Damn. A man who achieved so much against such bloody awful odds.

Because his artificial voice box gave him an American accent, many people apparently assumed he was American. I once read that while the furious arguments were going on about the introduction of Obama's healthcare reforms, one opponent claimed that socialised medicine would never have been able to keep Stephen Hawking alive for so long.

You know, for a man with such a debilitating disease, he lived to a good age. And he used every moment of that age with his huge brain, which never let him down, like his physical body did. Vale to a true hero.

Yes, like insurance companies would have? And it wasn't just the medical treatment, it was the aids to living his life which made his life livable. I am not sure that you would get those aids out of an insurance company.

British physicist Stephen Hawking, among world’s greatest minds of science, dies at 76
    by Elizabeth Chuck

Stephen Hawking, the British theoretical physicist who beat the odds his entire life, has died. He was 76.

The University of Cambridge, where Hawking was director of research in applied mathematics and theoretical physics and founder of the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology, confirmed his death early Wednesday to NBC News.

Hawking was as famous for his insights on black holes, the existence of God and quantum gravity as he was for his unique way of speaking while living his life in a wheelchair. Operating his trademark computer system with his cheek, Hawking gave the world insights into the unknown and gems of quotations, including, "Life would be tragic if it weren't funny." ...

(CNN) - Figures from the scientific community and beyond came together to mark the passing of famed physicist Stephen Hawking, who died at age 76 on Wednesday, the same day as Albert Einstein's birthday, also known as "Pi day."

The academic, author and noted scientist brought his complex theories to a wide audience through his bestselling book, "A Brief History of Time."

"He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years," his three children, Lucy, Robert and Tim, said in a joint statement...
