PA PA - Carol Dougherty, 9, Bristol, 22 Oct 1962

Number 12 on the list doesn't appear to correspond with our case. I'm finding it difficult to trace a particular 12 year old ( at the time of the abuse) who could be the letter writer, there's too many contenders on the list.
I'm back to wanting the cryptic emails, they might narrow it down.

Just an update, I spoke to my grandmother who has said that most of the relatives that were there and remember it are dead at this point. I am looking into talking to kids from my family that may have been her friend, knew her or were at least close in age to her.

My guess is it would have imprinted on them being so young and having something so tragic happen to someone they knew. I am having help track them down as many have scattered across the country.

Hi all! This is my 1st time posting. I think Carol's case is connected to a case in my area. 9 yr old Marise Chiverella was kidnapped and murdered in Hazleton PA 2 years after Carol. Very similar signature. Father Joseph Sabadish who has been long suspected of killing Carol was in the area that day for a basket ball game at St Josephs. Marise's murder has never been solved

Welcome to W/S Jessiejay :)

I had seen Marise mentioned before but wasn't aware of the basket ball connection.
I will look into it further.

Here's more info and a video about Marise's case.

A small Eureka moment.

Mary Theresa Simpson aged 12, unsolved murder.

''There is another hunch. A hunch that at one time this person made
contact. Almost ready to yield. Almost ready to seek peace''

Possibly what's considered the '12' connection.

Edited to add - Can somebody find out the details of Mary's murder and start a thread linking this as a possible connection. I can't find anything apart from a partial obit that I can't access. Thanking in advance.

The residents of the town where he grew up suspected him. He was a mean, miserable man. If he was home for a visit, I didn't go near his house. He was nasty to all the kids in the town. Do I doubt it? No. Am I old enough to know anything other than hearing from the older people in my area? No.

Jessiejay, I will talk to my fam and see if there were any whispers about Marise or anyone else.

His obit would be in the Pottsville Republican. I don't think I can get it from 1999 on line. I also didn't realize he lived til I was out of high school... I remember him as a kid.

I'm not surprised at what your cousins said. Serious allegations were made against this priest by a pair of siblings who claim he abused
both of them as children beginning in 1960.

His offenses were not public knowledge at the time they occurred. Back in the 60's, these things were kept quiet, but rumors got around. I'd wager the brother and sister who came forward as adults were not his only victims. They're just the only ones who acknowledged the abuse publicly.

There was a priest like this in our parish when I was growing up in the 1960's. For years it was rumored that he was an abuser, but the abuse went unreported until the late 1980's. First one victim spoke, and several others followed. No one was surprised. If a child had died under circumstances similar to Carol Ann's murder, the residents of my community would have "known" it was him, too, just like your cousins and their neighbors.

This is just horrific.

I grew up in a non-religious home but like most kids of my generation, was sent to Sunday School.

My priest (Anglican) was a bearded tall thin man, who had a lovely family of his own and always seemed very God-like and gentle to me, if somewhat detached and intellectual who was completely uninterested in children. He never spoke to me, for instance, or attended the Sunday School.

I later went to Catholic school and was baffled by the fervent worship they had for priests and nuns. The priests treated the nuns like hand servants and the nuns seemed delighted by it.

Now, my bff's youngest brother is a priest, and we are quite sure he is also a pedophile.

His views are so extreme he was rejected from the Catholic church downunder, and sent to Rome where he spends his time in a robe and sandals, teaching...you guessed it...children.

We all know of the coverups within the Catholic church, it almost seemed at time if it was literally a safe haven for child molesters. Catholic priests' child abuse victims are coming out of the woodwork in their thousands and getting $$$ in compensation and apologies, yet poor little Carol Ann can't even get a decent investigation or anyone to even give a damn, except her loved ones and the wonderful folks on WS and a handful of other websites. :(

It seems glaringly obvious that this priest was a serial pedophile of the worst type, a murdering one. I would love to see locals of PA start to demand that police reopen this case, and the Catholic Church to cooperate and be voluntarily open and transparent for once.

This needs to be reinvestigated. Properly, this time. Carol Ann deserves no less, nor do any of the other little victims. The Catholic Church needs to also be a bit more proactive in dealing with their dirty laundry. Shoving it into a corner and hoping it goes away is not being accountable in my opinion. :furious:

Public pressure is needed here. Pressure on the government and LE to give Carol Ann a thorough cold case investigation.

Sabadish is mentioned somewhere in this awesome book - about the VIDOCQ society (a must read)

Too weary to hunt it down right now tho.

Im going to see if I can get my hands on this book.

Im not ready to call him a murderer. A horrible human.. yes. But murder to me is something that needs to be proven before you label someone with that.
It definitely has got to be looked into..

I can feel the temperature rising.

Interestingly enough, one of his suspensions includes the time frame in which Postulate Nun Robin Elam was murdered in WV.

Found the relevant page from the Vidocq book: http://www.litmir.net/br/?b=125898&p=55

What would be awesome is a timeline of exactly where Sabadish was sent, and when. At least we know he was primarily centered around eastern Pennsylvania (as opposed to being shipped around the world to missions.. ) so it shouldn't be too hard.

The more precise the dates, the better.. we can match it up against unsolveds then and see if there's a pattern as he moves about..

Just incidentally -- the red barretta is really bothering me, and I can't say why.. like I ought to remember something relevant to it. D'oh. Another murder? Idk.

Timeline http://www.bishop-accountability.org...6_Sabadish.pdf

I had a quick look earlier at his family background. Found his parents the 1930 census gives them born in Czech but 1940 census gives Austria. Two different spellings of surname, starts as Sabadis and changes to Sabadish.
Seems there's 3 sisters, he's the only boy.
Mary b1924, Agnela/Agnes b1927 and Annie b1915
No sign of a Peggy (as listed in above article) Maybe she was called Margaret and used Peggy instead of Mary- who knows ?
There appears to be a Joseph Sabadis/dish that has a family, maybe it's his fathers brother. Quite a few in the area of Reilly township, Schuylkill,Pa

As for the red barrette, I have no idea, that's the only mention I've seen.

Well, here's a start:

<modsnip>

^ Rev. Joseph F. Sabadish, DOB: 10/17/1918; DoD: 2/5/1999
Ordained in 1945.

Two of his victims place him for sure in Bristol, PA on a regular basis from 1960-64 and from '64-'68. This was his home ground - his mother lived in the area (he took the kids to her house.. ugh).

He served in St Michael's from May 1957 to June 1962.

We know he was in Hazelton on the day Marise Chiverella went missing in 1962. (2 hrs from Tullytown/Bristol/Levittown)

St. William Church, Philadelphia, PA (Parish school)
Rev. Joseph F. Sabadish (Assistant Pastor) 12/67-6/73 (about 40 mins from Tullytown/Bristol/Levittown)

We know he was sexually interested in both women, and children of both sexes.

We know he was sexually aggressive and claimed to be "sterile".
