A longtime friend of murder suspect Jancarlos Perez took the stand Friday and described getting a cryptic phone call from the defendant, who he saw use a can of gas to torch the victim’s SUV along a secluded road.

Perez, 22, of Hazleton, is charged with criminal homicide in the shooting death of Jose A. “Luigi” Concepcion, whose bullet-riddled corpse was found in Humboldt Industrial Park, several miles from the spot where his car was burned along Club 40 Road. Prosecutors allege Perez shot Concepcion, his friend, in the head seven times using a stolen five-shot .38-caliber revolver — meaning he had to stop and reload midway through the crime.

A mutual friend, 25-year-old Kevin De Jesus, testified at a preliminary hearing Friday that he had been doing training as an Army reservist on Jan. 19, when he got a call from Perez on his way home...

Shooting suspect argues jurors should not hear about work as police informant

http://citizensvoice.com/news/shooting-suspect-argues-jurors-should-not-hear-about-work-as-police-informant-1.2131982

The attorney for shooting suspect Jancarlos Perez argued Monday that jurors should not hear about his work as a police informant because it “makes no sense” that it would be a motive for murder.

Prosecutors allege Perez and Concepcion were drug dealers working for the same supplier but who competed for sales. They are seeking to tell jurors about how only a few months before the shooting, Perez informed on Concepcion to state police, telling a trooper when and where to find Concepcion in possession of a large amount of heroin.

That information will show a jury that Perez previously tried to eliminate his competition, as well as demonstrate his familiarity with the crime scene — the location Perez gave troopers was the same area in which Concepcion’s body was later found, prosecutors say.

But in a filing Monday, Perez’s attorney Jack McMahon argues that a jury hearing about Perez’s drug-dealing past would be unduly prejudicial. Drug dealing in Luzerne County is a “particularly sensitive issue and can easily spoil a jury,” he wrote.

Appearing stoic in a yellow prison jumpsuit, shooting suspect Jancarlos Perez pleaded guilty Monday to third-degree murder for gunning down his childhood friend in a drug turf dispute.

Perez, 23, will spend 20 to 40 years in prison for executing Jose A. “Luigi” Concepcion, 23, whose bullet-riddled corpse was found Jan. 19, 2016, in Hazle Township’s Humboldt Industrial Park, several miles from where the vehicle he was using was found burned along Club 40 Road.

As he left the courthouse in handcuffs, Perez indicated he pleaded guilty so he could one day return to his family.

“I got kids,” Perez said.

Noting Perez did not show any remorse for his “senseless actions,” Luzerne County Judge Fred A. Pierantoni III accepted his plea and immediately sentenced Perez to 20 to 40 years in prison, the maximum penalty. The judge gave Perez credit for 433 days time served and ordered him to pay more than $9,800 in restitution.
