Ground Rules

Keep the discussion relevant to Stephany's murder. Treat Stephany's family with respect - they are victims also.

No name calling!

No discussion of Natalie or JonBenet or their families. There must be a clear connection between Stephany's murder and the cases of the other two girls, publicized in the mainstream media, before any discussion will be allowed.

The information regarding JVDS's dog and the homeless man MUST either be substantiated or dropped. At this point it appears this info is based on rumor/speculation. Show where the info comes from or drop it.

No disparaging remarks about JVDS's mother. You may discuss what has been printed, her quotes in the media, etc. You may NOT bash her. She too is a victim of her son's behavior.

As always - TOS applies. If you are having trouble, check the TOS forum. You will find a lot of info on threadequitte, dealing with other posters and the rules, long and short versions.

If you have questions - ask a mod before posting.

Thanks for your cooperation! And thank you for caring about Stephany.

Thanks for the link. I always speculated that this was a crime of passion (IMO), but it does appear pre-mediated if he performed these searches BEFORE Stephany was killed.

searches like: relationship between Peruvian and Chilean police, buses to Chile, Chilean border pass, and countries that do not grant extradition Latin America. Indications that the Dutch had always planned to flee the Peruvian justice system and avoid being captured.

He seems to always be one step ahead doesn't he....

I don't understand how it can be said that hours before the murder he was searching for ways to leave Peru unless they mean the day before. He was at the casino from before midnight until he and Stephany went to the hotel. It sounds like they played some poker, he murdered her, and then he searched. If he searched hours before, then he either searched before he went to the casino, or he seached while Stephany was in the room and when they were playing poker.

Good point, because we know he was at the casino (or as it was reported and seen on video). But the article says:

the Dutch accused of brutally murdering the young Peruvian Stephany Flores, made several searches on the Internet hours before the crime, according to a report the news program Cuarto Poder.

Bad reporting, or is this what is speculated -- that Stephany saw him searching on the computer and he flipped out. I don't recall how many hours she was in the room before he left to get the coffee.

I think they arrived at the hotel around 5:20 am and by 8 Joran was getting coffee. What could "hours before" mean if it doesn't mean the day before? They should be able to pinpoint the time of death as about the same time that the poker game stopped. I think the article is misleading as it doesn't add up with other facts.

Here he is pretending to be locked out of the hotel room after getting coffee at 8:36

One news article describes before while the other describes after. I think in context it was after her murder. I also think google can pinpint each server hit date and time. JMO

It makes sense that after he murdered her he was looking for ways to get out of Peru and stay out of Peru, although it's gruesome to think that he could cold bloodedly murder someone, shower, change, pack, surf the net and run out for coffee all while Stephany was lying on the floor in his room. It doesn't make any sense that he was searching for ways to get out of Peru hours before Stephany was killed.

There still isn't any evidence that the murder was more than a crime of passion, and that could be the difference between 6 years and 35 years.

The laptop findings were initially reported by the Peruvian TV program "CUARTO PODER".

Here are videos of that TV program.

Perhaps someone who can understand Spanish could help us with the 'before' or 'after' issue as it was first reported:

Part 1:

Part 2:

It would certainly help if we could see an 'official' govt. report of the laptop findings....but that will probably take another 5 months!!!! MOO

Another article that says he searched for ways to get out of Peru after the murder...

Dutch murder suspect Joran van der Sloot began planning his escape to Chile immediately after killing Peruvian student Stephany Flores.

A TV programme in Peru quoted a police dossier on Joran, stating that the Dutchman had specifically searched for countries which lacked an extradition treaty with Peru. Mr Van der Sloot was arrested by Chilean police in June and handed over to Peru, although the two countries have no extradition treaty.

Perhaps the searches were both before and after the murder of Stephany??

One articles says "he visited sites related to Natalee Holloway's death, his first victim". Maybe these were before he murdered Stephany (and may have even perpetuated it?)? And then the searches of how to get out of Peru were after he killed her.

Just speculating...

Or made Stephany made those searches about Natalie and then confronted him.

That's another possibility I was thinking about. Stephanie searched the NH information after seeing the alert about her on his computer from someone still angry with JVS and it being the 5 year anniversary. I still believe that's where the irony of this happening on that anniversary date comes into play here. On any other day, no one would have been sending him nasty messages about NH IMO and Stephanie may never have been the wiser about him. He still likely would have taken her for every penny she had though.

It would be quite something if the computer was used to search Natalee while Stephany was there, and then used to search ways to escape from Peru, as that would correspond to the story he gave after his arrest. He said that Stephany searched his computer, found out who he was, he became angry and murdered her.

Did van der Sloot Google escape routes?

The article says van der Sloot Googled the following English terms "relationship between the Peruvian and Chilean police," Chilean border pass "," buses in Chile "and" countries that do not extradite in Latin America " which revealed that he planned to flee to neighboring South after the crime to escape justice.
Joran van der Sloot was arrested in Chile on June 4 when he went to board a taxi to the Chilean resort of Vina del Mar.

I have a hard time believing that Stephany was googling him knowing he was right there or nearby. It would all depend on the exact times of the searches.

If he is demented enough to google ways to escape the country and avoid extradition while a girl that he just murdered lays there, imo it's not far out of the realm of possibilities that he googled Natalee to cover his butt and blame another victim, he did it to Natalee why wouldn't he do it to Stephany.

If he was caught with Stephany's things and or money then an additional charge of robbery will add years to his sentence.

How does an alert just pop up on your computer anyway? I've never had that done on any of my computers.

Come on. This is Joran van der Sloot we're talking about. He loves who he is. He would've done the Holloway searches on his computer or instructed
Stephanie to do them so she would know who she was dealing with. He would want her to know he killed Natalie because part of his goal would have been to see the fear in Stephanie's eyes before he killed her. That's how a psychopathic mind works. They want the power and control over another human, and they want to see fear in the eyes of their victims. JMO.

I agree, Annalia. I don't think it was Stephany that did the searching of Natalee's name. After all, it was the 'anniversary' of her death so it's likely it was more on JVS's mind than usual. Plus, he'd just extorted money from her family. Like I said, maybe it kicked in a certain mindset which put into motion what inevitably happened to Stephany. Or maybe it was an attempt to form an alibi after the fact. Either way.

I never bought that pop up alert thing either.

My bolding

Excellent point about his extortion suzihawk. He sure could have been searching what was online about his extorting Beth and later used it to blame Stephany. That is how he operated the last five years, it's always someone else that made him do things he didn't want to do. Either way like you say.
Nothing is an excuse for murder.

Just wanted to mention that both my email and Windows Messenger alert on my computer. If I was in the middle of an extortion deal and was in email correspondence with someone involved in that, I would probably check my e-mail whenever it alerted.

It was very early in the morning in Peru but it was not in other parts of the world.
