Circumstances of Disappearance


Andrea Coyle left her residence in Bellwood, PA for the Woodrow Wilson School, an adult learning school in Altoona, PA, on December 19, 1978 at 08.00. She apparently left the school prior to 12.00 and has not been seen or heard from since.


Coyle was in the U.S Army from September 2, 1974 to February 28, 1975. Coyle was being treated on a voluntary basis, at the mental health wing of the Altoona Hospital, at the time of her disappearance.


She had left home on a prior occasion, and was located in Washington D.C. after she was arrested. After her arrest she was admitted to St. Elizabeth Hospital, in D.C., by court order. She stayed there from August to October 1976.


She would often hitchhike with truck drivers. She may be traveling throughout the Eastern part of U.S.

Thirty years ago today, the then-30-year-old Woodrow Wilson Adult Learning School student disappeared from Altoona and hasn't been heard from since.

Bringing attention to the case may lead to a break for local police and closure for the family.

Andrea Coyle, who also was known by her married name Duree and the nickname Andi, disappeared Dec. 19, 1978.

She was living with her now-deceased grandparents, Matthew and Eleanor Luse, in Bellwood at the time, and attended the Woodrow Wilson School in the Garden Heights section of Altoona.

Trooper Richard J. Brozenich of the Hollidaysburg barracks is the most recent officer on the case.

''You always wonder what really did happen,'' he said. ''Did she want to disappear or did somebody harm her?''

In 30 years, police have had no leads, but Brozenich recently made progress when he located Coyle's sister Molly Coyle and their parents, Jean and John Coyle, who all live in Texas.

Molly Coyle believes her sister is dead, but wants she closure.

''I've almost always felt she was already gone,'' she said, adding that she thinks about and prays for her sister, who would have turned 60 in March. ''That's all I can do.''

Molly Coyle said her mom will submit a swab test to the FBI so her DNA is on file for identification purposes. The case is listed on the Doe Network at www .doenetwork.org, and Andrea Coyle's dental records are in the National Crime Information Center.

In a phone interview two days before the anniversary of her sister's disappearance, Molly Coyle talked about her sister and growing up in a military family.

''We were exact opposites - she was the introvert, I was the extrovert,'' Molly Coyle said. She said her sister suffered a nervous breakdown and in 1971 underwent shock treatments. She said the hospital stopped at No. 8 out of the 15 treatments a doctor had prescribed.

''My sister was destroyed mentally,'' Molly Coyle said, noting not much was known about mental illness at the time. ''She never did recover.''

Andrea Coyle married in 1972 or 1973, and Molly Coyle said the courtship happened fast. When her husband went to work for 16-hour days, Andrea was left home alone, which was when problems would arise, Molly said.

Andrea Coyle attempted suicide in September 1973, causing her husband to take her to the hospital, pack up her belongings then put her on a plane back to her parents.

Her sister hitchhiked all over the country, she said. In 1974, Andrea Coyle showed up at Molly Coyle's doorstep in Salt Lake City, where she was living while working as a flight attendant, with nothing but the clothes on her back. Molly Coyle put her sister up in a hotel while she went on a three-day work trip, but when she returned, Andrea Coyle was gone and showed up again a week later.

''She always did this,'' Molly Coyle said.

The family usually heard from Andrea Coyle every four to six months.

Andrea was in the Army from Sept. 2, 1974, to Feb. 28, 1975, when she was medically discharged.

In 1976, Andrea Coyle was arrested in Washington, D.C., for a petty crime, and her grandparents brought her home to serve out her probation.

''You could tell my sister

wasn't normal,'' Molly Coyle said, adding that if she took medication, she was OK.

''We didn't know what to do,'' she said. ''How do you handle this?''

Molly Coyle said Andrea Coyle could not find work in Altoona, and her probation was up in late 1978, about the time of her disappearance.

Molly said Andrea went to school the day she disappeared to turn in her books and get her grades. She never did the latter. She said Andrea took all the cash she had with her, but no ID. Molly said her mom also remembers something about Andrea buying a flower in the area.

Molly Coyle said her mom also received a letter a year later from a cult called the Mooney Organization addressed to Andrea.

Brozenich said police will not close the case until the possibility of her being alive is ''pretty slim.'' She would have to be in her 90s or 100s before they would close it.

Molly said she promised her 81-year-old mom and 84-year-old father that if her sister is not found by the time she starts planning for her own death, she will have her declared dead and get her a headstone.

I wonder if that shock therapy blew holes in her memory or her mental health. It's different now then it was back then, but even now, though it can really help some people, it can have the other effect sadly.

Difficult to say without knowledge of her mental state prior to the therapy.

I am wondering if the married name (Duree) is incorrect. Ancestry shows the marriage (on 13 January 1973 in El Paso) to Allan R Durre. This spelling is backed up by other records on Ancestry for Mr Durre. The relevance would be if Andrea was using her married name any searches would be misdirected. There is an Ancestry record for an Andrea Durre living in San Antonio in 1993/94 (this from the US phone and address directories on Ancestry) but there are no other records and it may be an unrelated individual. There is also a marriage record for Allen R Durre in Nevada in 1998, which may mean a divorce was formalised at some point.
