Death and the CEO: Spouse Abuse Records Don't Explain Timeline at Shacknai's House

This is an early (July 19, 2011) MSM article originally stating GS was at the house, and incorrectly attributing the 911 call to GS (among other errors). Also contains unsourced comments about hearing a "loud party" at the house.

And on July 11, although Zahau Nalepa was looking after Max and his older sister Gabrielle when he fell, it was the 13 or 14-year-old girl who called 911, not Zahau Nalepa.

Monday July 18: Police launch investigation into Max's death. "Sexual accident" theory of Zahau's Nalepa's death is ruled out by authorities. Max's autopsy scheduled for July 17 or 18.
*Correction: This report originally said said that Max's sister was present. A source close the investigation tells BNET that none of Max's siblings were in the house at the time.

Details Shed on Shacknai's Second Divorce

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Details-Shed-on-Shacknai-Divorce.html

Weeks later, in a formal letter to Chief John Bennett of the Paradise Valley Police Department dated Jan. 26, Jonah wrote Dina previously filed “false and misleading reports” about bruises on her body stemming from contact with their dog.

“Importantly,” Shacknai wrote, "Dina has been treated medically for years for a bruising disorder, whereby the slightest contact with an object or other material causes bruises. This information can certainly be verified medically.”

Shacknai, the prominent founder and CEO of Medicis, a pharmaceutical company based in Scottsdale, Ariz., wrote that although never feeling physically endangered, Dina physically assaulted him several times, once causing him a broken finger.

"Despite heroic efforts on the part of paramedics and hospital staff, he was unable to recover from the injuries suffered early last week. His loving, kind and vibrant spirit will be forever in our hearts and those whom he touched every day."

Police won't reopen Calif. mansion death probe

Coronado police have rejected a request by the mother of a 6-year-old boy who died after falling down stairs at a California mansion to reopen the investigation into her son's death.

UT San Diego reports that representatives of Dina Shacknai released a letter from Coronado's police chief and San Diego County's chief medical examiner that reaffirmed Max Shacknai's death was an accident.

Mystery Mansion Death: Family Shocked, Devastated

Authorities discovered Zahau's body on Wednesday after a houseguest, Adam Shacknai, told police he found her completely naked with a rope around her neck hanging from a balcony off the main house.

Zahau's sister Mary Zahau-Loehner, 33, told ABC News she spoke with her sister around midnight Tuesday, and everything seemed to be OK.

"They were together for two or three years and I think they were happy," she said. ""She goes to that Coronado house with his kids, they go there in the summertime."

Records reveal final cell phone calls to Rebecca Zahau

**Cell phone log for RZ in this article**

News 8 obtained two pages of AT&T billing logs from the 32-year-old's cell phone, which family members said was a newer-model phone using the Windows Phone mobile operating system.

The cell phone records confirm Zahau listened to her voicemail for two minutes at 12:50 a.m. on July 13, about two hours before her estimated time of death.

Zahau's sister, Mary Zahau-Loehner, said detectives told her that Jonah Shacknai left the voicemail on Rebecca's phone around 12:30 a.m. on the morning of her death.

Detectives said the message was erased and officials will not confirm who left the voicemail. That does not sit well with the Zahau family attorney Anne Bremner.

"The message, whatever it was, is forever erased," Bremner said. "They're pinning this entire suicide conclusion on a phone message that no one has ever heard."

Mayor Expresses Support for Coronado Police in Shacknai Case

“The Coronado Police Department and the County Medical Examiner have yet to receive any new evidence, and unless there is new evidence, I concur with those two departments that the case has been properly investigated,” he said in an email.

Councilwoman Carrie Downey, also contacted via email, noted that Dina Shacknai, like any member of the public, will be welcomed, but added “the council does not get involved in police decisions to investigate or the district attorney’s decision to prosecute based on the evidence developed.

“Those decisions should not be influenced by the political process and should be made by the experts trained in those fields,” concluded Downey, an attorney.

Dr. Phil Takes on Zahau Case

Attorney Anne Bremner discussed other aspects of the case, including her allegation that a computer in the mansion was used around 3 a.m. July 13. Authorities had concluded that's around the time that Zahau died.

She did not say what information was accessed on the computer.

Sister's Quest: Justice for Becky

The injuries are among several issues Horwath, Zahau's younger sister, and her family want explained. The voice mail cited by investigators was reported to them in witness interviews and the fact that a call took place was confirmed by phone records, but the recording had been deleted from Zahau's phone, so investigators never heard its contents.

Horwath also wants a more detailed explanation of comings and goings at the mansion, owned by Shacknai, phone records from other principals in the case and video evidence that shows their whereabouts in the hours before her sister died.

Report Reveals Other Injuries, Details in Coronado Mansion Death

Updated at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday: San Diego's CBS8 reports that an attorney for Jonah Shacknai has sent a letter threatening legal action to Rebecca Zahau's family attorney, accusing her of making “a series of inaccurate and utterly unsupported statements” about the case.

Investigators faced a barrage of questions Tuesday as criticism from Rebecca Zahau's family and outside experts mounted following the determination that she committed suicide.

Autopsy results show that Zahau, who died July 13 in the Spreckels mansion, suffered other injuries that authorities did not mention in Friday's news conference about her death and that of Max Shacknai, 6, son of the home's wealthy owner, Jonah Shacknai.

Zahau had blood on her legs, abrasions on her forehead and a contusion on her scalp that were not mentioned despite a detailed presentation by authorities that included slides, diagrams and a panel of county experts led by Sheriff Bill Gore.

She also was found to have had tape marks on her legs, and a T-shirt around her neck that had been in her mouth, leading to questions about whether she could have been bound by other materials and if she had been gagged.

The Sheriff's Department released a statement Tuesday defending the investigation, with comments from Dr. Jonathan Lucas, who performed Zahau's autopsy.

He noted that “as in any comprehensive investigation, some findings cannot be entirely explained.”
