From the Charley Project:

Details of Disappearance

Medlin was last seen at approximately 6:30 a.m. on May 2, 1998, by her husband. She was in bed at their residence in the vicinity of the 20 block of north Rutherford Road in Greer, South Carolina. Medlin's husband left their home at this time to get food for breakfast and when he returned, she was gone.

She was supposed to meet a friend in Atlanta, Georgia that day, but never arrived. Her vehicle and all of her other belongings, except her cellular phone, were left behind at the residence, and there has been no activity on her cellular phone since her disappearance. Her son reported her missing on May 6.

Medlin's financial accounts have been checked periodically since her disappearance; there has been no activity on them. At the time of her disappearance, she and her husband were having marital problems over credit card bills and a boyfriend Medlin may have had. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance, which remains unsolved.
This looks like it could've gone one of two ways:

It was the husband. We have only his word about when Sharon was last seen. He never reported her missing, nor does it appear he tried reaching out to friends and family to locate her, even though four days had passed and she left everything behind except her phone. Also, the two were having problems related to finances and a possible affair. Police can verify the financial problems (as they've monitored her account), but have they confirmed an affair? If not, then this story also comes from the husband and could simply be a cover.

It was the boyfriend. If he existed, maybe he was growing impatient that Sharon was still with her husband. Maybe she tried to break it off with him and he got angry. Knowing somehow that Sharon's husband would leave the house early that morning for breakfast, the boyfriend could've shown up at the house and convinced Sharon to go with him to talk things out, which would explain why she left everything behind except her phone. He could've forced her at gunpoint, which would explain no reported signs of a struggle, but I feel like in this emotional scenario Sharon wouldn't have remembered to take her phone unless she physically had it on her already.

With the evidence available to us, one of these stories is the simpler one, and maybe that's the direction we should be heading in.
