Not much on this yet but I got it on yahoo and foxcarolina.com. This mother and son were found near a dog kennel on their property in Colleton County SC. Their family has a long history of connections to the legal system in the Lowcountry and the son, who was murdered, was currently facing charges in a boating accident causing death.

I haven’t been able to go through the threads too deep, but I’m curious how others feel about this: from the very beginning, myself and others in the region assumed that AM hired one or more other people to kill his family, not that he did it himself.

Knowing his type, and later finding out more info about his involvement with drugs, only made this feeling stronger.

I theorized that it would be a while before this went to trial and that the investigation would be long and arduous trying to identify who he hired and finding the evidence to link him to them. So it’s been pretty surprising to find that this is not the state’s theory and frankly, I’m starting to get a little concerned that they jumped the gun in coming to trial.

Does anyone else feel the same or are most people absolutely convinced he did it and that he’s the trigger man?

At the time of the murders, Agent Cirencione was working for the crime unit but you'd never know this from defense attorney DH!

Please, I can't be the only one appalled by DH's condescending, minimalizing, tone with the witnesses-- especially when addressing women!

DH might as well have asked Agent Cirencione if she was responsible for taking lunch orders and picking up the dry cleaning. :rolleyes:

As for his "gotcha question" about whether or not she knew what a "Faraday" bag was, I think it's fair to say their use in the last decade was mostly by military or LE seizures with serious amounts of electronic evidence.

It's long been known that during questioning at a police station, LE will collect cellular phones and place them in airplane mode to disconnect your cellular voice and data connection.

To ask whether or not the agent used a Faraday bag to transport a modern, cellular phone to the evidence unit after he just finished bragging about how every Murdaugh family member voluntarily offered their phones to be searched was once again just another cheap tactic to direct the collection of evidence as compromised. IMO, all this did for me is show SC's prized defense attorney as an aged dude, well past his prime days. MOO

Alex says Maggie and Paul hadn't been arguing or upset with each other.
Alex says he and Maggie had a wonderful marriage, no issues.
Alex says he and Paul's relationship was as good as it could be.

Owen asks why Murdaugh came to kennel. Had left to go to Mom's house (late stage Alzheimer's) while Dad in the hospital. Maggie's a dog lover. Alex knew Maggie had gone to the kennels when he left. Tried to call and text her when he left, no response. Got back home, nobody at the house. Figured they were still at the kennel. Drove up and saw the bodies and called.

Alex says he didn't notice anything out of the ordinary around the bodies or the scene. Said the first thing he noticed by Paul was the blood.

Says he tried to carefully take pulses from both Maggie and Paul. Admits he touched them both. Then he called 911. Called his brother Randy. Called one of Paul's friends who lived nearby.

Then Murdaugh says he actually tried to turn Paul over and his cell phone popped out of his pocket. He picked up the phone to see if he could do something with it, but put it back down quickly.

INTERVIEW: Murdaugh says he pulled up and could immediately tell it was really bad. "My boy over there, I ran over, I could see ... (begins sobbing) ... I could see his brain on ... "I ran over to Maggie."

Rutland goes on to interview Murdaugh with Dave Owen from SLED present and Murdaugh's attorney Danny Henderson. Says Murdaugh was coherent, not appearing under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and had no trouble answering their questions.

Now that we've seen the photos released of MM's flip flops and the photo of the footprints that were referenced in yesterday's testimony by Cpt. Chapman and today's testimony by Det. Rutland, I must admit I am frustrated that no one took a photo of the footprints prior to LE walking in the area where the footprints were. I feel like this will really play into DH's argument that the crime scene was contaminated/the possibility that those footprints could have come from some unknown person (opening the door for the argument that someone other than AM was the perpetrator).
 
My husband is a LEO and works as a vehicular homicide investigator/accident reconstruction specialist and I know they will use the phones they are issued by the agency to take photos of evidence, etc. at times before CSU responds to the scene. (For example, to preserve evidence if it's raining, etc.) Just curious if that was something investigators could have done before SLED's CSU arrived.

ETA: Also curious to hear what data they pulled off of the black box they pulled from AM's Suburban (as mentioned in Det Rutland's testimony today) - I know from my husband's job I mentioned before there's tons of data on those boxes.

Yeah. I’m afraid the cross of this last witness will be ugly.
 
In my opinion it’s been pretty interesting to see Defense cross-examination over crime scene protocols and potential crime scene contamination. I don’t find that it was all that successful for the defense but I remind myself they just need to convince one juror. The first responders so far have handled it well; but the line of questions and answers of (this is paraphrasing not at all verbatim) “I was just a first responder” followed by “I don’t think the scene was contaminated” added with admission of them having just “basic” training for crime scene handling- the defense is certainly trying for their client.

I thought the answers about not wearing shoe covers was interesting; and they said they typically don’t war the booties aka shoe covers outside; it made me recall some photos taken of Moscow Idaho homicide crime scenes where the techs were wearing shoe covers on the outside. Things, like practices and protocols, can really vary place to place. I think the State is also doing an equally good job on redirect when DH had tried badgering some of the witnesses with such lines of questioning.

Defense lawyers have asked two Colleton County Sheriff’s Deputies, including Rutland, about a statement issued by law enforcement shortly after the slayings indicating there was no further danger to the public — perhaps indicating a suspect had been identified already. Both said they didn’t think the statement came out of their offices.

Griffin asked Rutland on Jan. 27 whether investigators considered Murdaugh a suspect when they first interviewed Murdaugh after midnight.

“That night,” Rutland said, “everybody was a suspect.”

“Including Alex?” Griffin asked.

“Including Alex,” Rutland said.

From some questioning of the agents today, it sounds like SLED was gathering all the shoeprint evidence from LE present at the scene for the purposes of eliminating those prints.
