"RCMP are asking the public for tips to help crack a 25-year-old cold case involving an anonymous letter and an arson attack in Prince Rupert, B.C., that killed three generations of one family.

'I can’t imagine the horror they went through'- Staff Sgt. Garry Kerr

On Feb. 5, 1990 a fire destroyed the Brooks Bank building in Prince Rupert, killing four members of the same family, Helga Rochon, her daughters Sherri and Pauline Rochon, and Pauline’s daughter Kimberly Dumais.

"The scene was horrific," said lead investigator Staff Sgt. Garry Kerr in a statement issued by police on Thursday morning. "I still think about the moment."

"The bodies of four people were discovered inside the third-floor apartment suite above a store after firefighters extinguished the vicious blaze that was started in the early morning hours of Feb. 5, 1990.

Helga Rochon, 45, and her daughters Sherri, 26, and Pauline, 19, were killed, along with Pauline's seven-month-old daughter Kimberly.

Another sister and the couple who lived in the suite below the family managed to escape.

The matriarch had been president of the Prince Rupert Lioness Club and was known for raising money for a charity telethon, her daughter Lorraine Rochon recalled. Her sister Sherri had a photographic memory, graduated the top of her class and was growing her career as a marine biologist. Pauline was a smart and career-oriented, driven young woman and mom, added her sister.

Narrowing the search for the arsonist is a renewed goal of Mounties in B.C., added Supt. Ward Lymburner at the provincial RCMP headquarters".

"I can still see them huddled together in the living room area, the small child still in her mother’s arms. I can’t imagine the horror they went through," said Kerr.

The police investigation later revealed that the fire was deliberately set, but nobody was ever arrested for the arson or the four homicides.

But police did learn that it was not the first arson attack on the building. Someone had also tried to burn the building down three months earlier.

On Thursday, Helga Rochon's surviving daughter Lorraine joined RCMP in urging the public for help.

They revealed a family member had received an anonymous letter with new details about the case four years ago"

Someone tries to burn down a building 3 months before a family dies. So what would a person learn from this? Well, that by the time you want to commit the 2nd fire, you have all your ducks in a row so it goes ahead as planned. In this case, follow the money.

Who benefits from this building not being there? They aren't thinking of the people IN the building ..what do they care. They just want this building gone so either they can rebuild on the site, sell the property, have a better view for their upcoming apartment project, etc.

The anonymous letter sent to a family member was never released. Unable to even speculate what is said. Odds are whomever was paid to start the fire, may very well have been told that there was no one in the building. After all, even some arsonists have a moral compass, right?

28 years later and still waiting on justice. Someone ALWAYS knows ........
