    Target: 40 million credit, debit cards compromised

    Target Corp said data from about 40 million credit and debit card accounts might have been stolen from customers who shopped in its stores over a 19-day period ending Sunday, in one of the largest card breaches at a U.S. retailer.

    The company today reported it had identified and resolved the issue, which started on the day before Thanksgiving.

    Target did not say how the breach, which might have compromised accounts between November 27 and December 15, had occurred or what percentage of its customers had been affected.

    "On December 15, we were able to identify an unauthorized access and we were able at that time to resolve the issue," Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder told Reuters.

    Wonder if this is an internal job, or if it is hacking related to the machines and servers for them.

    I am so afraid to use my cc, debit, or even checks now. But I can't carry around cash for groceries and such either. My cc has been stolen 3 times in the last 6 months on the internet, and each time I had to get a new card. Just so you know, if a site isn't using paypal, don't order from them.

    What will happen now to how we shop? We were forced into debit cards, like it or not, with the paranoid (meaning me) knowing this would happen. Anything computer based is hackable. Sigh.

    One more thing.

    Set your credit card accounts to alert you to the lowest amount your company allows per each charge. I have mine set to $1.

    Check your banking statements frequently and carefully. I would say set that for alerts too, but most banks charge for alerts, so just do it manually.

    If you used your card at Target during this time, you are entitled to a free credit report. I would tag it for fraud alert. Also, if you used a debit card, change your pin asap!

    These kinds of situations have caused my family and me to switch to cash as often as possible.

    My parents have had their identities stolen (over 800 credit rating!) and new cards sent to addresses in Detroit and Melvindale, MI while my parents were wintering in FL. Thousands in cash advances spent at the casinos in Detroit. Very large purchases, etc. They've been working with a detective for over a year. It's a mess for elderly folks.

    Hubby and I have had our cards swiped multiple times for one purchase, and the clerk pockets the difference. Gas stations where the card swiper at the pump is always "broken" so you have to go inside to swipe. 7/11, etc.

    Walmart has screwed me over more than once. I got cash back after a purchase and the clerk got herself some cash back in the same amount. By the time I got my bank statement and realized the clerk took an extra $60, my Walmart receipt was gone and I couldn't prove it wasn't me getting the cash. The most recent was WM clerk charging me for 11 green peppers when I bought 1 AND ringing up my bottle return as a purchase! It was about $15 total that would have went into her pocket. I had to go stand in line forever at customer service to get it all fixed.

    My son had his identity stolen as a teen. Thankfully it wasn't too much trouble to get that one fixed, tho.

    For us, it's just too much hassle to risk swiping our cards anymore.

    Rogue software installed on Target card readers believed used to steal data

    "On December 15, we were able to identify an unauthorized access and we were able at that time to resolve the issue," Target spokeswoman Molly Snyder said by telephone.

    Krebs on Security, a closely watched security industry blog that broke the news on Wednesday, said the breach involved nearly all of Target's 1,797 stores in the United States and investigators believed the data was obtained via software installed on point-of-sales terminals used to swipe magnetic strips on payment cards. The status of the 124 Canadian stores is not known.

    It is not yet clear how the attackers were able to compromise point-of-sales terminals at so many Target stores. "It is very clear it is a sophisticated crime," Snyder said.

    Target urged any customers who suspect they are affected by the data breach to call 866-852-8680.

    I've used both my credit card and debit recently at target. I called my credit card today and spoke with customer service. They are aware and watching accounts. They offered me a new card and number but I declined a new card number, keep the one I have but did activate the new that come in with same number. That would be a new strip a cv number but account number stayed the same. She told me they would put an alert on purchases outside my norm.

    I have go to my bank and change my debit card. Doing that tomorrow.

    I just have an issue with shopping with cash. Afraid of being robbed. I have direct deposit and just don't carry cash. It's almost dang if you do and dang if you don't.

    Target offering weekend discounts, free credit monitoring after data breach

    Target sought to reassure customers that it was safe to shop at its stores and encouraged them to do so by offering 10 percent discounts off most merchandise on Saturday and Sunday, the last weekend before Christmas.

    "We're in this together, and in that spirit, we are extending a 10 percent discount - the same amount our team members receive," Chief Executive Gregg Steinhafel in a statement on Target's website.

    Went to bank today to change PIN number. Bank said visa hasn't informed them that any of their cards had been compromised. I ask lady what should I do, she said all employees that she knows of that shopped during that time has canceled their debit cards and got new ones. So that is what I did today.

    I'll just use credit card and transfer my spending to my card from my checking till new card comes in. What a hassle! Thanks hackers!

    It's a hassle, but better safe than sorry! You'd be in a bigger mess if your card was compromised! :)

    This is SO frustrating. I use Chase and of course it's the last weekend before Christmas and am just now leaving to pick up my daughters "big" gift and finish up the last of our shopping. I haven't gotten a notice from the bank but know for a fact I shopped at target (and used both my chase debit card and my target RedCard.) wonder if I'm affected. What a pain.

    I know the feeling-I have a Target Credit card that I used at least once in the time frame, and I'm also thinking I used my regular debit card at one point, too. I'm not sure my bank would notify me--they've done some stuff this past year that made me start looking to open a bank account somewhere else, but so far, the other options haven't been any better (ridiculous fees, lists of things to do to avoid a monthly charge just to have an account there, etc)...so I'm still at a bank I don't like and I'm just hoping no one got my info

    I think Target is going to have to do better to make me trust shopping there again--There's no way I would consider shopping there this weekend, even for a 10% discount. (And I'm not judging anyone who does--This is just my own opinion).

    I made a purchase at Target during the affected time. Lucky for me I still keep a check register in a notebook and I record everything whether it is a check, auto payment or debit purchase. I reconcile with the bank several times a week. So I was able to look and see easily that I made a purchase. Luckily , no one had tried to use my card info. I did call my bank's main office yesterday morning. They told me they were canceling all debit cards used during that time frame and re issuing new ones, we should get one next week. Got a call from our local branch yesterday afternoon letting us know that the old card was cancelled and a new on its way.

    For me, its just a matter of transferring money from that account to a different one till we get our new card. Hopefully we won't have to worry now since that card has been cancelled.

    Target meets with state attorneys as lawsuits pile up

    BOSTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Target Corp's general counsel, Timothy Baer, spoke with top state prosecutors on Monday to address their concerns about a massive data breach, as consumer lawsuits piled up against the retailer and two U.S. senators called for a federal probe.

    Attorneys general from several states including Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York have asked the company to provide more information about the cyber attack, in which hackers stole data from as many as 40 million credit and debit cards of shoppers who visited Target stores during the first three weeks of the holiday shopping season.
