A Smithfield man, 67, who doesn’t speak and may have physical or mental health issues, is the subject of a Silver Alert issued Wednesday evening by the Rhode Island State Police.

The alert describes Howard McGhean as 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing a red parka, blue pants and a black baseball cap and was last seen walking along Harris Road, which parallels Route 295 between Routes 116 and 7. According to the alert, he has been missing since 9 a.m. Wednesday.

McGhean could be trying to get to Federal Hill in Providence.

Anyone who has seen him or has information about his whereabouts is asked to call the Smithfield Police Department at (401) 231-2500.

Smithfield man, 67, subject of Silver Alert, found at Fatima Hospital
A Smithfield man who was missing since 9 a.m. Wednesday and was the subject of a Silver Alert was found late Wednesday at Fatima Hospital.

Howard McGhean, 67, who doesn’t speak, “appears to be fine,” Smithfield police Sgt. Orlando Braxton said at about 11:30 p.m. How McGhean got to the hospital, Braxton didn’t know, but it was old-fashioned police work, not the statewide Silver Alert network that found him.

Braxton said that when a person is missing, officers call all the hospitals.

Fatima Hospital in North Providence answered that he was there.
