"Viral cardiomyopathy is a disorder caused due to a viral attack on the cardiac muscles of the heart."

Don't know about the one he has, but rheumatic fever can develop from having strep throat. Guess the germs or viruses can travel around.

Also, people with periodontal disease in their mouth/gums, can actually get bacteria in their blood stream which can affect the heart as well.

Excessive use of alcohol over the years can be a contributing factor to developing viral cardiomyopathy.

Most of the time the cause of viral cardiomyopathy is unknown. It's used as a bit of a catch all, since there are so many viruses that can lead to the heart being weakened and attacked in that way. There are certain lifestyle factors that can leave you more susceptible to infection though. One of my friends had it after she caught influenza and then started going to the gym too soon afterwards. Inadequate recovery after illness along with complications from respiratory disease are two things which might lead to the infection.

I quickly googled Randy Travis (I've heard the name before, but didn't know anything except he was an American celebrity) and it does sound like he might have a few factors leading to this illness. My brother is a cardiac implant specialist so if we're talking anytime soon I can ask him for some more information.

    I found this quote:

Dr. Ramin Oskoui, a cardiologist and internal medicine specialist in Washington, told CNN.

Singer Randy Travis out of surgery, still critical

    CHRIS TALBOTT, AP

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Country music star Randy Travis is out of surgery but remains in critical condition after suffering a stroke while at a Texas hospital, the singer's publicist said late Wednesday.

Kirt Webster, the publicist, said the 54-year-old Travis suffered the stroke Wednesday night while he was being treated for congestive heart failure because of a viral illness. Travis underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. He remained in critical condition.

"His family and friends here with him at the hospital request your prayers and support," Webster said in a news release earlier in the evening.

It was not clear what kind of stroke Travis suffered. The most common type of stroke is caused by a blood clot that travels to the brain. The other kind happens when a blood vessel in the head bursts or leaks. Stroke patients who get treatment quickly are usually given a drug to dissolve the clot that caused the stroke...

Most likely he will have to go on the transplant list. I saw where he is on a left ventricular assist device and that is not good. (I am a cvicu nurse). Basically his left ventricle is being helped by a machine. This type of caRdiomyopathy is viral. Anyone can get it. Once I had a 23 year old marathon runner get it and have to go on the transplant list.

Randy Travis "Awake and Alert" After Brain Surgery, Doctor Says Heart Condition Wasn't Caused by Drugs or Alcohol
    Natalie Finn, eonline

Randy Travis has a long road ahead of him—but doctors are happy to report that at least the country singer is on that road.

The doctors heading up Travis' case announced Monday that the Storms of Life artist has woken up since undergoing surgery to relieve swelling on his brain following a stroke, but he remains on a ventilator and on intravenous medication for his heart.

However, other positive notes on his prognosis include that Travis' heart is pumping without the help of any machines and scans are showing decreased swelling in his brain...
