    DARBY, Pa. —
A psychiatrist who was grazed by gunfire from a patient at a hospital on Thursday helped stop the patient by apparently using his own weapon to shoot and wound him, but not before a caseworker was killed - The patient Richard Plotts opened fire after entering the doctor's office at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital with the caseworker:

My dad had surgery today. The phenomenally nice hospital requires a drive through a particularly bad area down in FL. I put my .357 in my car's gun safe when I got to the secure parking deck. My mother however, had her little .22 in her bag when I met up with her on the surgical floor :) She's 74- and a heck of a shot. This story makes me think I ought to carry the rest of the week!

' "It doesn't surprise me at all," said former Crum Lynne neighbor Diane Clements. "He was a creep."
That's one of the nicer things said about Plotts.

His ex-wife, who asked to remain anonymous, told NBC10 her ex-husband was abusive, made threats on her life and acted violently toward her family.

"He's a con artist," said his ex-wife. "He has psychiatric issues." '

Using a chair to shield himself from attack, Silverman fired at least 10 times at Richard Plotts, using a gun he carried with him for protection.

He managed to hit Plotts three times - twice in the chest and once in the arm - despite being injured himself.

The doctor was shot in the hand and a bullet grazed his head, but Silverman continued to fire at Plotts until his gun was empty. He then managed to escape the office.

I thought firearms were banned at most ALL hospitals? I am glad the doctor was armed but wonder why that is not being addressed, another thing being left out is the type of firearm that was used.

Though I am not at all surprised to hear the Doc was a shrink, I think many psychiatrists are VERY aware of the dangers posed by their clients and the public at large.

At St Vincent's in Jax, I did not see a sign- and I did take my mother's gun and locked it in my safe. She was so absorbed/worried, etc ., about my Dad, she had forgotten to take it out of her bag. At Shands, there is a metal detector at the doorway to ER- but not to the rest of the hospital.

Hospital policy bars anyone except on-duty law enforcement officers from carrying weapons on campus, said a Mercy Health System spokeswoman.

The hospital said Friday it was thankful for the "brave and difficult action" taken by Silverman and his colleagues. It said he remains a full member of the medical staff and "we look forward to Dr. Silverman's return to serving patients at our hospital."

Plotts had complained to Silverman previously about the gun policy.

Which of course means employees or visitors can't even technically keep a weapon in their car. Hospitals go WAY WAY too far with their PC policies, like when they ban smoking "on the property" and force all of the doctors/nurses to smoke out on the sidewalk in front of of the public.

It is kind of funny though, if the hospital is on a busy street you get to see a dozen or more "Health Care Professionals" in scrubs smoking like chimneys.

The one thing they SHOULD ban IMO is the display of tattoos by hospital staff on duty/in work clothes, there is nothing more disgusting than a "professional" in scrubs covered in what look like jail house tattoos. I am not prejudiced against ink, I have some myself, but in a health care setting it is like a walking billboard that says "I may be infected with Hepatitis or God only knows what else!!!"
