Coates told police he was there to pick up the child he had with Chanetta Powell when they got into an argument. Lamont Powell came downstairs with a pistol, yelled at Coates to leave, then pointed the firearm at him and forced him to his knees before punching and kicking him in the face, the complaint said.

Coates told the Tribune-Review on March 11 that he hardly knew Chanetta's brother or the rest of the family.

Breaking news:
3 more people questioned in the murders; arrested on other charges but being held stolen weapons, heroin.
Justin Gomez, Cheron Shelton (250,000 bail), Robert Thomas and a woman Ashley Smith. Active warrants served.
All four are now facing new charges related to the incident.

On Feb. 21, 2013, police went to a home in the 900 block of Hill Avenue looking for the men. They found them, along with Thomas and another man named Aemond Knight — who was killed in December in McKeesport in a case that remains unresolved. Looks like they have been involved in crime for years

It was the second time Mr. Gomez was interviewed about the shootings. He previously had been questioned, along with his brother, Ryan Gomez, and released.

At a bond hearing this morning on a case involving drug and weapons charges against Robert Thomas, it was revealed through statements by both prosecution and defense counsel that Thomas is considered a suspect in the March 9th shootings in Wilkinsburg. That information was then further confirmed through testimony from an Allegheny County homicide detective. Following our argument that we consider Thomas a flight risk and a danger to the community based on his previous record and the drug and weapons charges that he currently faces, Judge Cashman agreed with our assessment and denied bond.”

47-year-old John Ellis faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Ellis is paralyzed from the waist down after being shot during a backyard cookout at a home on Franklin Avenue in Wilkinsburg Mar. 9.
he remembers is hearing a popping sound and then playing dead after he realized he was shot.

“It really didn’t dawn on me that I got shot until I got hit two more times, that’s when I got out of the chair and tried to run to the front of my house and that’s where I collapsed,” he said.

Ellis lives next door and was visiting his neighbors and having some food during the cookout. He was one of three people wounded by two gunman who killed five people including a pregnant woman.

Police have officially named a second suspect in the Wilkinsburg mass shooting that resulted in the deaths of six people, including an unborn baby, and left three others wounded.

Cheron Shelton, 29, who was previously questioned in connection with the March 9 shooting at a family cookout, is now being considered a suspect in the shooting by investigators, according to a court motion that was filed Monday for a change in venue in a separate drug case.

Officials have said Shelton is not related to the victims.

One of the suspects wanted to kill again at the funerals for the victims, according to informants.

A man police say gunned down people at a Wilkinsburg cookout wanted to continue the slaughter at the victims’ funerals, according to two informants on whom police relied to bring charges in the case Thursday.

“I’m trying to treat them like the Jews; I’m trying to eliminate their whole Blood lines,” suspect Cheron Shelton told his co-defendant, Robert Thomas, according to a jailhouse informant. Thomas talked Shelton out of the second shooting, according to court paperwork.
