Pre-Trial Hearings & Discussion

Hi Kat, you got me thinking LOL and it was interesting about Laci and Connor's autopsy reports.

They washed up on April 14th, 2003, and the reports were finished and sealed by May 15th. Then the report was leaked by being read to the public on national TV on May 29th. With that happening, the prosecutor requested the reports be unsealed on May 30th, which they were.

It's just interesting the reports were unsealed a month and a half after her body washed up and the trial wasn't till the end of the following year {I think ;}

Hi Ingrid, I believe the judge in Sandra's case, as to why he sealed the A report. I don't think it has anything to do with keeping a pure jury pool - the trial probably won't be held till the end of next year IMO And we know if they could seat a jury for John Couey, you can seat any jury.

I believe the henious {sp} nature and gravity of the killing would cause great sadness to the families involved in this crime, and it is to keep them in better stead until the time comes when the facts will be presented at trial.

I don't even think they'll be leaked out of respect to the family.

Michelle Young was litterally slaughtered with her daughter then running thru the blood in the room and that report was not sealed. And it was one case where we almost NEVER got any info about what was happening in the case. Truly tight lipped they were.

It must be there are aspects of Sandra's A report that are beyond the pale. xox

Do they ever find these leekers and hold them accountable?

(Just to clarify, I'm not talking about the media that reports it because freedom of speech is a beautiful thing. I'm talking about people that take an oath to protect and serve.)

Morning Daisy, I don't think we ever found out who leaked Laci's report, but as I remember they figured some clerk who either worked for the coroner's office or associated in some way with it made a copy which was passed on to someone else, maybe through several other people, and ended up in the hands of a reporter.

I think it was Geraldo Rivera who first read parts of it on the air. Maybe someone here remembers. But of course there was no accountability for whoever leaked it. at least that the public ever heard.

anyone needs to know what the "object" was. Whatever it was it did great damage and no doubt aided in her death. Think the most awful object and go with it if you must.

4 Boys just raped another boy in the shower rooms at school...broom handle...so? Horrible, just horrible.

I think Sandra and her family should be left with a tad of dignity.

A listener gave me a heads up about the below mentioned entry regarding my reporting skills.

The possible change of venue was expressed by a former prosecutor from Santa Clara County with intimate knowledge of the demographic and legal makeup of San Joaquin County. He mentioned Los Angeles as a potential location for the trial because residents, while outraged by the crime, were not as emotionally involved as residents from San Joaquin County. As a responsible journalist with 30 years experience, I attributed the comment in the story.

As for the 'video tour' of key areas of the case. As was noted in the opening graphic, my tour guide was the local reporter who was the last person to speak to Melissa Huckaby before her arrest. This reporter was one of the first on the scene in the mobile home park and personally escorted me through not only the park, but the church and irrigation pond. Again, as a responsible journalist with over 30 years experience, I attributed the information to the source within the story.

I am comfortable with not only the information I personally gathered, but the sources from which gathered the information. It was not my intent to grab attention to the station, it was (and is) my intent to provide the facts as were reported, and observed, by/to me.

As for my reporting skills....I'll leave that to the numerous Associated Press and Edward R. Murrow awards I'm looking at right now in the newsroom.

I am not that taken with the 'reporter' Steve Gregory's reporting skills:

"KFI's Steve Gregory reports a possible trial for the Sunday school teacher could end up in Los Angeles County."
This seems to me to be utter speculation, which others have done as well, but he does not back it up with any facts. Also, he is reporting to a largely Los Angeles County audience, what better way to grab attention for the radio station.

Secondly, in his video 'tour', the house that he identifies as being that of the Lawless family is totally the wrong house.

So, anything he has to say about change of venue at this point in time and specifically to Los Angeles County, is wishful thinking on his part, in my opinion.

bumping... this is the week for this one... this Friday. Will post any links to it as I find them.

News stories should start breaking anyday now in order to get everyone thinking about this case again. Here is crossing my fingers she pleads guilty!

Salem

Hi Nurse - thanks for starting this thread!

Ready and waiting to see the first steps to justice for Sandra taken.

Boy, I am hoping she pleads guilty, but that would surprise me.

My first guess is that they stall the plea again.

My second guess is a straight not guilty plea

Third guess is ngri (not guilty by reason of insanity). This would surprise me the most... more than any other plea, since she obviously knew what she was doing was wrong and any attorney in their right mind would not go there with no leg to stand on. The nature of the crime and the fact that she is a woman does not constitute evidence toward an insanity plea.

More likely scenario: She'll probably plea not guilty and ask for change of venue. Her ensuing defense will probably be that the murder was an accident. Then, during or right before trial, she'll take a plea bargain for the "other" offenses, like kidnapping, rape, and a second degree murder charge if one is offered. This will enitrely depend on the "feelings" the DA and defense have about the jury during the trial. A big gamble for Huckaby to go to trial tho....

I don't know if this is the correct thread to put this question in, or if it has been already discussed, but it's about timing of this aspect of the crime... I am not sure that we know Sandra was deceased when she was stuffed (by Melissa??) into Melissa Lawless Huckaby's suitcase. The reason has to do with rigor. If she had the suitcase out in front of the trailer that very afternoon, wouldn't she had had to put Sandra in it before rigor set in? I know the timings on smaller bodies are faster than on larger adult bodies, but no details. If she put her in before rigor set in, was Sandra really expired or unconscious? Once rigor sets in it lasts for a length of time and wouldnt' that make stuffing a body inside a small suitcase problematic until rigor is over. If she stuffed her in before rigor, whose to say for sure Sandra was actually deceased at that moment, MH does not have the training to make a "death" pronouncement, so we would just have her word for that, the forensics should ferret the facts out, but it all changes the credibility of any claim in a possible plea of "accident".

Here are the live feed news links. I hope they all work. I'll test them after I post and see what happens.

I am sitting on the edge of my chair waiting for this hearing. May MH feel the Good Lord's hand upside her head and the right thing today!
