"South Korea despatched coastguard vessels and helicopters on Wednesday to rescue around 450 passengers – mostly high school students – on a ferry sinking off the southern coast, officials said.

"The ship is taking in water and sinking," a coastguard spokesman told AFP by phone.

"There are around 450 people on board and we have coastguard vessels, commercial ships in the area, as well as helicopters all engaged in the rescue operation," the spokesman said."

    Also:

"The Yonhap news agency cited rescue agency officials as saying 130 passengers had already been taken off the stricken ferry, which ran into trouble 20 kilometres (13 miles) off the southern coast."

Vice-Minister of Security and Public Administration Lee Gyeong-og said he could confirm that 110 passengers had been rescued so far.

Many passengers have already been lifted off and TV reports say remaining passengers have been told to jump into the sea to await rescue.

I've been looking for live coverage and not having much luck but in googling, is it just me or does there seem to be an awful lot of South Korean ship-sinking stories ... ?

Today marks the 102nd anniversary of the Titanic sinking. I sure hope everyone is rescued safely in this case.

    I just watched BBC News.

They are saying that hundreds are missing. The reports of all students have been resued are false. :please:

    161 people have been rescued.

    Parents are demanding answers.

OMG!! That is crazy. I heard them say the water temp was 10 degrees centigrade, and they could handle it for about 1 hour. Where were the life boats? Such a tragedy. jmo

Wonder how deep it is where this ship went under? Almost looks to me to be too shallow an area for this ship??

Now The Korea Herald is saying that the 386 rescued was a miscalculation, and that 280 are still missing. :(

A MULTI-story ferry carrying 459 people, mostly high school students on an overnight trip to a tourist island, sank off South Korea’s southern coast, leaving nearly 300 people missing despite a frantic, hours-long rescue by ships and helicopters.

At least four people were confirmed dead and 55 injured when the ferry bound for Jeju, the largest island in South Korea, sank off Byeongpung Island.

The high number of people unaccounted for — likely trapped in the ship or floating in the ocean — raised fears that the death toll could rise drastically, making it one of South Korea’s biggest ferry disasters since 1993 when 292 people died

Reports suggest some of those rescued were picked up by nearby commercial vessels. The US Navy was also reported to be sending a ship to assist.

Navy divers were now searching the scene for those unaccounted for, officials said, but the work was challenging.

Sad. I hope they got off. Would they have enough time to take action?

Rescuers search dark, cold sea for survivors of shipwreck off South Korea

"(CNN) -- Military dive teams and other rescuers worked the dark, cold waters of the Yellow Sea early Thursday in a desperate effort to find nearly 300 people who remained missing after the ferry they were taking to a South Korean island resort sank with breathtaking speed."

Theories on how a South Korean passenger ferry suddenly sank

"It most likely struck something in the water, said Peter Boynton, a retired U.S. Coast Guard captain.
"The speed with which this ferry began to list and then roll over on its side suggests significant damage, most likely causing major flooding that would cause a vessel of this size -- almost 500 feet long -- to quickly roll onto its side. That's very likely the result of significant damage," he said.
Some passengers reported hearing a loud bang before the ship began sinking. That could be from cargo shifting or "some other internal damage," Boynton told CNN's "New Day." "But it does sound, from initial reports, it was more likely that something was struck."

    Approximate location
When the ship left Seoul, it traveled through fog, which may have put it off course, said Mary Schiavo, former inspector general for the Department of Transportation.
"So if they hit something, that would have meant they were out of the channel, which is quite easy to do. ... What people don't see when they look at the glassy expanse is underneath, there are intricate and detailed channels maintained. If it got out of the channel, it could have hit something."
