/91 I notified NAMUS about it and riverside county SO but still don’t know if she was excluded.

Glad to see her ID'd but I don't think she's the "last unknown victim of the Happy Face Killer". There's another victim of Keith Jesperson who, afaik, is still unidentified. Possible name Claudia.

Then, in March 2023, Othram, a genetic genealogy company working with the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System produced leads in the case. These leads finally restored the name and identity of Jesperson’s sixth victim: Suzanne Kjellenberg.

When Kjellenberg was identified, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference on Oct 3, 2023. Othram’s law enforcement liaison, David Nutting described the conventional DNA analysis that their team used to identify Kjellenberg

“Othram will develop a profile from the remains and submit that into genealogy databases, and we have a team of nearly a dozen forensic genetic genealogists on staff who work through publicly available databases to search to find relatives, and once we narrow it down through those databases, we’re able to provide leads to law enforcement,” Nutting said.

Nutting shared that 102 cases have been resolved this year alone using this technology, regardless of how little DNA was available. However, despite these hopeful forensic advancements, 14,000 unidentified human remains still exist today in the United States.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Authorities in Southern California are continuing to ask for help to identify the last unidentified victim in the "Happy Face Killer" case, who could have ties to Las Vegas.

The Riverside County District Attorney's Office says recent advances in DNA technology have brought them closer to identifying the last unidentified victim of serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson.

Over the years, investigators were able to find the victim’s biological father from Cameron County, Texas, who is now dead. Authorities suspect her maternal side of the family has ties to the Louisiana and/or southeast Texas area.

“We are hopeful someone hearing any of these details may remember anything that could help us reunite this woman with the family who may have been looking for her for over three decades,” said District Attorney Mike Hestrin.

This is blowing up all over the news suddenly. Good.

I’m researching the Fathers possible ties to Santa Maria which is in Santa Barbara county. Santa Maria is 15 minutes away from me. If anyone is searching for him in other areas and would like to compare notes feel free to respond or messsge me. I hope she gets her name back.

The Riverside County District Attorney's Office is seeking nationwide assistance in identifying the final unidentified victim of Keith Hunter Jesperson, also known as the Happy Face Killer. Jesperson was convicted of murder in Riverside County 14 years ago.

Recent advances in DNA technology have allowed cold case investigators in Riverside County to come the closest they’ve ever been to identifying the only remaining unidentified victim of serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, known as the “Happy Face Killer.”

On the anniversary of his conviction for that murder, the Riverside County Regional Cold Case Homicide Team, led by investigators from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, is seeking help around the world in putting a name to the woman’s face.

The woman’s body was found on Aug. 30, 1992 along Highway 95, approximately seven miles north of the city of Blythe, California. After his arrest in another case, Jesperson confessed to a news reporter in Portland, Oregon, and later to Riverside County Sheriff’s Office deputies, that he killed her and seven other women.

It is really unfortunate that this killer wasn't sentenced to death and executed a long time ago.
